Review
'This book will be an ideal text for senior undergraduates and postgraduate students. The information is up-to-date, informative and well-illustrated and will allow readers to make valued decisions on the relevance and importance of mineral resources and energy to our civilization. In addition, this book will be of great interest to the general public wanting to learn about mineral resources, economics and the environment.' Bruce Gemmell, University of Tasmania, Sandy Bay

'Stephen Kesler and Adam Simon have done a remarkably good job at presenting a wealth of information about mineral resources along with a balanced view of their economic, environmental and political context that should be easy to understand by technical and non-technical readers alike. They have made particularly good use of text boxes to highlight relevant information and to draw attention to some rather provocative topics that deserve discussion and debate. I strongly recommend this book as a necessary reference to all who are serious about understanding the role of mineral resources in societies today.' M. Stephen Enders, Colorado School of Mines

'I have been encouraging development of this revised edition for some time, as Mineral Resources, Economics and the Environment includes the ideal mix of topics for a course that I teach on global issues in Earth resources. In addition to the coverage of major energy, metallic, and industrial mineral commodities, the new chapter on technology elements is particularly timely. The new pedagogic insets are an excellent means to guide critical thinking on the complex interplay of societal mineral resources demand and its consequences. This revised edition should continue to be a leading textbook on Earth resources, as well as a useful reference for the non-specialist.' J. Richard Kyle, University of Texas, Austin

'... the three topics in the title of this book are intimately interrelated and an understanding of all three is required to best plan for increased demand for minerals as global population grows and economic development advances. This book contains a plethora of data and information that cannot be found easily elsewhere and provides a good gateway into the pertinent literature. It should be required reading for anyone taking a side in the 'development vs. environmental preservation' debates related to mineral and energy extraction. This should include policy makers both nationally and internationally. I see this book as a nice companion textbook for geosciences classes in mineral deposits and also in environmental science, and it is an excellent choice of a textbook for a class for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students designed to bridge the fields of mineral resources, environmental science, the law, and perhaps even ethics.' James A. Saunders, American Mineralogist

'Mineral resource use has burgeoned in the decades since this classic text first appeared. The authors retain most topics and illustrations in the second edition but thoroughly update reserve numbers, case studies, etc. The new edition is longer but organized in the same manner. Half of the 14 chapters are devoted to general subjects (e.g., exploration and mining law); others are specific to categories of commodities (e.g., precious metals/gems and agricultural/chemical minerals). ... The longest chapter concerns (nonrenewable) energy resources, so the authors define the term mineral broadly. New angles include the impacts of recent economic volatility and China's rapid expansion. The authors mention environmental aspects of various mining activities but argue that trade-offs are inevitable at this high level of consumption. Readers may need prior knowledge in [specific] areas but will be rewarded with a succinct overview of the entire mineral resource landscape.' B. M. Simonson, Choice

Highly valuable desk reference for professionals
By Amazon Customer
An excellent reference source and survey overview of economic minerals use and distribution in the Earths crust. The primary strenghts presented include a nice mix of technical geological process information which results in the known distribution of minerals and their use in society and the economics of minerals. The social license to mine in areas of high consumption is nicely presented along with the debates about who's backyard should extractive industries be located? Future editions could include more information on best practices for environmental protection, regulatory oversight and permitting, engineering controls, and monitoring at modern mining locations, and lessons learned from historical mining sites with respect to environmental impacts and the costs associated with those impacts.

Highly recommended to all professionals working in the minerals industries in addition to students preparing for careers in natural resources.

An Emotional Conclusion to a Must-Read Series
By Austine @ NovelKnight
How does someone review the most emotional, roller coaster ride of a series conclusion they've ever read? In truth? I'm not really sure but I have a lot of feels that I'm struggling to put into words.

I adored A Darker Shade of Magic when I first visited the four Londons of V.E. Schwab's world. It quickly made my list of must-read fantasies. Then came A Gathering of Shadows and all hell broke loose. So much happened and so fast that I was left in a daze upon finishing and forced to wait for what seemed like an eternity until A Conjuring of Light released.

Honestly, I was dreading the release a bit because it meant the end of the Shades of Magic series and I wasn't ready for that. I'm still not ready and I've already read it. So right, the book. Was it good?

Do you really need to ask me that?

I'll start by saying that while A Gathering of Shadows was crazy action and all sorts of things happening at once, A Conjuring of Light slowed things down a bit but not in a bad way. Loose ends needed to be tied up and I think of the three books, this was the most emotional both from the story perspective as well as reading it.

AGOS left off on a major cliffhanger that's quickly addressed at the beginning of ACOL but that's not the worst thing the gang has to deal with this time around. Where the book lacked some of the action of previous installments, it more than made up for it with the relationships between all the characters. Everyone has a part to play and are forced to make heartbreaking decisions that had me flying from one page to the next.

Goodness, this is hard without spoiling something from a previous book.

So the big bad from Black London has decided to take over a new world and while it's a battle of who will come out on top at the end of the day, there's a lot of backstory dropped into this one that you don't see in previous books. Holland, for example, gets a whole damn history written for him and I was internally bawling (just wait, the tears broke through by the end). He's a character that I loved to hate in ADSOM, then he began redeeming himself (marginally) in AGOS, and finally came around in ACOL.

Though he can't hold a candle to my ships. Last book we met Alucard and I fell in love with an unavailable "privateer" (I mean, Kell is my one true love so that's alright, I'll fight Lila). The sailor and Rhy needed a happy ending and I was screaming every few chapters because it was constantly under attack. There were moments I may have had a minor freak out. No big deal.

Those two had the biggest struggle of my ships. To be honest, I expected more with Lila and Kell but the two had that unspoken relationship where you know they're a thing but nothing is ever said. It comes through their actions. They did relatively well throughout the whole book, though had their respective personal struggles as well as balancing the dynamic of the entire group.

Somehow I've kept it together this far but just give me a moment. I have to talk about the ending.

The ending.

It's over.

First, every time I see the word Anoshe I start tearing up (and yes, that includes when I typed it). But it's nothing compared to when I reached that first conclusion of the story. You know, that moment when everything is (relatively) alright and what's coming up is the wrap-up, the conclusion to the conclusion.

I stopped reading, 17 pages to go. And I sat there, fighting the tears and the lump in my throat because somehow all those emotions snuck up on me. I don't cry very often, like ever really. And never over a book.

Almost ruined the pages with tears, y'all. Moved it just in time.

And so I picked up the book once more and I read those last 17 pages and closed it, completing the end of an extraordinary fantasy series. I have never had such a strong reaction to a series ending. Ever. And I'm not sure I will again.

Don't let these books go to the wayside. If you haven't started the series and decided to read this review anyway, I'm very confused but alright, now go read them! And if you're putting off ACOL... I understand. You'll likely never be ready for the end but know that you're not alone in that. And I don't think there's anything else I can truly say as my heart hurts too much to put those feelings in words. I'll just leave you with one that, if it holds no meaning now, it soon will.

Anoshe.

definitely better than book two for me, but not quite as good as book one
By Sneaky Burrito
I loved the first book in this series and I was less than enthusiastic about book two. My main problem with book two was the magic tournament. I just wasn't interested in this as a major event in the book; instead, the events happening behind the scenes, so to speak, were much more interesting. Thus, I was still excited to read this novel, book three. Because there can't be TWO magic tournaments in one series, right?

And this was definitely better than book two, though, at least to me, probably not as good as book one. If you are a fan of the series, definitely read it. If you were put off by book two, I'd still encourage you to read this one -- it is much better, plus you get some resolution. If you haven't started the series at all, go back to book one. This won't make the least bit of sense without it. (Also there are minor spoilers for books one and two here.)

There aren't really any new characters introduced here. All the major players were in books one and two. They may have had minor roles in the previous books (e.g., some sailors) but they are familiar faces. (I kind of think the second book, in addition to having the magic tournament, was an excuse to introduce a bunch of minor players for a side-plot that occurs near the end of this book.) Anyway, our main characters are Kell, an Antari (basically a top-level magic user) who has been adopted into the royal family of Arnes (where a parallel London exists), Lila, a thief from this book's equivalent of our world, Rhy, Kell's adoptive brother, Holland, Kell's Antari nemesis from yet another parallel London, and Alucard, a noble from Arnes who has been a mentor to Lila, an adversary to Kell, and a lover to Rhy.

I'll be honest, I didn't like Holland in the previous books. I think we weren't supposed to. We find out a lot more about him, about what's been driving him, here, and he becomes much more sympathetic. Holland's backstory is a good way to work in character development in a book with no new characters. (We also get a little background on Rhy's parents, as they get a few POV scenes. I found it difficult to identify with Emira, Rhy's mother, but Maxim, his father, was a bit easier to understand. I am going to have to take these bits about them and go back and think about their parts in books one and two now, to see if their actions make more sense. It is a little odd placing these bits of information here, near the end of the series, with Rhy really coming into his own. But if you like character studies, there is something for you here.)

I'm going to take a detour here and talk about what I didn't like. There were a couple of mysteries hinted at in earlier volumes that weren't resolved to my satisfaction. We learned earlier on that Lila was missing an eye and had a glass eye, but we never find out the circumstances surrounding the loss of her eye. We can speculate based on what we find out about her abilities in this book, but that is not quite the same as getting actual answers. Also, Kell wonders a lot about his past in the previous books; even his name comes from initials carved into his arm (KL). The speculation about Kell's past is at its highest point when he is on the outs with the royal family in Arnes in book two, but he gets a little more information here and then just kind of drops it. It's almost like the author remembered she hadn't handled this at the last minute and inserted the bit where he is given key information at the last minute. It's not really believable to me that someone who spent all of book two feeling put out that he had basically been used as a possession by his adoptive family, never allowed to leave the city, etc., suddenly accepts the Arnesian royals and forgets about everything else. In the scope of things, I guess these are minor, but they stand out to me, nonetheless.

Anyway, another thing I didn't care for was the main antagonist (Osaron). Although he does have some flaws that are, of course, exploited by the good guys, he is just too one-dimensional for me. He is a creature of magic and although it is tempting to read human motivations in him, he doesn't really have human characteristics. (On the other hand, I generally like the strategies the "good guys" come up with to deal with him. There are some successes -- including by members of the royal guard, priests, and other everyday people, not just the powerful main protagonists. But there are also some failures.)

One final complaint: at multiple points in the book, an object that was desperately needed by the characters to further the plot was mentioned. Once, it was a map. Another time, it was a particular artifact (the name of which escapes me). The map, at least, had been mentioned going all the way back to book one, though Lila, to whom it used to belong, didn't know what its purpose was. But in any case, each time the existence of such an object was mentioned, some character knew exactly where to find one. (One could make a similar argument about some rings found by Kell at the equivalent of a magic flea market. Although in that instance, he didn't even know what he needed and it still fell into his lap.)

What I did like: I was just more interested in reading this book than book two. I got through it a lot faster, chose to read instead of doing other things, etc. That is nearly always a good sign for me. Events surrounding Holland kept me guessing, too. Holland was actually a big strength for me in this book. He's a tragic character, but he and Kell are also stand-ins for their respective societies' treatment of magic and Antari and the struggle to survive. Holland knows more but he had to know more to get by. He's broken inside by what he's had to do, but he retains a bit of the idealism or optimism of his past.

A lot more was at stake in this book than just bragging rights for a tournament winner, and that was also appreciated. Plus, we get to see a little more of the world here. (What we see fits nicely with what we already know about Arnes and the surrounding lands and sea.) Despite some heroic efforts, everyone takes losses.

Other aspects of the book -- the writing style, the worldbuilding, etc. -- fit right in with everything developed in the previous two volumes. There are a few made-up words, but they generally fall under two categories (1) describing things that don't exist in our world or (2) activate spells (e.g., for the Antari to travel), so these don't bother me overly much. Other than that, honestly, the writing is not so noticeable. It simply fades to the background as it does its job of telling the story.

Even though I had a lot of issues with this book, I'm inclined to go easy on it as far as a star rating goes. I feel that it does need more stars than I gave book two, but not as many as I gave book one, and that leaves a 4. This is probably more of a 3.5 for me, but I'll round up.

Perfect conclusion for the series
By Katherine
What an incredibly satisfying end to the series. I naturally had high expectations for this book after having loved the previous two books, but even still, this book surpassed my expectations. I cried throughout the final section of the book, not necessarily because of the actual events happening on the page, but because it was so emotionally fulfilling and felt like such a satisfying conclusion to everything. Everything I could have hoped for in a final book.

Intimacy: Trusting Oneself and the Other, by Osho

"Hit-and-run" relationships have become common in our society as it has grown more rootless, less tied to traditional family structures, and more accepting of casual sex. But at the same time, there arises an undercurrent of feeling that something is missing-a quality of intimacy.

This quality has very little to do with the physical, though sex is certainly one possible door. Far more important is a willingness to expose our deepest feelings and vulnerabilities, with the trust that the other person will treat them with care. Ultimately, the willingness to take the risk of intimacy has to be grounded in an inner strength that knows that even if the other remains closed, even if that trust is betrayed, we will not suffer any permanent damage.

In this gentle and compassionate guide, Osho takes his readers step-by-step through what makes people afraid of intimacy, how to encounter those fears and go beyond them, and what they can do to nourish themselves and their relationships to support more openness and trust.

OSHO challenges readers to examine and break free of the conditioned belief systems and prejudices that limit their capacity to life in all its richness. He has been described by the Sunday Times of London as one of the "1000 Makers of the 20th Century" and by Sunday Mid-Day (India) as one of the ten people-along with Gandhi, Nehru, and Buddha-who have changed the destiny of India. More than a decade after his death in 1990, the influence of his teachings continues to expand, reaching seekers of all ages in virtually every country of the world.

Thought Provoking
By M. T. Crenshaw
Osho's teachings and philosophy, evident in Intimacy, are full of irreverence, sensitiveness, craziness, paradoxes, common sense and profound wisdom.

Intimacy is not a book about physical intimacy, but a book about emotional intimacy. The book is structured, basically, in chapters that discuss those elements that prevent you from becoming truly intimate with somebody else (the habit of reaction, being stuck on security, shadow-boxing, and being attached to false values), and those that will help you to become intimate (learn to relate without having a relationship, be true to yourself, listen to and accept yourself, trust yourself, learn to be vulnerable, be "selfish", learn the language of silence, and meditate), plus an introduction on what Intimacy is and is not, and a final section devoted to Q&A.

The language of the book is very simple and easy to understand, with a constant use of parables and metaphors. Osho was a lecturer and teacher after all, and his writing is a direct reflection of that, as this book, as others are a transcription of public speeches given by him. On the other hand, he is not a native English, so his English is straight forward and simple, and not the usual cryptic philosophical dry jargon that can drive you nuts.

Intimacy is full of wisdom, good advice and food for thought, which will resonate with you whether you are in a relationship or not, looking for one or not, you are a very social person or a reserved one. Intimacy will especially speak to you if you aren't a traditional person in the way you approach society, family, religion, gender roles and the world in general, but you need of help to clear your mind in periods of emotional distress or confusion, and when you need a wise adviser who is not at hand, or the advice you get doesn't provide you with any answers.

A few things I would like to criticise about Intimacy:
> Osho seems to be carried out by his own discourse, and he becomes repetitive and loopy in many occasions.
> Osho equals self-love with selfishness. Although some of his arguments are terrific and this equation is not straightforward, it is a dangerous association. I wonder whether the use of the word selfish/ness is the result of a linguistic calque from an Hindu word with a different meaning. Still, the identification doesn't work for me. I agree that self-love is a catalyst of change, that you cannot give that you don't have, and that you have to give voluntarily without restrictions. Put your mask first and then help others then (as they say on the safety instructions on a plane) is one thing. And put your mask and help others if you want or feel like it, is a very different one. Being selfish and self-centred, even if it is not in a narcissist way, is a bit unnatural, to me. Sharing is impossible if one is self-centred and selfish.
> Osho's criticism of self-improvement and goal setting. Be content with the present, simple be, do not think about the future and how to change it, do not waste your time on anything that is not this very moment, you are perfect and do not need of any improvement. Be happy being. I believe that living the present and being present are wonderful things, and also that setting goals to be socially praised or get fame is a senseless thing to do. I also believe that setting goals and self-improvement are necessary, and a way of getting rid of the limitations and conditioning that our time, society, family, gender or past negative experiences put on our shoulders. I also believe that self-improvement is done for our own sake, not for the public. My own life experience contradicts Osho's teachings in this regard.

I would not recommend this book, or any of Osho's, to anybody who is very traditional in values and way of living, or anybody who is a very religious person (meaning, very attached to a certain Church or religion with fixed views on God and the spirit). You've been warned. If you do, and become offended, you are the only one to blame.

OSHO!
By Webert Joseph
Beyond him possibly being a cult leader, you cannot deny the greatness that was Osho's mind. His stories, transcribed from his speeches and Q&A with the people who visited him, are like poetry. So what that he might have been a little off his rocker, a lot of the smartest people were :-) And there's a lot of positive things that you can extract from his books if you can look past the controversy that surrounded him. I usually highlight whatever I like from a book, after awhile I had to be really picky about what I liked the most because Osho shared so much wisdom, I didn't realize how much I was highlighting. Keep in mind that Osho was a Buddhist, so there is a lot of concepts that come from Buddhism in this book, but I feel that it really is appealing for anyone of any religious background to read. I loved this book.

Outside Lies Magic: Regaining History and Awareness in Everyday Places, by John R. Stilgoe, John Stilgoe

Outside Lies Magic is a book about the acute observation of ordinary things, about becoming aware in everyday places, about seeing in utterly new ways, about enriching your life unexpectedly.
For more than 20 years, John R. Stilgoe has developed and practiced the art of exploring the everyday world around us, where so much lies hidden just beneath the surface, offering uncommon knowledge if we but know what to look for. In this remarkable book, Stilgoe inspires us to become explorers on our own–on foot or on bicycle–and by so doing to reap the benefits of escaping, even temporarily, the traps of our programmed lives.

"Exploration encourages creativity, serendipity, invention," he writes. And while sharing his insights on how to explore, Stilgoe provides a fascinating pocket history of the American landscape, as striking in its originality as it is revealing. Stilgoe dissects our visual surroundings; his observations will transform the way you see everything. Through his eyes, an abandoned railroad line is redolent of history and future promise; front lawns recall our agrarian past; vacant lots hold cathedrals of potential.

From the electrical grid overhead to fences, malls, and main streets, Stilgoe offers a fresh understanding of the links and fractures in our society. After reading Outside Lies Magic, your world will never look the same again.

Amazon.com Review
What lies along the highway, just out of sight? How about behind that building? Or under the street? Most of us muse idly about such things as we take our walks or drive our cars, but only a few go further and explore the secret histories of the places where we live. Landscape historian John R. Stilgoe is one of these intrepid explorers; for years he has taught Harvard students to open their senses to the created environment we share, to gently dissect our neighborhoods and public spaces for the knowledge hidden in plain sight. In Outside Lies Magic, he lets us all in on these wonderful secrets.

Guiding us on tracks laid by utility and railroad companies, showing us the hidden territory of postal systems, Stilgoe reminds us that important frontiers lie invisible in our backyards and side streets, waiting for our attention. Though more interested in showing us how to see than telling us what there is to see, his descriptions of power-line right-of-ways, alley-side entrances, and hobo jungles provide compelling incentive for the reader to take his advice to heart and start looking around and asking questions of the community. If you think it's important to "think locally," Outside Lies Magic is an outstanding training manual. --Rob Lightner

From Publishers Weekly
In Common Landscape of America, 1580-1845, Stilgoe brilliantly traced the history and the meaning of man's imprint on the American environment. His new book, as informal and chatty as Common Landscape was scholarly, looks at the physical state of America today and encourages his readers to become "Explorers": unhurried, clear-eyed observers of the world they rush through. The book is wildly unevenAthe section on motels, for instance, does little more than belabor the obviousAand the repeated refrain to Open Your Eyes and Look Around becomes hectoring, but when Stilgoe lets his imagination run free, the results can become breathtaking. The chapter on interstate highways touches on such things as what's written on the backs of signs, the dirt tracks that parallel expressways, roadkill and what happens to it and what seemingly random patches of wild flowers may really signify. Perhaps the best chapter deals with fences and other ways people draw lines across the landscape to mark boundaries or create the illusion of privacy. Stilgoe calls this a "straightforward guidebook to exploring" whose purpose borders on the evangelical, but it's the sort of book that makes the reader want to buttonhole anyone handy and say, "Listen to this."

From Library Journal
Without the usual accretions of academic writing, the author, a respected Harvard architectural and landscape historian, attempts a highly personal narrative, calling for his readers to become more aware of the quickly disappearing world around them. Stilgoe manifests keen observational skills on his diverse, peculiar topics?utility and rail lines, postal service, interstate highways, fences, small-town main streets, and motels. Disappointingly, however, his collection of brief essays fails to deliver an integrated whole. The text, written from the perspective of an anonymous "explorer" bicycling around the country, frequently carries a tone of arrogance despite Stilgoe's veneer of familiarity, and his failure to supply substance and details for many of his intriguing generalizations proves troublesome. In his effort to write an accessible plea, the author delivers part jeremiad, part motivational pep talk, and part how-to guide, with occasional brilliant perceptions such as one countering the assumption that Americans are more visually sophisticated today than in previous generations. However, Stilgoe generally fails to elaborate on human causes within an institutional context for the changes he observes. Not recommended.?Charles K. Piehl, Mankato State Univ., MN

Like taking a leisurely walk with Sherlock Holmes
By Emily Smith
One of the most insightful books I have read on the topic of cultural landscapes. Stilgoe's expertise is on early American landscapes but he demonstrates clearly that he is as effective in assessing the modern landscape; writing is poetic but not euphemistic. He reveals the smallest details which tell volumes about our concepts of space and environment and the ways American landscapes have evolved over time, and why. I read this first as an assignment for a college course on American landscapes, and have reread it many times--I ordered a second copy as my first was heavily annotated, and am now reading it aloud to my seven-year-old son, who loves the descriptions and the fact that he can see so many of the examples on our own walks together. As a graduate student of archaeology, I have found many occasions to recommend this book to professional colleagues, but have also given it to family and friends because it is simply a pleasure to read. If you wish to develop a habit of close observation and a deeper understanding of both the natural and built environment, this book is an easy--and excellent--choice.

I' just reading it now and enjoying the premise of the book, allowing ourselves to really look and explore our daily walks and surroundings. It points out a different way of seeing it and ways of seeing the history and evolution of such common things as telephone oles and wires. Everything has a history and even romance that we can see if we know how to observe.

By Candie Kisses
I love stories that walk the fine line between love and hate. An attraction and a passion that is fiery and fierce. The battle of wills and the inevitable loss of control as they give into the attraction that drives them nearly mad. The change from facing off against each other to facing love and life together. The characters were up against all odds but, in this case, love really does conquer all. This is my second read through and I enjoyed it even more than the first...

However, I still would have liked...

More flashbacks from when they were partnered before. I think without more flashbacks to them fighting with one another and fighting their desire we missed out on some great foreplay. A tad more verbal sparring on the plane would have been fun too.

I also would have loved seeing them come out to their coworkers great surprise. It could have been quite a comedic opportunity.

I surely would have also enjoyed more of a reunion with Alex and her dad with her confessing she had burned pages of his book.

I would have loved a scene between Maggie and Paige somehow.

Overall, the book is enjoyable it just left me wanting more, in a good way.

Nice, easy read
By Jessy Lee
After reading BORN OUT OF WEDLOCK and loving it, I immediately sought out another work by this author. I immediately read ICE in one sitting. I liked the story and the fact that there is minimal angst. It was a quick, easy read. I would have liked a little more length to the story, but appreciated the epilogue. Without it, the ending would have been too abrupt.

Unexpected!
By Jen
At $3.99 this book is a bargain. I wasn't sure what to expect, but the blurb caught me and I am very pleased with the result.

Maggie and Alex are both Detective Inspectors in London, but don't let this fool you. This is novel has very little to do with their jobs and everything to do with their relationship. Immediately we are introduced to the tension and animosity between these two women. They are polar opposites in many respects. So once again don't expect anything do with police procedure.

This book reads very fast and is incredibly fun. I never once felt like it bogged down. From the moment the plane went down I was completely hooked and honestly I think my favorite part was the middle third of the book as these women fought for survival. Alex was especially amazing and I loved her stubborn drive to survive against all odds. I thought that the author handled the romance between the characters very well and their relationship developed realistically. There are a few "hot" scenes for those interested in such things. *wink*

I don't have many complaints. I think the editing was good and honestly only noticed a few mistakes. Nothing that I would call overly distracting though. I wasn't in love with the epilogue, but perhaps that is just me. For whatever reason it just didn't click. In fact would have been fine if it just ended at last chapter. But like I said it could just be me, I doubt most will have a problem with it.

I definitely recommend buying this one. I think it would have been worth it at $9.99 so at the price it is a fantastic bargain. Lastly the best thing I can say about this novel is that at about 1/3 of the way through I took a break to buy the author's second book. I was that impressed. Lyn Gardner is on my radar. 4/5

Not as simple as it seems ...
By Alex S
I really wanted to love this Cookbook. Unfortunately, it falls down in some critical areas.

1) Table of Contents is simply a long list of recipes. While they seem to be grouped together, there are no sections that help you to find what you are looking for. The index is by ingredient.

2) Since the index is by ingredient, you might expect to find larger groupings. Think fish. No, you have to know whether you want Monkfish, Mackerel, John Dory, Tuna, Seabream, Sea Bass, Sole, Skate, or Octopus ... Or some other seafood.

3) A key premise is no more than 6 ingredients and 4 steps. The problem is that each bullet point can have several steps. An example is the Duck Confit Parmentier:
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees
Bake the duck for 30 minutes
Peel potatoes
Peel sweet potatoes
Cook potatoes in lightly salted water for 30 minutes.
Drain, add butter, mash with fork, and season with salt and pepper
Bone the duck
Chop duck meat with its skin
Dress salad with walnut oil
Plate the mashed potatoes
Put duck on mashed potatoes, and salad on top of duck.
Easy to follow, but hardly 4 steps.

4) The same is true of the ingredients, "mixed salad greens" is one example, as is "pizza dough," but many of the recipes also include "serve with" or "serve over."

5) While there are many helpful recipes, there are also many recipes using ingredients I probably won't eat or don't know how to fix. A key example is the octopus - where the total prep is to cut the octopus into small pieces. If I ever do fix octopus, I will want better instructions. The same goes for the lobster - not sure if you kill it first or drop it into the boiling water (for one minute) live before you sauté it. I would rather see HOW to shuck an oyster than a photo that calls for 24 shucked oysters.

Expect some great recipes, but don't expect great organization or complete instructions.

By Bookworm
I think this is a great cookbook for moms (I have a 1-year-old and it's perfect for me). I especially love the few ingredients thing, since grocery shopping with a toddler is like grocery shopping with a time bomb! My favorite thing about this cookbook is that when I make these recipes it feels like COOKING. I know that some moms live and die for their crockpots, but throwing a bunch of stuff in a machine and turning it on just doesn't feel like cooking to me. I love the colors of fresh produce and the sizzle of cooking meat, and this cookbook satisfies that for me but in a way that is well-suited for the amount of time that I can devote to shopping and cooking. Everything that I have made is tasty, beautiful, and just feels like "real" adult food, which is a nice change of pace for me as a new mom!

Some cons: First, this book is a translation from French and some of the ingredients are things that might not be as easily accessed in the USA as they are in France. Stuff like merguez sausage or duck, for example, might not be behind your average American grocery store's meat counter. Also, one way that the cookbook keeps things simple is by using pre-made things like pizza dough, puff pastry, etc.; one recipe calls for pre-made gazpacho. These aren't necessarily things that you're going to find in good quality in the average grocery store. I live in a big city with amazing grocery stores and even I couldn't find the gazpacho. Second, this book doesn't go into detail about how to handle every step. I think it's expecting that people have a certain level of knowledge about cooking. So while it is "simple" in terms of ingredients and steps, I don't think it would necessarily be "simple" for someone who is new to cooking.

LOVE LOVE LOVE
By Sister-Mom
My husband bought this because he saw that Halle Berry was a fan and the "4 Steps or 6 Ingredients" thing. We are now entering a new phase in our life, retirement. It wasn't headline title of the book and the ease, it is the PORTION CONTROL, that made me happy!!! It is simple and total Portlon Control without even knowing you are doing Portion Control. if you follow the exact steps/ingredients, it is perfect for us. We are not the healthiest of folk and this book made gave me two ideas for this week and we did not over cook, over fix or over eat.
I cannot eat fish or seafood, so be aware that a solid third of this book is fish and seafood. That is something Im used to, so didnt sweat it. There are so many wonderful, easy things to do, it probably should have the "Dummy" word in there somewhere!
