The Disappearance of the Universe: Straight Talk about Illusions, Past Lives, Religion, Sex, Politics, and the Miracles of ForgivenessBy

What would you do if you were sitting quietly in your living room when two mysterious strangers appeared from out of nowhere-and then told you they were 'ascended masters' who had come to reveal some shocking secrets of existence and teach you the miraculous powers of advanced forgiveness? Would you call the cops? Call a psychiatrist? Call out for pizza? When two such teachers appeared before Gary Renard in 1992, he chose to listen to them (and ask a lot of questions). The result is this startling book: an extraordinary record of 17 mind bending conversations that took place over nearly a decade, reorienting the author's life and giving the world an uncompromising introduction to a spiritual teaching destined to change human history.

Review
"An impressively detailed examination of the essence of life and what it means to live fully ... a welcome and recommended addition to Metaphysical Studies reading lists."

From the Publisher
Read by Gary Renard & Doreen Virtue, Phd!

From the Author
While living in a rural area of Maine I was witness to a series of in-the-flesh appearances by two ascended masters named Pursah and Arten, who eventually identified their previous incarnations as including those of Saint Thomas and Saint Thaddaeus. (Despite popular myth, those lifetimes as two of the original disciples were not their final ones.) My visitors did not come forth in order to repeat some of the spiritual platitudes that many people already believe. Rather, they revealed no less than the secrets of the universe, discussed the true purpose of life, and spoke in detail about The Gospel of Thomas. They also clarified the principles of an astounding spiritual document that will usher in a new way of thinking that will become more prevalent in the new millennium.

You don’t have to believe these appearances took place in order to derive benefits from the information in this book. However, I can vouch for the extreme unlikeliness of this book being written by an uneducated layman such as myself without inspiration by these masters. At any rate, I leave it up to readers to think whatever they choose about the book’s origins.

I personally believe that The Disappearance of the Universe can be helpful, time-saving reading for any open-minded person who is on a spiritual path. After you experience this message, it may be impossible for you — as it was for me — ever to look at your life or think of the universe the same way again.

Forgiveness Explained
By Malgozata
This will be different for each person, but I am sharing here what the book has done for me. I have been a diligent course (A Course in Miracles) student for over 2 years now. I have been studying both the text and the workbook and have read the Manual for Teachers and Glossary of Terms. Having completed both once already, I am studying these course books again, under the careful and helpful guidance of the Holy Spirit. I have gained many insights and my life has changed immensely… but I needed help. So following this saying, “when a student is ready, a teacher will appear,” along came The Disappearance of the Universe book.

For me, this book is Holy Spirit’s help to take me to the next level. This book has served the ONE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT PURPOSE. I am speaking of FORGIVENESS. Through the course, I gained the knowledge and understanding of the components of forgiveness, but somehow wasn’t able to put them all together. Then, along came this book and now I get it.

Forgiveness process is: learning to believe and see that this world is just a dream, that I am not this body, that what this body sees and feels and experiences is not happening. That no one is doing anything to me, because what I see and experience out in the world is really my own projected hatred and guilt which are inside me. But this is not real either, because I never sinned against God. I never separated from God. The real me is and has always been one with God all along. So, I do not have to run and hide from God and I have nothing to feel guilty about. I did not do anything wrong.

Forgiveness is being aware of all of this and then letting go of what this body sees and experiences and feels. It is learning to detach and separate myself from this world, by not getting emotionally involved in its activities, by remembering that this is just a dream, that it is not real and it is not happening.

Finally, since this body is not me, then, it does not matter what happens to this body. I can completely detach and separate from this body and have no personal investment nor attachment to this body. But since this body is here in this illusory world at the moment, then, by all means, Holy Spirit please utilize it for the good of all oneness.

The above is my personal paraphrase, elaboration and extension of the process of forgiveness as described in the book. As it is said in Gary’s book, the words do not matter, it is the attitude that is important.

So, the truth is here. Now, comes the diligent part of applying it which is the next phase of my life.

By the way, it really doesn’t matter to me where or from whom Gary received these insights, whether they came from ascended masters, Pursah and Arten, or from other sources. All this truth comes down from Holy Spirit anyway, regardless of the mouth through which it is spoken.

There are many other spiritual gold nuggets that I have gleaned from the reading of this book. And, I was also able to fill in some spiritual gaps, things I was curious about, with the information from this book as well. But, there are also some pages and chapters, especially towards the end, that just do not add up for me. Throughout, I heavily relied on Holy Spirit’s guidance and discernment to sort through everything to determine what to keep and use and what to discard.

Lastly, I was able to understand this book precisely because I have spent considerable amount of time studying the course first. The course was also the place where I learned to discern Holy Spirit’s thoughts and messages.

But, then, your path may be different. So, may the Holy Spirit guide you.

Thank you, Holy Spirit. Thank you, Pursah and Arten. Thank you, Gary. Thank you, Patrick Miller. Thank you, Hay House Publishers. Thank you, Amazon. And thank you Pip, my beloved spiritual co-traveler, who told me about this book to begin with.

PS. Since finishing this book, I have returned back to my studies in the course... And, after having read Gary's book, I am noticing a huge difference. The truths in the course touch me on a much deeper level. There is great clarity. This book has and is helping me tremendously in my spiritual path... the goal of which is full awakening. So, again, thank you everyone.

Sincerely, Malgozata

Talk about an powerful book! Wow!
By Sandra Champlain
Geez, this was actually not what I was expecting and totally delighted that I received it! Ever hear the saying "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear?" Well, I must be ready. I listened to the audiobook of The Disappearance of the Universe which made it more personal to me. I loved hearing Gary's voice and Doreen Virtue, as I know them both to be kind-hearted, generous and very inspirational souls. I felt like I was a bit on a roller-coaster with this, as some of things Gary spoke of seemed to be hard to believe. However, I myself have witnessed miracles so I did my best to put aside any judgements or preconceived notions and decided to be present to Gary's words and stay buckled on the ride to the end!

In Disappearance of the Universe, Gary shares his personal journey of being "just a guy" to meeting with two beings who teach some profound words of wisdom for living life on earth. Concepts like "everything is an illusion" and "every person and event we have in our lives is because we put them there" took me out of being a victim in my life and turned me into being responsible for it all!!! What a cool way to live life! Hard to remember most of the times, but Gary mentions A Course in Miracles, Combined Volume: Text, Workbook for Students, Manual for Teachers, 2nd Edition as a way to make this into a daily practice. Most appealing to me is that he says it is possible to quiet the mighty ego - the one that I have in my mind that is always telling me I am not good enough, a failure and unlovable. I so want to be living life free from that voice in my head. Think of how much peaceful life could be without a constant nag in your head AND living life as YOU are the creator of it all. For some, that will occur as both good and bad news, but ultimately it is good news. I am left happy, empowered and certainly responsible with a TON of forgiveness and gratitude after listening to The Disappearance of the Universe. And...I did just order A Course in Miracles too. Thank you Gary Renard for another great listen. PS I have already listened to Secrets of the Immortal: Advanced Teachings from A Course in Miracles which was phenomenal. -Sandra Champlain, author of We Don't Die: A Skeptic's Discovery of Life After Death

Thought provoking, insightful, and helpful!
By Lynette M. Smith
I just read "The Disappearance of the Universe: Straight Talk about Illusions, Past Lives, Religion, Sex, Politics, and the Miracles of Forgiveness," by Gary R. Renard (Copyright 2004, 448 pages). The book had been highly recommended to me by a friend who is a decades-long student and past teacher of A Course in Miracles (ACIM, sometimes called "the Course").

Renard's book is a true account of 17 tape-recorded visits to the author by two ascended masters, Arten and Pursah. During their visits, they answer Gary's questions about God, Jesus, and the dream we call life, which we only think is our reality. (Spoiler alert: Our true reality is Heaven, the Oneness of God.)

In their transcribed conversations, the two masters share inspiring ideas and insights to help Gary and his future readers (because they know he'll write a book) better understand the dream we believe we're living, and how to forgive everyone, in order to eventually awaken from the dream and become aware of our Oneness. In the book, Arten and Pursah cite and explain relevant sections from the Course (ACIM) text and workbook.

Note that I've never personally read the Course, although I have subscribed for decades to "The Holy Encounter" newsletter produced by its world headquarters because I appreciate the contents. That being said, I did find great value and food for thought (and improvement) in "The Disappearance of the Universe."

The Gentrification of the Mind: Witness to a Lost Imagination, by Sarah Schulman

In this gripping memoir of the AIDS years (1981–1996), Sarah Schulman recalls how much of the rebellious queer culture, cheap rents, and a vibrant downtown arts movement vanished almost overnight to be replaced by gay conservative spokespeople and mainstream consumerism. Schulman takes us back to her Lower East Side and brings it to life, filling these pages with vivid memories of her avant-garde queer friends and dramatically recreating the early years of the AIDS crisis as experienced by a political insider. Interweaving personal reminiscence with cogent analysis, Schulman details her experience as a witness to the loss of a generation’s imagination and the consequences of that loss.

Review
“This bracing, powerful, and well-reasoned work reaffirms the author’s stature as a distinctive American woman of letters. . . . Highly recommended.” (Richard Drezen Library Journal 2012-03-02)

“The book that’s inspired me more than any other this year is Sarah Schulman’s Gentrification of the Mind: Witness to a Lost Imagination, a razor-sharp memoir of New York in the heyday of the AIDS crisis.” (Jason King Slate 2012-12-26)

“Teeming with ideas, necessary commentary, refreshing connections and examination of the status quo.” (Lambda Literary 2012-03-13)

“A brilliant critique of contemporary culture. . . . This is the most important book of the year.” (Jeff Miller Cult MTL 2012-12-27)

“Schulman’s personal recollections... are sharp and vivid.” (Gay & Lesbian Review/Worldwide 2012-08-01)

“This is a very good, very sad book about the aftershock of the AIDS crisis in New York. Schulman is a truly gifted thinker.” (Alex Frank Fader Magazine 2012-05-18)

“The author, a true woman of letters, makes a persuasive case.” (Roberto Friedman Bay Area Reporter 2012-03-15)

“This is why the book is so successful and demands our attention: through a focus on the pulse of the queer community (of the 80s), it touches upon the individual condition (of today).” (Marcie Bianco Velvetpark 2012-03-20)

“A polemic, a passionate, provocative . . . account of disappearance, forgetfulness and untimely death.” (Olivia Laing New Statesman 2013-03-07)

“No book has rocked my world in recent times more than Sarah Schulman’s ‘The Gentrification of the Mind: Witness to a Lost Imagination’ . . . [it ranks] among the best alternative histories published in the last 50 years.” (Don Shewey Culturevulture.net 2012-05-21)

“A galvanizing account of the transformation, both external and mental, in New York City life.” (Emily Douglas Los Angeles Review Of Books 2012-06-08)

“The essence of what Schulman calls gentrification is to pretend that privilege and difference do not exist and that any attempt to remember that they do is mere ‘political correctness’ rather than facing up to the reality to who does what to whom. To forget these things, is to deceive ourselves—and Schulman’s harsh, bitter prose is a useful way of waking ourselves up.” (Roz Kaveney Times Literary Supplement (TLS) 2012-04-13)

“It’s a beautifully written screed (not a bad word in my books). . . . Schulman shines when she taps her deep knowledge of the AIDS movement. . . . She can be brilliant.” (Susan G. Cole Now 2012-03-08)

From the Inside Flap
"Sarah Schulman, as always, hits the nail on the head. I can't imagine a more insightful probe into gentrification and its inhumane consequences. Everyone needs to read this book."—Martin Duberman, author of Stonewall

“Sarah Schulman's The Gentrification of the Mind is a bulwark against the collective loss of memory. AIDS, gentrification, the struggle for gay rights, the class war that has driven entire communities of artists, immigrants, and outsiders from the neighborhoods they created—all these things have been erased by the official culture. Schulman's book will make you rage and weep, and then—just maybe—organize.”—Luc Sante, author of Low Life: Lures and Snares of Old New York

"Hard-headed, sensitive, and informed, this book will make the confused world of urban redevelopment and gentrification make notably more sense. Schulman has a mind as clear as a bell in evening. You'll be glad you read it. I was."—Samuel R. Delany, author of Through the Valley of the Nest of Spiders

No Bones About It -- An Important Book
By James Lough
Sarah Schulman's recent book, "The Gentrification of the Mind: Witness to a Lost Imagination" is one of the most important books of the year. In it, she confronts the problem of gentrification that is endemic to urban neighborhoods in our liveliest cities. Gentrification effectively turns our creative hubs, teeming with diversity, into bland "suburbs in the cities," homogenizing people, tastes, and how we interpret our lives.

My new book, "This Ain't No Holiday Inn: Down and Out at the Chelsea Hotel 1980-1995″ addresses gentrification in its final chapters. But Schulman's book explores gentrification in detail, using the AIDS plague as its central example. The common attitude today is that, "Oh, we took care of AIDS; it's no longer a problem," is a perfect example of how not only our neighborhoods become gentrified, but our very minds become colonized by ignorant attitudes largely propagated by members of the white elite class. Even some gays, more concerned with fitting in than with fighting for their rights, share the attitude.

Here's how Schulman defines gentrification: "Physically it is an urban phenomena: the removal of communities of diverse classes, ethnicities, races, sexualities, languages, and points of view from the central neighborhoods of cities, and their replacement by more homogenized groups. With this comes the destruction of culture and relationship, and this destruction has profound consequences for the future lives of cities."

Did you know that Manhattan and San Francisco used to be affordable for young artists, rebels, bohemians, and freaks to move to and find a home with people like themselves? Now only the rich can afford to move there, so they can be with other rich folk like themselves. Tell me with a straight face that this does not dumb down our culture, our arts, and create a bland, conformist complacency that keeps the rich in power and the poor in poverty.

Superb Book
By Bert Ouellette
This is one of the best books I've ever read about the death of entire areas of big cities and the death of beautiful cultures. I was recently in New York City and I didn't even recognize the street where I used to live. Saint Vincent's Hospital will now be condos for gentrified folks who only drink lattes at $5.00 a cup. What happened to Christopher Street? Where are all the beautiful card shops and coffee houses? All I saw were boutiques and Starbucks! Even Times Square is now Disneyland with people dressed up like Hello Kitty and Minnie Mouse and demanding money from gullible tourists for having their picture taken. Is the East Village still alive? I remember this area when it was thriving.
I now live in Boston and sadly, the same is happening here. New two bedroom condos now go for a million!
Kudos to Sarah Schulman. I am seriously thinking of using this book in one of the classes I teach. Excellent read.

Transformative
By Avery Cassell
I am not an academic, but am a queer writer and an artist. I loved this book and am so glad I bought a hard copy, because I'll be rereading it.

I have not read such a transformative nonfiction book since reading Pat Califia's "Public Sex" in 1994. This book is invigorating. There are so many sections that I loved; when she wrote about the dearth of lesbians in literature in chapter six, it was both a knife to the heart and a cry to battle.

This book was short enough not to intimidate me with academia, yet just the right length to compel me to buy Schulman's new book, "Conflict is not Abuse: Overstating Harm, Community Responsibility and the Duty of Repair."

Finalist for the 2015 PEN/Jacqueline Bograd Weld Award for Biography

Named one of the 10 best biographies of 2014-15 by Booklist

"Journalist Slevin explores Michelle Obama’s family history, struggle to rise above racial limitations, marriage, and close friendships as he traces her path to the White House to become an accomplished First Lady who has changed the trajectory of American history."
—booklistonline.com

“No first lady in American history has been at once so popular, pervasive, and yet so hard to know as Michelle Obama. Now Peter Slevin has gone deep and wide to render the most ambitious and authoritative book about her yet. Richly reported, beautifully written, thoughtful in its judgments and revelatory in its details, Michelle Obama is a work that does justice to Michelle Obama in a fresh way.”
—John Heilemann, co-author of Game Change and Double Down

“It's a challenge to tell the life story of a public figure, particularly a transformative one. But in Michelle Obama: A Life Peter Slevin is dogged in his reporting, nuanced in his storytelling and thoughtful in his analysis. He not only shows us who this historical first lady is, but how she came to be. In the process, he reveals much about our times and our culture.”
—Robin Givhan, Pulitzer Prize-winning critic for the Washington Post

“Michelle Obama is one of the most famous women in the world and one of the least understood. Peter Slevin brings us an amazing, eye-opening biography that begins on Chicago's South Side and ends in the White House. Here, Michelle Obama comes alive, as a complex and inspiring woman whose dilemmas mirror America's own continuing struggle for racial equality. Completely convincing and gripping, Michelle Obama:  A Life is a rich, powerful portrait at once revealing of Mrs. Obama and of ourselves as Americans.”
—Dexter Filkins, author of The Forever War

“The life of Michelle Obama is a uniquely American story, and Peter Slevin tells it beautifully in this deft, revealing work. In sharing Michelle's extraordinary journey, Slevin also paints a rich picture of Chicago's  South Side during the past century and the family and forces that helped shape this exceptional woman.”
—David Axelrod, former Senior Advisor to the President, director of the Institute of Politics at the University of Chicago

"Thoughtful… Ripe with revelations about her deeply complicated relationship with her own position as an Ivy League-educated black woman… Richly rendered context for Mr. Obama’s 2008 campaign, when Mrs. Obama suddenly became a litmus test."
—Amy Chozick, New York Times Book Review

"The Michelle who emerges fully understands the transformative value of being an African-American First Lady."
—The New Yorker

“Must-read...An important new biography…Political journalist Peter Slevin, who covered the Obamas for a decade, has written a literate, deeply reported portrait of the First Lady… Slevin treats her and her accomplishments with the detail and nuance they deserve.”
—Elle Magazine

“Slevin, a former reporter for The Washington Post, goes to great lengths to depict the first lady's 1960s and 1970s upbringing in a racially divided Chicago, often hostile to African-Americans. He also presents the humble — and driven, artistic and outspoken — relatives who shaped her… Such glimpses into the first lady's early life are found throughout this meticulously researched biography…Slevin pulls back the curtain of her White House life.”
—Katherine Skiba, Chicago Tribune

"Slevin’s work is detailed and absorbing; his careful research presents the most comprehensive portrait of Obama to date. Though analytical, the work is never dry and includes many anecdotes that bring a storied public figure to life....While other books have probed race issues, Slevin’s work enables the reader to appreciate the sweep of the pre- and post-civil rights movement as it played out in Chicago and was experienced by the young Michelle, her family and friends...A major and welcome addition to the bookshelf of first lady biographies."
—Myra G. Gutin, The Washington Post

"Makes a convincing case that Mrs. Obama’s popularity today has more to do with events that took place on the south side of Chicago decades ago than with the work of an image maker in the East Wing of the White House."
—The Wall Street Journal

"Impressively reported and researched... fast-paced."
—Chicago magazine

"Richly detailed prose...Tons of little-known nuggets revealed in the book, offering readers a closer look at the Mrs. Obama they never knew."
— NBC News

"Her life story charts the progress of the civil rights movement...Michelle Obama’s success is a direct result of those societal advancements, but she has also made the case for her childhood, and adults who instilled in her and her brother “a larger message fundamental to their upbringing,” Slevin writes. It's a venerable African-American ideology, a necessary survival strategy, but also a kind of a moral argument about human possibility."
—Bloomberg Politics

"Intimate view of her life...[Slevin] interviewed a vast collection of Michelle Obama’s friends, family members and acquaintances...to craft the most comprehensive portrait to date of the nation’s first African-American first lady.
— Atlanta BlackStar"

“The incredible journey: A new biography brings First Lady Michelle Obama's inspiring story to life… A drive to give back is the through line in Slevin’s thoughtful account.”
—Vogue

"An in-depth look at America’s FLOTUS—starting at the Great Migration, and leaving no stone unturned."
—Jezebel

"[T]he future First Lady was a girl from the South Side of Chicago, navigating the Ivy League world and its social intricacies while questioning the impact black Princeton graduates had on the community at large. She didn’t want to forget her roots and the importance of reaching back — a value instilled in her by her parents back home...Slevin is able to connect the dots of Mrs. Obama’s life and assess the impact her upbringing, deeply rooted in the black experience, has had on not only her impressive career trajectory, but also the legacy she’ll leave behind as First Lady."
—Time

“Rich in familial details....Recounts Obama's working-class childhood, her struggle to fit in at Princeton, her social activism at Harvard Law, and her success in community affairs...Those nostalgic for the 'Yes We Can' era will delight in reliving the ups and downs of the 2008 election.”
—Bust

“We might daydream about being BFFs with Michelle Obama, but Peter Slevin’s new biography of the First Lady is probably as close as we’ll get. Reading it...is a weekend well spent."
—Dame

"Michelle Obama: A Life is a refreshing reminder that a serious journalist taking an interesting first lady seriously can produce compelling results...Exhaustive and thoughtful portrait that produces many insights and surprises...We get a seldom-explored view of a tight-knit, closely guarded South Side Chicago neighborhood that produced a number of success stories including the first African-American first lady...a number of “I didn’t know that" moments that will delight the most ardent Michelle Watchers."
—Patrik Henry Bass, Essence Magazine

"It took Peter Slevin to tell the inspiring story of Michelle Obama. Thrilled to recommend this book....I know this author, and he has used his vast skills and sensitivity to paint a fair and inspiring portrait of America's first black First Lady....Peter's book is the story of her life, but in his capable hands it's also the story about race in America."
—Connie Schultz, winner, Pulitzer Prize for commentary

"The first African-American first lady is not only a historic figure, she’s someone we don’t know very well beyond the idealized or demonized figure portrayed in partisan media....Slevin makes this mostly happy life interesting by putting it in the context in which Michelle came of age...we see her shed her discomfort with being a black woman in a historically white job, playing out the story she hopes to make possible for other people."
—Maclean's

"Michelle Obama's story is an American classic....Slevin combines access to her and her family and friends with a keen understanding of American politics and history... ...[T]he many new details, combined with a keen sense of the political and social dynamics at work during Michelle Obama's formative years, make this book a standout."
—USA Today

"Meticulously reported, close-up look…A detailed portrait of an ambitious, civic-minded woman with a track record for getting things done."
—The Florida Times-Union

"If anyone is qualified to tell the first lady's story, it is Slevin....Meticulously researched...Michelle Obama fans should be pleased...A woman presented here as a full partner in her husband's political career."
—The Houston Chronicle

"It's a great read!"
—Rev. Al Sharpton, MSNBC

"Slevin relied on dozens of conversations with friends, family and others to trace her historic orbit. He draws a hyper intelligent, charismatic and complex woman molded by working-class parents in segregated Chicago."
—Chicago Sun Times

"Great book!....I am having just a great time reading Michelle Obama: A Life.
—Joe Madison, SiriusXM Urban View

"A deeply informed portrait of the first lady and her native Chicago, particularly this city's often shameful treatment of African Americans...Exhaustively reported, painstakingly footnoted...Her larger story, told so powerfully in Slevin's biography, suggests she will forever be a force with which to be reckoned."
—Heidi Stevens, Chicago Tribune

"Slevin depicts Obama as human—with foibles and flaws—as well as courageous—sacrificing personally...His thorough research, openness and compassion combine to create a stunning profile of an inspirational role model for the twenty-first century."
—Jen Forbus, Shelf Awareness for Readers

"Meticulously detailed and engrossing...engaging and insightful."
—Deesha Philyaw, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

"Inspiring read for women in search of (authentic) positivity...We see her passion for equality and her commitment to ending childhood obesity, but above all the takeaway is this: Never give anyone else the power to decide what is possible for you."
—Dawn Raffel, Oprah.com

Introduction

In June 2010, when Michelle Obama cast her eyes across the class of graduating high school seniors from one of Washington’s most troubled black neighborhoods, she saw not only their lives, but her own. The setting was Constitution Hall, where the Daughters of the American Revolution had prevented opera singer Marian Anderson from performing in 1939 because she was black. So much had changed in seven decades, and yet much had not. Michelle spoke to the graduates about the troubles facing African American children in Anacostia, and she spoke about racism. She pointed out that the neighborhood within sight of the U.S. Capitol once was segregated and that black people had been prohibited from owning property in parts of the community. “And even after those barriers were torn down,” she said, “others emerged. Poverty. Violence. Inequality.”

Michelle drew a straight line from her struggles with hardship and self-doubt in working-class Chicago to the fractured world the Anacostia students inhabited thirty years later. She told them about being written off, about feeling rejected, about the resilience it takes for a black kid in a public school to become one of the first in her family to go to college. “Kids teasing me when I studied hard. Teachers telling me not to reach too high because my test scores weren’t good enough. Folks making it clear with what they said or didn’t say that success wasn’t meant for a little girl like me from the South Side of Chicago.” As she spoke of her parents—their sacrifices and the way they pushed her “to reach for a life they never knew”—her voice broke and tears came to her eyes. As the students applauded in support, Michelle went on, “And if Barack were here, he’d say the same thing was true for him. He’d tell you it was hard at times growing up without a father. He’d tell you that his family didn’t have a lot of money. He’d tell you he made plenty of mistakes and wasn’t always the best student.”

She knew that many of the Anacostia students faced disruptions and distractions that sometimes made it hard to show up, much less succeed. It might be family turmoil or money troubles or needy relatives or children of their own. Or maybe the lack of a mentor, a quiet place to study, a lucky break. “Maybe you feel like no one has your back, like you’ve been let down by people so many times that you’ve stopped believing in yourself. Maybe you feel like your destiny was written the day you were born and you ought to just rein in your hopes and scale back your dreams. But if any of you are thinking that way, I’m here to tell you: Stop it.”

There were no cheap lines in Michelle’s speech that day, seventeen months after she arrived in the White House as the unlikeliest first lady in modern history. In a voice entirely her own, she reached deep into a lifetime of thinking about race, politics, and power to deliver a message about inequity and perseverance, challenge and uplift. These were the themes and experiences that animated her and set her apart. No one who looked like Michelle Obama had ever occupied the White House. No one who acted quite like her, either. She ran obstacle courses, she danced the Dougie, she hula-hooped on the White House lawn. She opened the executive mansion to fresh faces and voices and took her show on the road. She did sitcoms and talk shows and participated in cyber showcases and social media almost as soon as they were invented. Cameras and microphones tracked her every move. Maddening though the attention could be, she tried to make it useful. Amid a characteristic media fuss about a new hairstyle, she said of first ladies, “We take our bangs and we stand in front of important things that the world needs to see. And eventually, people stop looking at the bangs and they start looking at what we’re standing in front of.”

Michelle’s projects and messages reflected a hard-won determination to help the working class and the disadvantaged, to unstack the deck. She was more urban and more mindful of inequality than any first lady since Eleanor Roosevelt. She was also more steadily, if subtly, political. Not political in ways measured by elections or ephemeral Beltway chatter, although she made clear her convictions from many a campaign stage. Rather, political as defined by spoken beliefs about how the world should work and purposeful projects calculated to bend the curve. Her efforts unfolded in realms that had barely existed for African Americans a generation earlier, a fact that informed and complicated her work. “We live in a nation where I am not supposed to be here,” she once said.

Michelle’s prospects as first lady delighted her supporters and helped get Barack elected, but her story and its underpinnings remained unfamiliar to many white Americans in a country where black Americans often felt relegated to a parallel universe. “As we’ve all said in the black community, we don’t see all of who we are in the media. We see snip- pets of our community and distortions of our community,” Michelle said. “So the world has this perspective that somehow Barack and Michelle Obama are different, that we’re unique. And we’re not. You just haven’t seen us before.” She belonged to a generation that came of age after the civil rights movement. It was fashionable in some circles for people to declare that they no longer saw race, but translation would be required. As her friend Verna Williams put it, “So many people have no idea about what black people are like. They feel they know us when they really don’t.” Lambasted early as “Mrs. Grievance” and “Barack’s Bitter Half,” Michelle knew the burden of making herself understood. One of her favorite descriptions of her Washington life came from a California college student who described the role of first lady as “the balance between politics and sanity.”

During her years in the spotlight, Michelle became a point of reference and contention. She built and nurtured her popularity and emerged as one of the most recognizable women in the world. “You do not want to underestimate her, ever,” said Trooper Sanders, a White House aide. Indeed, Michelle seemed to stride through life, full of confidence and direction. Comfortable in her own skin, friends always said. Authentic. But when asked what she would say to her younger self, as an interviewer flashed her high school yearbook photo onto a giant screen, Michelle paused to consider. “I think that girl was always afraid. I was thinking ‘Maybe I’m not smart enough. Maybe I’m not bright enough. Maybe there are kids that are working harder than me.’ I was always worrying about disappointing someone or failing.”

At Constitution Hall, addressing 158 Anacostia seniors dressed in cobalt blue gowns, Michelle shared her history and her self-doubt. She offered advice and encouragement but skipped the saccharine. “You can’t just sit around,” she instructed. “Don’t expect anybody to come and hand you anything. It doesn’t work that way.” She asked them to think about the obstacles faced by Frederick Douglass, their neighborhood’s most illustrious former resident, born into slavery and self- educated in an era when it was illegal to teach slaves to read or write. His mother died when he was a boy and he never knew his father. But he made it, “persevering through thick and thin,” and spent decades fighting for equality. She also asked them to consider the current occupants of the White House. “We see ourselves in each and every one of you. We are living proof for you, that with the right support, it doesn’t matter what circumstances you were born into or how much money you have or what color your skin is. If you are committed to doing what it takes, anything is possible. It’s up to you.”

A First Lady that really cares
By Brooklyn
I'm really not into politics but after reading this book I found it very thought provoking and I felt a stronger connection to Michelle not just as the First Lady but as a strong person. Despite all the No's she received she still remained positive and didn't let it stop her from moving forward. She genuinely cared for those things she was passionate about I could really feel that with each part of the story I read.
In world where there is so much hatred it was refreshing to hear her struggles and accomplishments to overcome and try to help others achieve those same goals..
I feel that any other reader deciding to read this book will enjoy it's articulate , quirkiness , and learn things you might not know about Michelle Obama and former President Obama that made them in my opinion classy.

"A Total Package"
By Amazon Customer
I am such a "fan" of Michelle Obama. She is down to earth, says it like it is and has total confidence in who she is. I loved how she prioritized her goals. She had a plan from the beginning and she worked hard to make it happen. I loved how Barack Obama took her by surprise and when she saw what a decent, purposeful man he was, he had her at "Hello". She is so grounded as a daughter, sister, wife and mother, yet she also values herself and found a way to make "girl time", which she realized was necessary to keep her emotional balance. I loved her book, her honesty and above all her ability to love unconditionally.

No Picnic: 3 Commando Brigade in the South Atlantic : 1982, by Julian Thompson

This book tells how in 1982 Britain went to war with Argentina, whose troops had invaded and occupied the Falkland Islands, a British Crown Colony. In a campaign lasting a little over two months, British servicemen reoccupied the islands and, after several hard-fought actions, forced the invaders to surrender. This is Brigadier Julian Thompson's story: he led 3 Commando Brigade who bore the brunt of the fighting. It is a first-hand account of a war that was, by any standards, balanced upon a knife-edge between triumph and disaster. In this revised edition of 3 Commando Brigade's actions in the Falklands - first written while the events were still fresh in the author's mind - the text has been enhanced by important additions to the public's knowledge of the land campaign, as well as insights into the difficulties and frustrations of command.

History of Art: The Western Tradition, Vol. 1: Prehistoric Through Gothic Art, 6th edition, by H. W. Janson, Anthony F. Janson

For two-semester courses in Art History Survey and for Introductory Art courses taught from a historical perspective. The definitive survey of the Western Art tradition-the standard against which all other art history surveys are measured-this classic text uses an exceptional art program, impeccable scholarship, rich color, accurate illustrations printed in five colors, and student-friendly pedagogy to introduce readers to the vast world of Western painting, sculpture, architecture, photography, and the minor arts. With an effectively written, balanced, and interesting narrative, it presents art as a succession of styles-from Prehistory through the 1990s-and enlarges students' capacity to appreciate individual works of art in and of themselves, not merely to accumulate data about them.

About the Author
H. W. JANSON is a legendary name in the field of art history. For more than twenty-five years professor of fine arts at New York University, he produced an impressive list of publications. Among them are many books that remain standard references, including The Story of Painting for Young People (with Dora Jane Janson, his wife), The Sculpture of Donatello, 19th Century Art (with Robert Rosenblum), and 19th-Century Sculpture. His world-famous History of Art has been translated into more than a dozen languages. Twice a Guggenheim Fellow, Professor Janson was for three years editor-in-chief of the scholarly journal Art Bulletin. ANTHONY F. JANSON, professor of art history at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, has forged a distinguished career as a teacher, writer, and museum professional. Besides authoring books, catalogs, and articles on Western art from the Renaissance to 1900, he has held curatorial posts at the Indianapolis Museum of Art; the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida; and the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh. After his father's death in 1982, Dr. Janson took over authorship of History of Art and History of Art for Young People, on which he had earlier collaborated.

ISBN# 0-13-019729-7 is for volume 1 which only covers "Prehistoric Through Gothic Art"... very disappointing considering I ordered this book under the assumption that it went up through the postmodern period

Useful survey of Western art
By FrKurt Messick
In the introduction to this edition, Anthony Janson (whose father, H.W. Janson, still has top billing for the volume) talks about the long tradition he and his father have had toward this volume and the larger work that carries the same name. It has been a standard in Western art education for decades, and the revisions periodically placed serve to bring new interpretations, perspectives and finds into the mix of history.

Prior to diving into the depths of art, Janson provides a primer - art history is a relatively new discipline, and often studied by historians and others with interest but relatively little training in artistic areas themselves. This book is about the visual arts (those of drama, music, etc. are not included here, but architecture is to some degree); Janson gives a brief survey of key concepts that are critical to understanding the mediums (artists, Janson states, prefer to use the plural of medium as mediums rather than media). Geometric and visual appreciation concepts are introduced, as are philosophical/aesthetic ideas.

The majority of the text is divided into four broad sections: The Ancient World, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance through the Rococo, and the Modern World. This is a book that really a survey or history of Western art - it does have a brief section at the beginning of the Ancient World on cave art and neolithic art in North America, but apart from this never wanders outside the main courses of Western art even in the modern period. As an introductory text, this is not surprising - many of the values and concepts of art in non-Western cultures require more explanation for adequate aesthetic appreciation of their art than an introductory survey course could cover. Still, it is a deficit worthy of note for those who are looking for a more comprehensive volume.

The Ancient World covers art of Egypt, the Fertile Crescent and Persia, Aegean/Greek art, Etruscan art, and Roman art. The section on the Middle Ages begins primarily with the rise of Christendom as the dominant political power - this includes Byzantine art, early Medieval art (Carolingian and Ottonian times), Romanesque, and the ascendancy of the Gothic style, including the great Abbey of St-Denis. The Renaissance focusses early on Italy, but also explores the Renaissance influences in Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, France, and England. The Modern Period is the most diverse, with movements such as Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, Art Nouveau and other schools that had a greater tendency to cross national boundaries. The twentieth century brought about a great explosion of artistic expressions, in architecture, sculpture, painting and photography, each of which get a chapter. While the fourth section begins with a discussion of modernism, it ends with the discussion of post-modernism, a period of transition.

The colour reproductions throughout are stunning, and the use of black-and-white images to highlight details is also useful. Two-thirds of the 600 illustrations are in colour. The photographs showing architectural styles are interesting, far from being boring 'sample' shots. The text is engaging and informative, achieving a good balance between the artistic, the philosophical and the historical. There are maps, chronological tables, a glossary of terms, suggestions for further readings arranged topically, and a very useful index (always a plus for students and scholars).
