About the Author
James M. Henslin was born in Minnesota, graduated from high school and junior college in California and from college in Indiana. Awarded scholarships, he earned his Master’s and doctorate degrees in sociology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. After this, he was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the National Institute of Mental Health, and spent a year studying how people adjust to the suicide of a family member. His primary interests in sociology are the sociology of everyday life, deviance, and international relations. He has published widely in sociology journals, including Social Problems and American Journal of Sociology. While a graduate student, Jim Henslin taught at the University of Missouri at St. Louis. After completing his doctorate, he joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, where he is Professor Emeritus of Sociology. He says, “I’ve always found the introductory course enjoyable to teach. I love to see students’ faces light up when they first glimpse the sociological perspective and begin to see how society has become an essential part of how they view the world.” Henslin enjoys reading and fishing. His two favorite activities are writing and traveling. He especially enjoys visiting and living in other cultures, for this brings him face to face with behaviors and ways of thinking that he cannot take for granted, experiences that “make sociological principles come alive.”

The book was not in the very best condition, but I did order a used edition

I needed this book, "Essentials of Sociology," for my Sociology class in college. The book arrived in the mail in a very timely manner, it did not take long to arrive. The book, "Essential of Sociology," was actually somewhat interesting. The book was not in the very best condition, but I did order a used edition. The book was much cheaper here on Amazon than it was at my local college bookstore, or anywhere else I looked, for that matter. The book was a very fair price, and not way over priced! Although I did not find my Sociology class very interesting, I did find the book very interesting. Each chapter begins with a story from a personal experience had by the author, and the story relates to what we would learn in each chapter. The stories at the beginning of the chapter really brought the learning to life! The book also had pictures and experiences, making it much more personal.

Fantastic textbook!!

Out of all the textbooks I've ever had for every college class I have taken, this is definitely one of my favorites. Not only does it present the material in an organized and easy to understand way, but it gives very very good examples to help the student/reader thoroughly understand the theories and concepts. I am in school but I'm not particularly organized and I have a short attention span when it comes to reading textbooks, but I have found myself having no issue studying from this book for long periods of time, and I think that's because of how interesting the book is and how easy it is to understand. I would recommend this book to anyone, even if you are just curious about sociology. I have learned a lot about myself and the environment around me due to this book.

ITEM NOT AS DESCRIBED *AT ALL* Not a digital version, it's a disgusting used printed copy with NO DIGITAL ACCESS CODE INCLUDED, as stated in description (which is the most important part smh). I waited 2 days for this? I could have ordered the digital version from Peason, my college bookstore, Barnes & Noble, or a plethora of other more reputable options by now rather than this nonsense. Thanks to the scheming degenerate who wrote the deceptive description. You deserve a negative 0 if there were such a thing, you've earned it!
