In 1965 Frank Herbert published Dune. After it was heralded as a masterpiece of science fiction, he wrote the briefer Dune Messiah in 1969, concentrating eponymously on Paul Atreides, and then, sensing the sales potential, added sequels. They were continued by his son, culminating in the just published finale, Sandworms of Dune. Now, 38 years after its publication, four narrators capture Dune Messiah on discs, while listeners, with no glossary, try to recall the meaning of its esoteric nomenclature. The audio gets off to a lively start as the book opens with nearly all conversation, playing up the camaraderie between the narrators who have partnered on several other readings of classic sci-fi novels. While the cast works well together, some of the male narrators emphasize a stately dullness. Kellgren, the sole feminine voice, supplies real emotion and a true sense of awe. (Oct.)

Difficult sequel.

This first sequel to Dune is only about 330 pages long, but it's still a dense and complex read. Dune Messiah picks up the story of Paul Maud'Dib 12 years after Dune, now the Emperor of the Known Universe- and as powerless as he ever. While a challenging read, Dune Messiah lacks the narrative drive of its predecessor, since there is no longer compelling villains like the Harkonnens to help propel the story forward and keep things moving. Plot threads and characters from the original that were implied to be of great importance in the future only warrant a brief mention or are totally ignored; likewise, Dune Messiah continues Herbert's tendency from the original to not depict major events or plot twists, but leave them only to discussion after the fact The original Dune, for all its thematic complexity, was still a fairly straightforward "hero leads a rebellion against evil villains" tale; in the sequel, there is a conspiracy in place against Paul Maud'Dib, but the novel spends more time on philosophical discussion than it does on investigating and unmasking this conspiracy. There is, however, a lengthy section of the novel about 2/3 of the way through, which sees the main character going out in disguise among the people, deliberately walking into a trap, and fully aware of how events will proceed due to his unique prescient abilities - this section alone is some of the finest crafted storytelling I've ever read, and it alone resuscitated the novel. (Or awakened the Sleeper, if you're a hardcore Dune fan.) Dune Messiah is a quick read, despite the denseness of the work. It's still worth reading, but at times it feels more like an epilogue to a more compelling story that preceded it. (Think less Empire Strikes Back and more Scouring of the Shire from Lord of the Rings.)

All heroes must be banished or crucified in the end.

Joseph Campbell wrote in his monumental work "Hero with thousands faces" that in the end, after a hero has fulfilled his destiny of delivering a boon ( whether it is a new ideology, technology or victory over oppressor) s/he must be sacrificed or banished. One can look at this from this point of view. A hero is a product of a terrible need in the society. Once the need is satisfied, he is discarded as he may be found too disruptive or restrictive to the process of societal adaptation within a context of a new status quo. Another scenario would be an ossification of society in slavish worshiping of a hero and creation of a prophet cult. Of course, we see all these twists play themselves out in this sequel. I find some of the twists of plot preposterous, so that's why I am only giving this book three stars. From political point of view, I find it hard to believe that Guild would allow Paul's assassination as it certainly would be more disruptive to the spice production than any of the alternatives. Paul with his connections to Fremen was the best to run the business.

Dune Messiah is a political masterpiece

Dune Messiah is another wonderful epic novel in Frank Herbert's series. Herbert's writing is poetic, provocative, and full of rich dialogue and wonderful characterization. He melds science with philosophy, history, and politics. But Dune Messiah also has major differences from its predecessor. It's more political and the major battles are psychological, in the unknown rather than the physical, and it's much heavier in character development. Where Dune was a sweeping hero's story of Paul Atreides' transformation from a boy into a sort of God, who fought oppression and spread hope for a brighter future, Dune Messiah is a story of the conflicts actually forging such a future creates. Paul is surrounded by enemies and religious fanatics of his Jihad. He struggles to balance religion with politics, the crushing moral weight of the Jihad's death toll with the lives liberated by its conquests, and the press of materialistic outworlders with the traditional values of Fremen culture. It's about him struggling every day to choose the best future for his empire when he sees thousands of bleak futures before him which paralyze him. It's about the strength of love and the lonely isolation of power. Dune Messiah unfolds witty political intrigues that are never predictable or tacky, and delves deeper into Paul and Alia's characters and shows the flaws and humanity hidden underneath a shroud of mysticism. It also reintroduces some favorite characters from Dune. It's different from Dune, but great. So far Herbert's Dune series has never failed to impress.
