This audio version of the third book in the Fish series uses as its example the work at one ward of a large suburban hospital. Rhonda, the supervisor, had been promoted, and her mentor, whom she succeeded, had been an ardent follower of the Fish program. Rhonda believed her staff was paying attention to the patients and were providing a level of service far beyond that at other facilities. However, after some time, she began to notice staffers were sloughing off and seemed not to be providing the absolute best care to the patients. The problem? Keeping the Fish principles fresh and new was difficult. After a visit to a successful sushi restaurant, Rhonda regained her enthusiasm for the program and, with the help of the sushi chef, was able to inspire her staff. In fact, her work was so effective, her staff was able to take over for Rhonda after she suffered a family tragedy. There's something charming about the Fish program, which counsels, "Find it, live it and coach it" ("it" is each employee's vision). The notion that individual workers can have a vision for their workplace and their place within a large organization is indeed empowering. And Rhonda's story offers insights into both personal and professional worlds. However, the simple message is rendered even more unsophisticated by the artificial voices on this audio. There's a kind of squeaky, schoolmarm voice for the older nurse who comes onto the ward, and the intonations used for the various nurses are similar and somewhat grating. Still, in spite of these flaws, the story and the business lessons within it are worth hearing.

Decent but not as good as the original

After reading about this book I was excited by the opportunity to get some more insight into the "Fish!" world, and I was especially interested in learning about `how to make change stick'. I liked how the book was another "fable" type story, and thought that this might make another good Book Club selection for our company book club.

Well, I read the book, and although I thought it had some merit, it was not nearly as easily accessible and distillable to the same audiences as the first "Fish!" book was. I was still glad I bought the book, and I did get something out of it, but I had real trouble imagining trying to pass this message on to others in our company.

I will say this, though. One message that came out of this book and that hit me loud and clear was that for "change" to stick, the meaning of the change has to be personalized to each individual, and it has to mean something to them, because once all the bells and whistles of the program are gone, and the initial excitement dies down, it will be impossible to keep a culture change program going unless others can relate to it personally and continue to buy into it on a day to day basis.

So, I thought THAT message was valuable and worth buying the book for, but I don't think I will be passing this out at our next book club. It was just not a book that was otherwise easily understandable to a much wider audience.

However, if you haven't read the original "Fish!" book yet, I HIGHLY recommend it...

Stuart McAleese has over 15 years of professional experience of oil and gas industry operations gained worldwide. He gained his initial oil industry experience while employed with major oil industry service companies. He also worked as a staff Petroleum and Reservoir Engineer with operating oil companies and has extensive experience in the planning and supervision of wellsite operations including testing, well services and completions; he held the post of Senior and Chief Petroleum Engineer for various oil companies in the UK and overseas. In addition to his engineering skills, Stuart McAleese has significant management experience in operations and in the board room. His commercial skills have been brought to bear in licence negotiations with Oil and Gas Ministers and he has undertaken due diligence work for the stock market. He is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and previously served on the Board of Directors of the SPE, London Section. He graduated in 1984 with an honours degree in Applied Physics from the University of Strathclyde, Scotland. Currently he is an independent consultant for Esprit Petroleum Technology Ltd.

I believe this book fills a need that engineers always had. It explains in a very clear way how to do procedures in field operations and how to resolve different situations that can appear in oil and gas well testing... I really recommend it to the oil industry.

I was informed that there was no writing, but there was actually quiet a lot of writing and underling in this. Which is no big deal normally but when erasing with a normal eraser the print also fades a bit.

You gotta love Bertha. I do!....

Such a charming story for Bertha whose heart is soft, her personality is sweet and her talents in the kitchen are amazing. She wants to find the love of her life, yet she is surrounded with a house full of siblings. Her brothers are looking for wives and her sisters are busy with many beaus. This romantic life in her parents home leaves shy Bertha on the sidelines watching others have fun. Bertha doesn't have the 18 inch waist that is preferred, so she hides when visitors arrive. Where is her future and who can she find that will accept her as she is. She travels to Montana to accept a job as cook and manager of a Boarding House. She quite literally falls out of the wagon and lands in the arms of Howie Brungar, the handyman. While she is embarrassed to near tears, Howie loves every moment he holds this wonderful woman he just met. We fans asked this author to give us a book about Bertha and it is a grand story. I enjoyed every moment of this book.

Grand Finale to a Great Series!

I was able to get through this book quickly, because I was entertained and didn't put it down!

This was a great finale to the Mail-Order Brides of the West series! Bertha, the chef and baker extraordinaire, is the heroine this time. She remains without a match as Mrs. Seymour decides to close down the agency and finds herself back home with her lovely sisters grabbing all the attention of suitors.

I really enjoyed this installment, mainly because Bertha takes even greater risks than the other brides: She leaves home and goes to Montana without a husband waiting for her & she accepts a job offer from none other than Prudence, the woman who tormented her at the agency.

It was nice to see the other brides make an appearance here, but I especially liked witnessing a new side of Prudence. Beauty is on the inside, and Bertha is a great example of this.

I won't give away the rest, but I think readers of this series and of Ms. Holland's Montana Sky books will not be disappointed.

Debra has written another wonderful and awesome story for the Mail Order Brides of the West series.

Bertha is another great Mail Order Bride story in Montana by Debra Holland. Her Montana Sky series has another part with her Mail Order Brides of the West. Bertha is the last bride to leave the bridal agency and didn't have a match. Her nemesis Prudence who was the second to last to leave went to Morgan's Crossing and became the town owner's bride. Prudence was always very mean to Bertha but one day Bertha gets a letter from Prudence with an offer to come to Morgan's Crossing to be the cook and run the boarding house there.
This story is amazing at how things turn out and not at all what Bertha expected to find when she got there. You have to read her story as it has new chances, redemption , new friends and old friends and of course love.
This is another must read by Debra Holland and if you haven't read any of the Montana Sky stories or the Mail Order Brides of the west, you should start there to know what was going on.
Thank you Debra Holland for another awesome story.

This book is worth your time if you are interested in the study of improving the mind with technology. At some points it started to come off as an infomercial but the author brought the story back by showing real life examples of people's experiences with neurological training.

Very well written and well worth reading. While the book primarily focuses on the mental impact on physical performance in athletes, I wonder how many of the techniques covered in the book could be applied to other professions. If This Stuff (as the author refers to the techniques) can improve performance on the field, ring, court, etc., could it not improve performance in other vocations as well? Perhaps this is just the tip of the iceberg. It will be interesting to see where this technology advances in the next 5-10 years. Perhaps the author will write a sequel.
