Sweet, funny romance, culturally grounded

Tell me again how a crush should feel

I loved this story - the writing is REALLY good, it's funny and even made me laugh out loud in parts (which rarely happens when I read). Mostly this is because Leila, the main character is funny and so likeable. The portrait of her as a first gen. Iranian-American is really good, and she expresses well the tensions and fears she has about coming out, within her family and beyond (and the author demonstrates well that no culture has a monopoly of sexual conservativism). She also portrays this Iranian-American family as more culturally diverse within the family than might otherwise be thought of (even if they are in the economic elite). There are also some really lovely moments where a relationship changes or turns, and Farizan really captures the excitement, the nervousness, and the wonder of some of these moments, told through Leila’s perspective – her writing can be direct and sweet. And this is not just a ‘coming out’ romance either, it’s about being young, finding (or rediscovering) someone, and falling in love – all universal human themes, regardless of gender and orientation. I’d like to read more by her.

Great title and fun read.

This is my introduction to Sara Farizan's writing as part of the #ReadProud challenge for the Authors of Color category.

First of all, can I say this is one of the best titles I've seen ever? It's clever. It's deep. It sets the tone for the entire piece.

This is also one of my first true teen romances that I've read, where romance really is the main plot. I suspect my few, personal, microscopic critiques in regards to this book are due to my lack of knowledge about the genre.

This was a fast read, and the audiobook was pretty enthusiastic. We follow Layla through the course of her school and her crush on an extremely toxic girl who was bad news from the get-go. I'm being cautious of names due to potential spoilers. I suspect some people fell for that girl's charm and then felt a huge plot twist when Layla puts together just how horrible this girl actually is.

Although predictable with the eventual love interest (a much better choice though gross, smoking), we see justice. We see Iranian-immigrant parents struggle with their daughter's sexuality. We have an uplifting ending. We have people who want to come into their own. We have some moments where things are just charming.

IMO, Tomas needs to be punched in the face. Repeatedly. He was the biggest flaw in the book and although he was created to capture the really catty, bitchy gay theatre men, it felt a bit on the extreme side. THAT SAID, although that was my opinion (him being the biggest flaw in the book), I'm new to romance. It's entirely possible that for a teen romance he's actually exactly what was/is necessary for success.

The middle school play section seemed unnecessary and like it was designed for word count, however again, this is something that could be wrong.

I'm giving this a 4-star. My personal opinions on some of the flaws aside, I think it's a very important book and I think it'd delight a lot of younger teenagers.

Cute, coming of age and coming out novel!

A really cute coming of age, and coming out story about an Iranian American girl in high school trying to navigate who she is. She comes from a really traditional family so she's afraid they won't accept her as a lesbian so she won't come out to anyone in her life. Then a new girl comes and stirs up nonsense. I love the adorable relationship which started out as a friendship between Leila our MC and Lisa. I love that she had so many accepting friends even if they had to work through some things together. Over all it was really sweet and a fun read!

Based on three lectures distinguished Nigerian novelist Chinua Achebe gave at Harvard University in 1998, this short but trenchant work does not pretend to be a full-fledged autobiography. Instead, Achebe makes forceful use of his personal experiences to examine the political nature of culture. Born in 1930, the son of a Christian convert, young Achebe received a privileged colonial education and "was entranced by the far-away and long-ago worlds of the stories [in English books like Treasure Island and Ivanhoe], so different from the stories of my home and childhood." Yet he and fellow university students indignantly rejected Anglo-Irishman Joyce Cary's highly praised novel Mister Johnson, which bore no resemblance to their knowledge of Nigerian life. This encounter "call[ed] into question my childhood assumption of the innocence of stories," Achebe comments, using scathing assessments of white Kenyan writer Elspeth Huxley and Indian/Caribbean expatriate V.S. Naipaul to remind us that all literature reflects its creators' beliefs and prejudices. Achebe is not an enemy of Western culture; he merely asserts Africans' right to their own perspective and their own art, as exemplified in works like his groundbreaking 1958 novel, Things Fall Apart. Though it is labeled autobiographical by the publisher, this small book, which originated as three lectures given at Harvard University in December 1998, barely covers the rudiments of Achebe's long and productive life (he is now 70). But the great Nigerian novelist and poet, a master of compression, needs little more than 100 pages to tell the dramatic story of the emergence of a native African literature; in the 1950s, students at English-dominated universities started speaking out against the long European tradition of depicting Africans as "a people of beastly living, without a God, laws, religion," which dates back to Captain John Lok's voyage to West Africa in 1561. "Until the lions produce their own historian," says Achebe, quoting an African proverb of uncertain provenance, "the story of the hunt will glorify only the hunter." With characteristic ease and economy, he traces the long African tradition of asserting the worth of the individual, born of Igbo myths that described each community as created separately with its own original ancestor. This notion of individuality, which made the Africans vulnerable to the Atlantic slave traders and to colonial occupation, is the same quality that defined the native African fiction and poetry that emerged in the 1950s, at the time of independence for many African nations. To love Achebe is to love Africa and language. As he is Africa's most prominent novelist and critic, this book's 100-plus pages don't seem ample enough to chronicle the development of such an extraordinary intellectual and literary talent. Furthermore, because of his lyrical prose and accessible ideas, at the end one is left desiring more of Achebe's ruminations (both serious and humorous) on empire, postcolonialism, Western writers (e.g., Joseph Conrad, Graham Greene, and Elspeth Huxley) on Africa, universal culture, and expatriation and exile. Reading Achebe is to know Africa in a way that few are able to tell. Achebe weaves anecdotes from his childhood, schooling, and writing life with African proverbs and literary and political theory to contribute beautifully to the "process of 're-storying' peoples who had been knocked silent by the trauma of all kinds of dispossession." His passion and truth are sensuous and contagious, warming one's soul. Highly recommended for all libraries.

Once again the writer describes a story with feelings and keen narration..the reader will not put it down..one must relate to the story and you will find yourself deep in thought,, Achebe is a unreconized icon..I used his "things fall apart" when I was an educator.. and the students loved it and they still recomended it to other students..literatue at is best

I love Achebe. So I love this collection of three of his essays. His prose is clean and concrete, he is clear and intelligent. Since these are from public lectures he gave at various points, it's easy to read them as they were meant to be engaging. A great little book for anyone interested in learning more about Achebe and postcolonial studies.

The presentation is fluid and elegant.....a piece of art from the master story teller and humanist. I recommend this book to all those who believe that every culture should have a place in the global table and that diversity makes the world a better place. I am a great fan of Achebe and this book has lived up to the high billing I have of him. Kudos to a great man of letters.

Life-changing book for my husband and me - must read

This has been a life-changing book for my husband and me. He read this book to me when I was suffering from anxiety and depression. Morning after morning, I would lie on the couch while he read. I found it calming, and it helped me focus on something other than my anxiety and depression. At first, I was unable to discuss it with him, but gradually, with time, counseling and medication, I got better, and we began having wonderful discussions about each day's reading and how it applied to our lives. At some point, we began taking turns reading. We took this book on trips with us, and would read it in our car or hotel room. If we missed a day, we missed it. When we finished, we tried several different inspirational books, but so far, nothing has compared. I've just ordered DailyOM: Learning to Live, and look forward to reading it. I'm feeling much better these days, and my counselor tells me whatever I've been doing, keep doing it! At some point, we will re-read DailyOM: Inspirational Thoughts for a Happy, Healthy, and Fulfilling Day. It's that good, and will be a permanent part of our library as a "go to" book when we need gentle guidance with a positive perspective. I can't recommend it highly enough. Brava!

Keeps your Spirit up

I am already on the email list for DailyOm for years now. It was especially helpful when I would arrive at work, open my email and read it before the day started. I have shared the site with a few friends and since purchasing the book, will be sure to give as gifts on Friendship Day in August. I have been reading the Learning to Live in the morning and DailyOM: Inspirational Thoughts for a Happy, Healthy, and Fulfilling Day in the evening just before bed. I am not as consistent as I would like but enjoy it and think this would be great as a book club choice to discuss.

Great book but page printed upside down :-(

I loved this book from my childhood so I ordered the 60th edition for my daughter. One of the pages is printed upside down. It's in order and perfectly readable but I feel disappointed.

Warning About Board Book Version!

Harold and the purple crayon is a wonderful classic tale of imagination that I remember from my childhood. It is an excellent book to help children ponder the difference between reality and fantasy. One of the most magical parts of the book is how the pages turn in anticipation of what Harold will draw next. Timing and the sequential unfolding of the story is critical to the book's magic.

As such, the new board book version of Harold is a major distortion of the original magical book. Pages and words are combined and illustrations completely omitted compared to the original. As a result most of the magic is lost. I urge you to buy another version than this Board Book. I bought them as gifts and had to return them. If anyone can comment on how faithful the paperback version is to the original story, I would suggest purchasing that for now. This Board Book is NOT the same magical story.

I won't bother going in to the story of Harold and the Purple Crayon, as I'm certain almost anybody considering this purchase grew up with the book at one time or another.

However, I did want to offer this suggestion to everyone: spend the extra money on the hardcover edition.

I may have set my expectations a bit high, but since the paperback price was relatively expensive (costing 30 - 50% more than comparable paperbacks) and touted as the 50th Anniversary Edition, I thought it would be "nice". However, I have to say that I was pretty disappointed with the construction quality.

Unless you're giving it to a teenager or adult as a keepsake type of gift, the paperback isn't going to stand up against an age-appropriate child, or to time itself. If I hadn't bought it as part of the 4-for-3 promotion, I'd almost certainly exchange it for the hardcover.

About the Author

Mohammad Modarres is a professor of nuclear engineering and reliability engineering. His research areas are system reliability modeling, probabilistic risk analysis, probabilistic physics of failure, and uncertainty modeling and analysis. He is a consultant to several government and private organizations as well as national laboratories. Prof. Modarres has published more than 200 papers in professional journals and proceedings of conferences; three books; and a number of book chapters, edited books, and handbooks. He is a University of Maryland Distinguished Scholar-Teacher, a fellow of the American Nuclear Society, and has received a number of other awards in reliability engineering and risk assessment. Prof. Modarres received his PhD in nuclear engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1979 and his MS in mechanical engineering from MIT in 1977.

Mark Kaminskiy is the chief statistician at the Center of Technology and Systems Management, University of Maryland (College Park). Dr. Kaminskiy is a researcher and consultant in reliability engineering, life data analysis, and risk analysis of engineering systems. He has conducted numerous research and consulting projects funded by the government and industrial companies such as the Department of Transportation, the Coast Guard, the Army Corps of Engineers, the Navy, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Ford Motor Company, Qualcomm Inc., and several other engineering companies. He has taught several graduate courses on reliability engineering at the University of Maryland. Dr. Kaminskiy is the author or coauthor of over 50 publications in journals, conference proceedings, and reports.

Vasiliy Krivtsov is a senior staff technical specialist in reliability and statistical analysis with Ford Motor Company. He holds MS and PhD degrees in electrical engineering from Kharkov Polytechnic Institute, Ukraine, and a PhD in reliability engineering from the University of Maryland. Dr. Krivtsov is the author or coauthor of over 40 professional publications, including a book on reliability engineering and risk analysis, nine patented inventions, and three Ford trade secret inventions. He is an editor of Reliability Engineering and System Safety journal and is a member of the IEEE Reliability Society. Prior to Ford, Dr. Krivtsov held the position of associate professor of electrical engineering in Ukraine and that of a research affiliate at the Center for Reliability Engineering, University of Maryland. I was looking for a book about reliability theory and calculations. I reviewed the books recommended by the Society for Maintenance and Reliability Professionals (SMRP). Between them I decided for this one and as far I have been using is the one I was looking for my reliability inquiries.

Dennis Lehane, master of the hard-boiled thriller, generated a cult following with his series about private investigators Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro, wowed readers with the intense and gut-wrenching Mystic River, blew fans all away with the mind-bending Shutter Island, and switches gears with Coronado, his new collection of gritty short stories (and one play).

Cormac McCarthy sets his new novel, The Road, in a post-apocalyptic blight of gray skies that drizzle ash, a world in which all matter of wildlife is extinct, starvation is not only prevalent but nearly all-encompassing, and marauding bands of cannibals roam the environment with pieces of human flesh stuck between their teeth. If this sounds oppressive and dispiriting, it is. McCarthy may have just set to paper the definitive vision of the world after nuclear war, and in this recent age of relentless saber-rattling by the global powers, it's not much of a leap to feel his vision could be not far off the mark nor, sadly, right around the corner. Stealing across this horrific (and that's the only word for it) landscape are an unnamed man and his emaciated son, a boy probably around the age of ten. It is the love the father feels for his son, a love as deep and acute as his grief, that could surprise readers of McCarthy's previous work. McCarthy's Gnostic impressions of mankind have left very little place for love. In fact that greatest love affair in any of his novels, I would argue, occurs between the Billy Parham and the wolf in The Crossing. But here the love of a desperate father for his sickly son transcends all else. McCarthy has always written about the battle between light and darkness; the darkness usually comprises 99.9% of the world, while any illumination is the weak shaft thrown by a penlight running low on batteries. In The Road, those batteries are almost out--the entire world is, quite literally, dying--so the final affirmation of hope in the novel's closing pages is all the more shocking and maybe all the more enduring as the boy takes all of his father's (and McCarthy's) rage at the hopeless folly of man and lays it down, lifting up, in its place, the oddest of all things: faith. --Dennis Lehane

Violence, in McCarthy's postapocalyptic tour de force, has been visited worldwide in the form of a "long shear of light and then a series of low concussions" that leaves cities and forests burned, birds and fish dead and the earth shrouded in gray clouds of ash. In this landscape, an unnamed man and his young son journey down a road to get to the sea. (The man's wife, who gave birth to the boy after calamity struck, has killed herself.) They carry blankets and scavenged food in a shopping cart, and the man is armed with a revolver loaded with his last two bullets. Beyond the ever-present possibility of starvation lies the threat of roving bands of cannibalistic thugs. The man assures the boy that the two of them are "good guys," but from the way his father treats other stray survivors the boy sees that his father has turned into an amoral survivalist, tenuously attached to the morality of the past by his fierce love for his son. McCarthy establishes himself here as the closest thing in American literature to an Old Testament prophet, trolling the blackest registers of human emotion to create a haunting and grim novel about civilization's slow death after the power goes out. 250,000 announced first printing; BOMC main selection.(Oct.)

In his new novel, McCarthy exchanges the bleak Western setting of previous works for an even bleaker post-apocalyptic one. As usual, lawless space engenders violence, but here a nuclear holocaust has reduced everything to ash, mummifying all but a few unlucky souls, who must kill or be killed (and eaten). The main characters are a father and his son, who was born a few nights after the bombs fell. "We're still the good guys," the man repeatedly assures the boy as they scavenge their way south for the winter, trying to avoid "bad guy" survival techniques. Even by McCarthy's standards, the horrors here—an infant "headless and gutted and blackening on the spit"—are extreme, and, deprived of historical context, his brutality can seem willful. But McCarthy's prose retains its ability to seduce—the deathscape is "like the onset of some cold glaucoma dimming away the world"—and there are nods to the gentler aspects of the human spirit.

Dark but beautiful

To say that The Road is a rather dark book would be quite the understatement....
As far as dystopian literature goes, this is quite a step.
The story of a father and his son, walking to the sea through a ravaged, cold and grey world, hoping to somehow, find a better place, doesn't leave much space for a happy ending. Bleak is truly bleak here, not a lot of silver linings!
And yet...and yet, this is a beautiful book.
The writing is fantastic, for starter. The style, with short and descriptive sentences, carries the story to perfection. It also has a poetic quality that softens what is said/described and gives it another dimension.
The real beauty of the novel isn't on the outside though, but resides inside, in the incredible bond uniting father and son, a love so deep and unconditional that it seems to erase age gap and life experience, to only focus on their desire to care for each other. This love and concomitant sense of humanity stripped to its essence, manage to give sense and meaning to their otherwise hopeless journey.
On a deeper level, it also seems to invite us to reflect on what makes a life meaningful: beyond a primal survival instinct, what makes life worth living even when there is no hope in sight? The Road's answer is that, ultimately, what matters isn't "what" makes your life, but "how" you choose to live that "what"...

I'm a father. I read The Road years ago when my son was nine. I honestly had no idea at the time that I was picking up a book about a father and his roughly nine year old son. That's not a spoiler, you find that out on the first page.

Look, Cormac McCarthy writes so well I actually come back to his books on my shelves and open them up randomly, just to read a page and soothe my brain. But he digs the knife in so deep. I've actually hesitated to review his books before because there is so much beauty in the writing I just don't have the first ability to get a sense of it across.

More than that. I actually resented him after finishing this book. I wanted to shake his hand and punch him in the face. Maybe that's why I waited so long to finally admit this book deserves any accolade I could give it.

I finished The Road while sitting on a plane in Hong Kong, waiting to take off in the rain. I was a grown man, struggling so hard not to sob out loud that I started to choke. You might want to try "All the Pretty Horses" first, or even "No Country for Old Men," but those will grip you, too. I've never seen the man pull a punch. I think it also might depend where you are in your life. Just take my advice, if you're a father and you have a young boy, hold off on this, or at least read it when no one is around.

If There is No Hope Left, Should You Continue to Live?

If you are a father of a young son, this will be a deeply moving and disturbing book to read. Heck, if you are a human being, this will be a disturbing book. I was actually warned by a fellow father: "Do not read that book!" But, I wanted to read McCarthy and frankly, this seemed more palatable than Blood Meridian.

I read the book very slowly - in fact, the way its written, you are forced to slowly swallow and linger on the words McCarthy uses - and that leads to terrifying dread for the characters in the book. I had to read it in a day because I simply wanted it to end. Reading this story is like walking on the edge of a cliff. It is tense, the imagery at times is shocking, and the small, beautiful human relationship between father and son is something you want to preserve as long as you can in the bleak world that McCarthy has created, a bleak world that is completely realistic.

The moral question for me in this story is, if there is no beauty, no hope and not even a semblance of human love left on this Earth, and every day is a day that can bring perilous, brutal, gut wrenching violence on you and your loved ones, is it better to continue on Earth or is simply better to take your life and the ones you love? I have to admit that throughout points in this book, I was hoping that the characters would take their own lives. That McCarthy was able to pose this question in such a realistic and cold world is a compliment to his talent.

I am a chicken when it comes to seeing movies or reading stories where there is disturbing violence committed on innocents. As such, I carefully started this book but for those like me, do not hesitate. Read this story.
