I have read all the books on 80/20 by Richard and all of them have extended and helped my thinking in business and throughout my life in general. I would classify myself as lazy and intelligent (if I do say so myself). What this book allows you to see through the 10 styles of management is a blueprint for self-development. Loved it!

The ideas presented in this book are simple yet profound-just like the 80/20 principle itself. This is one of those books that leave you saying aha many times. I especially love the last 3 ways of becoming a great leader (no spoilers from me!). It's now part of my 20% re-reading list.

About the Author
Lorenzo Pradelli is medical director at AdRes Health Economics and Outcomes Research srl, Torino, Italy. He is in charge of the design, development, and management of pharmacoeconomic research, with particular reference to the medical and scientific aspects. He is member of the scientific board of Farmeconomia. He is editor-in-chief of the monographic journal Profili in Farmacoeconomia, and is the author or co-author of more than thirty articles on pharmacoeconomics, including original scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals, oral communications, and presentations at national and international congresses. Albert Wertheimer is a professor of pharmacy economics at the School of Pharmacy, Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where has been since 2000. Previously, he was a professor at the University of Minnesota, dean of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, director of Health Outcomes Management at Merck and Company, and a vice president at First Health, a pharmacy benefit management (PBM) firm.

About the Author
Dr. Nancy R. Mead is a Fellow and Principal Researcher at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI). She is also an Adjunct Professor of Software Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. She is currently involved in the study of security requirements engineering and the development of software assurance curricula. She served as director of software engineering education for the SEI from 1991 to 1994. Her research interests are in the areas of software security, software requirements engineering, and software architectures.

Prior to joining the SEI, Dr. Mead was a senior technical staff member at IBM Federal Systems, where she spent most of her career in the development and management of large real-time systems. She also worked in IBM’s software engineering technology area and managed IBM Federal Systems’ software engineering education department. She has developed and taught numerous courses on software engineering topics, both at universities and in professional education courses, and she has served on many advisory boards and committees.

Dr. Mead has authored more than 150 publications and invited presentations. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, Inc. (IEEE) and the IEEE Computer Society, and is a Distinguished Educator of the Association for Computing Machinery. She received the 2015 Distinguished Education Award from the IEEE Computer Society Technical Council on Software Engineering. The Nancy Mead Award for Excellence in Software Engineering Education is named for her and has been awarded since 2010, with Professor Mary Shaw as the first recipient.

Dr. Mead received her PhD in mathematics from the Polytechnic Institute of New York, and received a BA and an MS in mathematics from New York University
   
Dr. Carol C. Woody has been a senior member of the technical staff at the Software Engineering Institute since 2001. Currently she is the manager of the Cyber Security Engineering team, which focuses on building capabilities in defining, acquiring, developing, measuring, managing, and sustaining secure software for highly complex networked systems as well as systems of systems.

Dr. Woody leads engagements with industry and the federal government to improve the trustworthiness and reliability of the software products and capabilities we build, buy, implement, and use. She has helped organizations identify effective security risk management solutions, develop approaches to improve their ability to identify security and survivability requirements, and field software and systems with greater assurance. For example, she worked with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on defining security guidelines for its implementation of wireless emergency alerting so originators such as the National Weather Service and commercial mobile service providers such as Verizon and AT&T could ensure that the emergency alerts delivered to your cell phones are trustworthy. Her publications define capabilities for measuring, managing, and sustaining cyber security for highly complex networked systems and systems of systems. In addition, she has developed and delivered training to transition assurance capabilities to the current and future workforce.

Dr. Woody has held roles in consulting, strategic planning, and project management. She has successfully implemented technology solutions for banking, mining, clothing and tank manufacturing, court and land records management, financial management, human resources management, and social welfare administration, using such diverse capabilities as data mining, artificial intelligence, document image capture, and electronic workflow.

Dr. Woody is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, Inc. Computer Society and a senior member of the Association for Computing Machinery. She holds a BS in mathematics from the College of William & Mary, an MBA with distinction from The Babcock School at Wake Forest University, and a PhD in information systems from NOVA Southeastern University.

If there is any doubt why you should read this book, the authors Dr. Nancy Mead and Dr. Carol Woody make the case early in the 282-page book – “Our confidence in the engineering of software must be based on more than opinion.” In this one sentence the authors have essentially described the “as is” and the “to be” states of software and systems practice.
This book is written for the many practitioners and managers who know and understand that security must be engineered throughout the lifecycle, but need guidance on the changes to make to every activity across the system and software lifecycle for operational assurance. The book will also be valuable to the acquisition community interested in effective risk management of software assurance.
In Chapter 1, the authors begin with a definition of lifecycle assurance and provide a useful comparison of the software assurance definitions from various sources including DoD 5200.44, ISO/IEC standards 15408 and 27034 among others. They list seven principles “focused on addressing the challenges of acquiring, building, deploying, and sustaining systems to achieve a desired level of confidence for software assurance”. The rest of the chapters build on the principles and provide practical guidance for implementation.
Without minimizing the importance of other topics, I found the following the most useful. I recommend that busy practitioners and managers read at a minimum the following topics.

Cyber Security Engineering: a Definitive Work Now Available

PhDs Nancy Mead 1 and Carol Woody 2 have successfully lived up to their promise to help the industry achieve a method for practicing a cyber security engineering discipline. In this book entitled Cyber Security Engineering: A Practical Approach for Systems and Software Assurance (Addison-Wesley, 2017), the authors explain how to properly approach the Cyber Security topic, citing some of the real problems associated with a technical approach such as trying to ‘bolt on’ security after a technology project has been concluded.

Their stated goal was to provide a reference volume to employ when seeking to provide more effective cyber security practices. The authors point out how to use metrics by showing methods for measuring success in a cyber security world, along with portraying existing competencies in this field. In a relatively short eight chapters, the book explains how cyber security is used in the lifecycle of software development, while identifying ways to set priorities, consider risk, estimate confidence, acquire software and more. Discussion topics include gap analysis (the authors point out ‘good’ metrics as being “simple to explain and straightforward to determine, so the meaning can be widely understood”) as well as a number of optional methods to accomplish the difficult goal of securing complex information structures. They highlight the processes with a set of case studies in addition to listing current models provided by standards organizations such as the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Building Security in Maturity Model (BSIMM), American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and others.

The value in this book is its bringing together a variety of sources to explain the topic. Mead and Woody have provided key approaches to tackling not only the techniques of cyber security application in software engineering, but also have laid out approaches to managing risk in the context of complex system development projects. Probably the most effective list provided is the seven ‘principles’ they recommend, which include topics such as addressing risk, dependencies, governance, assurance and metrics.

This book should be read and understood by all large scale technology development projects staff (leaders, managers, technology experts, cyber security managers) simply because, as the authors point out, we now live in a world where cyber security is integral to our technology world. T oday’s software failures and risks to cyber security effectiveness are based upon failure to integrate the book’s principles from start to finish.

A Worthy Addition to the Beranbaum Baking Bible Canon

First of all, I am a seasoned amateur baker, not a professional pastry chef. And as much as I cook a lot -- and all kinds of things from low carb to vegan to Paleo and whatever traditional American cooking looks like -- my real love is to bake. And I especially love to bake completely from scratch where I need to buy some special, good quality ingredients and carve out a few hours or maybe over a couple days to savor the process.

For those of you, who like me, love to bake and aren't afraid to jump into detailed recipes that require some technique, then Rose Beranbaum's baking books are for you. "The Baking Bible" is the follow up to her last baking gem "Rose's Heavenly Cakes" (and her other timeless classics like "The Cake Bible" and "The Bread Bible "). The writing and the layout I loved with Heavenly Cakes is still intact and improved with the addition of specific helps called "GOLDEN RULES," "SPECIAL TIPS," and "TROUBLESHOOTING."

Some Heavenly Cakes recipes reappear in a new form such as the "White Chocolate Caramel Buttercream" -- a "White Chocolate Lemon Buttercream" redux that I guarantee you will love (the original version is my #1 all-time favorite cake frosting EVER). The Red Rose Cake is a new version of the previous Rose Red Velvet Cake in a new shape of a 3-D rose instead of the heart.

While I admit I am focused on cake so far, "The Baking Bible" includes Beranbaum's best to date pies, pastries, tarts, cookies, candy, bread and preserves. Although the title says "bible," this isn't intended to be an exhaustive collection of baking recipes, but rather updated winners and the best recipes and techniques one could expect from the writer of some of the best-loved and award-winning baking books we'll cook from for years to come. Do plan to spend some time reading through the book and planning some happy hours baking before you jump in. It is quite enjoyable to read through all the tips, instruction and see the possibilities before ever hitting the kitchen.

Can't Be Improved Upon

I might have died and gone to Heaven. Dorie Greenspan and Rose Levy Beranbaum both released baking books this fall. Forget Christmas. I have everything I need to be happy for the rest of the year.

The Baking Bible is a massive anthology of recipes to satisfy your baking needs. It runs the gamut from cakes to yeast breads and hits almost everything in between. This is an impressive collection of recipes that you will use for a long time. One of Rose's birthday cakes as well as her prosciutto loaf from her bread cookbook have been favorites in my home for over ten years now. The book will stay open to cook from, without the aid of a cookbook stand, from the first page to the last. The only downside to this (and it is my ONLY criticism of the book) is that this type of sewn binding is likely to cause you to have pages fall out later if you use the book often (and you will).

The chapters are divided as follows: cakes; pies, tarts and other pastries; cookies and candy; and breads and yeast pastries. Each chapter is further subdivided into specific categories. For example, the cakes chapter is subdivided into butter and oil cakes, cupcakes, sponge cakes, and cheesecakes. The book opens with Rose's Golden Rules of Baking. Then each individual chapter has a lengthy introduction that helps the cook troubleshoot common baking problems and includes more "golden rules" for being a successful cake baker, pie baker, etc. If you know Rose's recipes, you know she is a stickler for weights, measurements, and following directions. Each recipe begins with a chart that clearly delineates measurements for volume and weight. In many instances there will not be a listing for volume as weight (which is included in ounces as well as grams) is more accurate.

I am pleased to say that the book is as lovely as it is useful. There isn't a photograph for each recipe, but the photographs that are included are absolutely gorgeous. Most of the recipe is printed in black, but the headings are done in shades of burgundy that I didn't have any trouble reading. There are asides called "Highlights for Success" through many of the recipes that give you additional information to make your recipe a smash hit. I also add that the index is also problem free. It was done with a lot of thought in order to maximize usefulness.

I would like to recommend this book to everyone, and for the most part, I do. I recommend to beginners with caution. I was a young bride with no cooking experience when I purchased The Cake Bible and The Bread Bible. I had no trouble because the author is so specific in her directions. However, novices should be able to follow multiple, detailed steps and use their five senses plus be able to make judgment calls regarding a recipe. If you are a moderate level or advanced baker, you will be pleased with this newest addition to the Beranbaum library and probably won't be able to put the book down for more than five minutes at the time.

The ingredients and basic recipes section at the end of the book will demystify basics such as making chocolate curls, clarifying butter, and making ganache and whipped cream as well as lending Rose's personal insights on what ingredients to buy. I feel that this book is the home equivalent of a culinary school course in baking. You will love the appendix that lists quick and easy recipes as well as recipes that are flourless, mostly flourless, as well as lactose free. If you have egg issues, the author lists which recipes include only yolks or whites. She bends over backwards to make this book easy to use!

But enough of my detailed book tour, you want to hear about recipes! I took a change of pace from the usual cakes and loaves for my initial foray into this impressive book and went with the French toast. It was magnificent, so good that I felt it didn't even need the additional suggested décor of powdered sugar or maple syrup.

Don't hesitate to add this book to your library. If you are new to Rose Levy Beranbaum, know that if you follow her directions to the letter you will have baked goods that taste as though they couldn't possibly be made by human hands. The precise directions are absolutely worth it!

Flawless recipes, perfectly written and explained

The recipes here are flawless, and Rose makes sure of it by including the measurements by weight and volume. Most of these recipes are projects, the kind of fun, day-long adventures you might devote a Saturday to. This is definitely not a book for quick recipes you can whip up on a whim, and almost every main recipe comprises multiple sub-recipes (the cake layers, the jam filling, the ganache, the buttercream the ganache is whipped into, the decoration, etc). However, the end result is outrageously good. I made her babka with an almond-cream cheese and apricot jam filling, and I think I may have actually exclaimed "Oh my god" in between chews. The apple and sour cream coffee cake is fabulous as well. The pictures are beautiful, but they don't necessarily accompany every recipe.

If you're someone who already loves to bake, this is a wonderful book to add to your collection, and the recipes are worth the time and effort! If you're a novice baker or someone disinterested in more complicated recipes, this may not be the best book for you.

A magnificent history of the Grumman F-14 "Tomcat"

When Grumman's Bob Kress designed the F-14 he created a legend. This book describes it from genesis to today, covering every significant development and deployment. The book is remarkable not only because of the authoritative detail but because Gillcrist is so candid. He's sometimes biased and doesn't mind admitting it--but he always back up a controversial opinion with facts. This book is highly recommended for anyone interested in air warfare and naval aviation. The pictures are terrific, though only 'blanket' credited when unofficial. But you'll see the great work of 'Heater' Heatley--nuff said!

One of the best if not the best...

...written histories of the F-14 Tomcat. You can tell from the narration that the author was intimately familiar with the aircraft and knew the aircraft well, rather than coming across as some book-learned egghead that still refers to the Tomcat's mission as 'Fleet Air Defense'. Fleet Air Defense is Maritime Air Superiority.
Anyways, great book and very informative. The best account yet of the F-14/F-15 flyoff for the Shah.

A love poem to the F-14.

This is a very interesting read no matter what your view on the F-14. Written by a retired admiral who was involved with the F-14 program from the beginning, the book walks you through the development, deployment and the improvement programs and the various politics of the program up to 1994 (the publishing date). The second half of the book is mostly about saving the F-14 program and it is therefore mostly hoopla on the author's particular position on the matter. Personally I did bot agree with the author's position and for the matter neither did the US Navy. To the author's credit he acknowledges that his position was different than the powers that be, however his particular bias does taint the book somewhat. Personally as much as I like the F-14 it is tremendously overrated aircraft and I feel that the Navy's retirement of it in favour of the Super Hornet was a good move. The problem wjth the author's bias is that you do not get an effective evaluation of the aircraft i feel. The book doesn't spend much time placing the F-14 in comparison to it's rivals or even gives much technical information but rather draws an overall narrative of the F-14s life so bear that in mind when purchasing. Also if you are buying this for the purpose of making models (as I am) then there the photography in this book is of limited benefit, and the information is not detailed enough to warrant a purchase. Nevertheless an interesting read.

About the Author

Serope Kalpakjian taught and conducted research at the Illinois Institute of Technology for 38 years prior to his retirement in 2001 as professor emeritus of mechanical and materials engineering. After graduating from Robert College (high honors), Harvard University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he joined Cincinnati Milacron, where he was a research supervisor in advanced metal-forming processes. He is the author of numerous technical papers and several articles in handbooks and encyclopedias and has edited various conference proceedings. In addition, Professor Kalpakjian has served on the editorial bards of several journals and the Encyclopedia Americana and is the coauthor of Lubricants and Lubrication in Metalworking Operations. Both first editions of his textbooks, Manufacturing Processes for Engineering Materials and Manufacturing Engineering and Technology, have received the M. Eugene Merchant Manufacturing Textbook Award. He is a Life Fellow of the ASME, Fellow of the SME, Fellow and Life Member of ASM International, emeritus member of CIRP (International Institution for Production Engineering Research), and a founding member and past president of NAMRI/SME.

Among the awards Professor Kalpakjian has received are the Forging Industry Educational and Research Foundation Best Paper Award (1966), an Excellence in Teaching Award from IIT (1970), the Centennial Medallion from the ASME (1980), the International Education Award from the SME (1989), a Person of the Millennium Award from IIT (1999), and the Albert Easton White Distinguished Teacher Award from ASM International (2000). SME named the Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award after Professor Kalpakjian for the year 2002.

Steven R. Schmid is an associate professor with the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, University of Notre Dame, where he teaches and performs research in the general areas of manufacturing, machine design, and tribology. As the director of the Manufacturing Tribology Laboratory at the university, he oversees industry- and government-funded research on a variety of manufacturing topics, including tribological issues in rolling, forging and sheet-metal forming, polymer processing, medical-device design and manufacture, and nanomechanics.

He received the B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology (with honors) and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, both in mechanical engineering, from Northwestern University. He has received numerous awards, including the John T Parsons Award from the SME (2000), the Newkirk Award from the ASME (2000), and the Kaneb Center Teaching Award (2000). He is the recipient of a National Science Foundation CAREERS Award (1996) and an ALCOA Foundation Award (1994). Dr. Schmid is the author of over 50 technical papers; has edited three conference proceedings; has coauthored two books, Fundamentals o f Machine Elements and Manufacturing Engineering and Tecbnology; and has contributed two chapters to the CRC Handbook of Modern Tribology. He serves on the Tribology Division Executive Committee of the ASME, is an associate editor of the Journal o f Manufacturing Science and Engineering, and is a registered professional engineer and certified manufacturing engineer.

It can't be helped...

While this book is a fantastic overview of all things materials and their many, many, many different methods of processing, the text is beyond dry when it comes to actual readability. A few weeks could have been set aside in the writing process to make the text far less formulaic and repetitive than it is currently, but that effort was obviously not made.

However, its impossible to fault a textbook for being dry, and that's the only reason the single star was docked. The descriptions of the manufacturing processes and their applications, on the other hand, were detailed and helpful, and the book is recommended in that regard.

Sweet deal

The book did not go in as much detail as my professor did, but that really is not that big of a problem. I plan on keeping this book since it is relatively cheap (cost-wise) and has a ton of useful information in it. I would definitely recommend this book as a shelf reference book (not to carry around since it is extremely heavy). Great book....I highly recommend picking it up if you are a materials scientist/engineer or have any overlapping field of study that concerns processing at all (every physical product requires processing).

AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME

Being a junior mechanical engineering student, this text is whats used for the lecture. I use this textbook a lot and it is very helpful: all of the processes are well explained, why they should/should not be used in situations. Also this book makes a good effort to take the raw material and mix with facts beyond just when to use a process to get you actually interested in manufacturing. For example how investment casting (aka lost wax process) allowed people to create intricate statues.

Every week a quiz was given and studying for an hour with the book an notes helped me ace it every time.

**This semester I had expected that manufacturing would be the driest class; in fact this is one of the classes that I most enjoyed. I'm sure it was partly due because of my professor but this book certainly didn't hurt.

Please respect nursing students and truly update this outdated, difficult to work with book

Poorly written in terms of organization. When you are assigned this textbook you'll encounter multiple chapters covering the same subject and still with not enough detail. My classmates and I would flip through pages, then flip back to another chapter, then find ourselves looking at another section. Come exam time our heads were always in a twist trying to study and refer to pages with each other. Navigation while looking for subjects is horrible! For example, try looking up cord compression, it's not in the index. This is something that is so important and it's not even given respect in the index. It feels like this book was rushed to print, and even though many editions have been printed since the first none of the issues or material that needs updated were ever revised. What's frustrating is that this is also an updated edition with photos that are ancient. Very disappointing learning experience with this book.

Awful OB/Maternity Nursing Text

This book is full of glaring inaccuracies, including the statement, I kid you not, "Medical errors are the leading cause of death in the United States..." Wow. Just wow.
Worst of all, even though it is an 8th edition and revised-print released in 2014, there is almost no cited information earlier than 2009, with most of the cited material being 2007 and earlier.
It is incredibly irresponsible for an author and publisher to release "new" editions without correcting errors or including actually new information.
I was required to get this book by my program, but I will be recommending my professor and program directors remove it from the OB course and pick a different book.

Numerous blatant errors, outdated info, unnecessarily wordy as if the author was trying to reach a specific word count...not recommended.
