get involved in a murder mystery in a town named Brilliant, Ohio

Two boys, fast friends, get involved in a murder mystery in a town named Brilliant, Ohio. One boy's mother is killed. Was it an accident or murder? Our story involves the boys' attempts to solve the mystery. The quest covers the years from grade school through senior high and graduation. Along the way their efforts include spending the night in a cemetery, digging up bones, hiding from an abusive father in an attic. All this time the boys are growing up in the Ohio River country and small town life. There's fishing, baseball, football and girls, small town characters, and a disgraced ex con former police detective. This is a well written tale; the principals are well developed, believable and caring. Plot holds one's interests. A well deserved 5 stars!!!

Crime with psychological justice

Remembered: the high school years; full of hi school activities, leisure times, and what a true & deep friendship, Travis and Mitch, (yikes, the attic), & a rich and fondly described Brilliant, OH (& the true & present decline of success & prosperity of this area). Mr. Yocum filled out the mystery with a terrible tragic secret, and an innocent child grew up being neglected, consistently and arbitrarily abused by a cruel soul, his own father. To me, maybe incorrectly and looking too deeply, it is interesting , Travis was THE punished... but Frank, the wicked thing, was to live with ...// Travis broke away from his cruel childhood , not passing the cruelty, but to rise above. How varied, some shallow, some kind, good, tortured, and complex the characters are. The beginning of this story set me up for an ending of sorrows; and I recommend this book to those who appreciate mystery, quiet, effective & psychological justice, & triumph.

Tremendous murder mystery with many plot twists. Robin Yocum once again creates a unique plot in eastern Ohio by intertwining a creative story with the blue collar culture of the steel valley. His character development invites you back to a more simpler, small town culture where the unthinkable strikes this river community.
