This book introduces and explains the SIOP ® (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol) Model, a comprehensive, coherent, research-validated model of sheltered instruction, now implemented in districts throughout all 50 states and in dozens of countries. The SIOP® Model, developed by the authors over 15 years ago, offers teachers a comprehensive, well-articulated model of instruction for planning and implementing lessons that helps educators a) provide English learners and other students with access to grade-level content standards, b) develop the students’ academic English skills, and c) prepare students to be college and career ready. Jana Echevarría is a Professor Emerita at California State University, Long Beach. She has taught in elementary, middle, and high schools in general education, special education, ESL, and bilingual programs. She has lived in Taiwan, Spain and Mexico. An internationally known expert on second language learners, Dr. Echevarría is a Fulbright Specialist. Her research and publications focus on effective instruction for English learners, including those with learning disabilities. Currently, she is Co-Principal Investigator with the Center for Research on the Educational Achievement and Teaching of English Language Learners (CREATE) funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Institute of Education Sciences (IES). In 2005, Dr. Echevarría was selected as Outstanding Professor at CSULB.

 

MaryEllen Vogt, Ed.D., is a Professor Emerita of Education at California State University, Long Beach.  Dr. Vogt has been a classroom teacher, reading specialist, special education specialist, curriculum coordinator, and university teacher educator. She received her doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley, and is a co-author of fifteen books, including Reading Specialists and Literacy Coaches in the Real World (3rd ed., 2011) and the SIOP® book series. Her research interests include improving comprehension in the content areas, teacher change and development, and content literacy and language acquisition for English learners. She was inducted into the California Reading Hall of Fame, received her university’s Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award, and served as President of the International Reading Association in 2004—2005.

 

Deborah J. Short is a professional development consultant and a senior research associate at the Center for Applied Linguistics in Washington, DC. She co-developed the SIOP® Model for sheltered instruction and has directed national research studies on English language learners funded by the Carnegie Corporation, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the U.S. Dept. of Education. She chaired an expert panel on adolescent ELL literacy that produced a policy report. As the director of Academic Language Research & Training, Dr. Short provides professional development on sheltered instruction and academic literacy around the U.S. and abroad. She has numerous publications, including the SIOP® book series and five ESL textbook series for National Geographic/Hampton-Brown. She has taught English as a second/foreign language in New York, California, Virginia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Must Have Text

Jana J. Echevarria does a better job at breaking down the SIOP Model than any other book I've ever read in regards to SIOP. I purchased this book as a textbook for my Teaching English as a Second Language Graduate Class. Most textbooks contain some, but not all useful information about a subject. After taking my class and reading this book, I have no lingering questions about the details of the SIOP Model, the practicality of the SIOP Model, or the ways of the SIOP Model's operation. If you are an educator who works with English Language Learners at any level, this book is a must have book. I purchased the book for half the cost of my college campus's book price from the seller on Amazon. Making Content Comprehensible for English Learners arrived on my door step just three days after the order was made. I ordered this book as a brand new book and still got a heck of a bargain from Amazon. I would recommend the book, the seller, and Amazon to any and all people who read any type of books.

The kindle version is nothing but a pdf

Do not buy the kindle version, it is a PDF. It does not scale correctly and is not readable on a kindle. In fact, the kindle version is a rip off. Amazon should be ashamed for taking money for this crap.

A helpful and user friendly resource

I bought this book for a class, but it was so easy to use and helpful that I chose to keep it after the class ended. The main thing I really learned from this book was the need for having language objectives along with content objectives so that students know what is expected. The lesson plans are helpful, and the authors really make this book user friendly. I used this book with my English language learners.

Best Grammar ever. If you are foreign and you want to learn English easily this is a book for you. I've try many different Grammar Book but Betty Azar knows how to teach and make English Grammar easy to us who are learning English as Second Language. You won't regret to buy this book.

Great Practice

This text was actually chosen by a second year student in my ESL class. I use a variety of texts with students, as well as a great deal of oral language exercises and discussion using pictures, classroom demonstrations, and so on. One thing I really like about this text are the oral practice exercises in each section. I think a student who has an English speaking friend, tutor, or teacher to practice these with him, check over completed practice, and to explain any lesson that the student questions would GREATLY benefit from this book. Teachers would find plenty of exercises to pull out and use to meet specific classroom practice needs. Students who expect to teach themselves to SPEAK English thru this--or any other text--will be disappointed. Reading and writing develop language skills, but we learn to speak by listening and speaking.

Balling on a budget

For the amount I saved on this book, the pages could have been made of wax paper and I would have been fine with it. The book came in great condition, no torn or missing pages, and the book matched up well with the u.s edition. My only complaint is that the sections that read code are very light and hard to see as the book comes in black and white, and I'm assuming those sections were originally printed in a bright color. Overall, of you're a college student with no money and somewhat decent grasp on MATLAB, I highly recommend this edition.

No step by step instructions?

This book is 100% useless and frustrating unless you 1) only need to be able to do the methods on matlab, not by hand or 2) have a teacher that actually teaches the concepts in class.
Rather than tell you step-by-step how to solve a problem using the method described, they give you exactly one crappy, over complicated example that requires an in depth knowledge of physics before you can even set out to learn what they're trying to teach you. You then have to infer how to use the method given the example.
For instance, I am sitting here trying to use eigenvalues to solve for the amplitude of some springs and masses without having the foggiest idea how they got the equation for the springs in the example or how to modify it to fit the more complex homework system, let alone how to then transform it into eigenvalues given the exactly 1-page example on how to use them with no further explanation of why they were doing what they were doing it.
Everyone in my class routinely complains about the book, and the topics covered are so random and niche that it's hard to google them when you need further clarification. It's almost like it's trying to teach linear algebra without telling you that's what it's doing. With other useless stuff thrown in.
But hey, If you want to know how to find the square root of a number or the inverse of a system of linear equations by hand and don't have access to a graphing calculator or the internet, this book will teach you how with minimal tears and only a few thrown objects.

Penzler Pick, April 2000: It is sometimes easy to trace a literary genre to its source, and James M. Cain's first novel, The Postman Always Rings Twice, is the noir novel that paved the way for all the noir fiction that followed. The famous film starring Lana Turner and John Garfield is notoriously dark, but the novel is even more full of despair and devoid of hope. It is a short book--little more than a novella--but its searing characterization and depiction of tawdry greed and lust is branded into every reader's memory.

Frank Chambers, a drifter, is dropped from the back of a truck at a rundown rural diner. When he spots Cora, the owner's wife, he instantly decides to stay. The sexy young woman, married to Nick, a violent and thuggish boor, is equally attracted to the younger man and sees him as her way out of her hopeless, boring life. They begin a clandestine affair and plot to kill Nick, beginning their own journey toward destruction.

Horace McCoy, David Goodis, Jim Thompson, and the other notable noir writers never achieved Cain's spare brilliance. Virtually all of his major works have been filmed, though several Hollywood studios refused to make the films, directors refused to be involved, and actors turned down roles because of their repugnance at the lack of morality inherent in all Cain's characters. Reading him may not be fit for a Sunday school class, but once you begin you will be unable to resist continuing, like picking at a painful scab or watching a tarantula inside a glass dome. --Otto Penzler

A Fine Example Vintage Hard Boiled "Noir" Style

This is an enjoyable, relatively short, novel. As is the case with most short novels, probably by necessity in a short novel, character development is kept to a minimum. The novel is also a time piece. The traffic and roads in the area around Los Angeles described here are very different from today. I have found this novel on at least one list of the supposed "100 greatest novels". That, of course, is completely a matter of taste. However to me, I am quite certain I have read 100 novels better than this.

By coincidence, I had just finished a Mickey Spillane novel, and I find the writing by James M. Cain to be of a much more developed and sophisticated nature. I think if one studies the biographies of these two authors, one can correlate the comparative writing styles to their backgrounds.

Another interesting comparison (At least to me!) can be made between a short novel like this and a longer novel such as The Adventures of Augie March by Saul Bellow. In both novels, there is a side story wherein the protagonist embarks on a somewhat bizarre misadventure to Mexico with an unusual female. If one wishes, one may note the differences in length, detail and style of these two interludes.

There is some allusions to what I might refer to as "rough sex" that surprised me. I cannot recall seeing that in American popular novels composed prior to this work. I do not know if this novel is considered "ground breaking" on that front or not. It did catch me by surprise.

As with the case of many American novels of this time period, there is quite a bit of negative ethnic references. There are negative allusions to people of Greek heritage and some negative terminology about Italian Americans. As I stated above this is common in American novels of this period. I only mention it in case it matters to a potential reader unfamiliar with this work or this literary period.

NO SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW. Nice, quick read, but so-so character engagement.

I give this just three stars because even though, yes, I expected it to be "pulpy", it's so pulpy it's a tad shallow. No real character development and very much just "this is what happened to these people". Now, what happens is interesting and kept my attention, but I didn't at all care WHO it was happening to because Cain never dives deeply enough into who the characters are to make you care about them specifically (versus just the situation, more generally). In other words, you're involved in the characters' stories not for the characters and who they are, but for what they encounter. Also, for a fairly slim novel, it took me kind of a while (about a week) to read it. Whenever I put it down, I wasn't dying to pick it back up.

The book I have doesn't look like the one pictured, with the man and woman hugging on the cover. Mine shows a picture of the TITLE SCREEN from the 1946 movie. It's very cool. The design of the book, quality of the texture of the cover, and the inside formatting are fantastic. I really like that I own this book and have it on my shelf. If you enjoy classic films and hope to read and collect books published in the first half of the 20th century that were later made into classic films, you'll like owning this book.

Finally, NO SPOILERS, but the Lana Turner/John Garfield movie (1946) was actually better than the book, but I won't say how or why because I don't want to spoil anything.

YOU MADE THE BED, YOU CAN LIE IN IT!

This book is a riveting classic of duplicity, love found, lost, and then found again, even eighty years after its first publication date. It has moments of gut wrenching suspense interspersed with examples of heartless cruelty, and innocent, young, sweet love. The writing is taut, sufficiently descriptive and perhaps most surprisingly, the story is still relevant today.

The best laid plans of mice and men can be lain flat by the simplest of things and early in the book, a cat of all things spoils the party for our two duplicitous love birds.

i find it hard to believe that two people who can be so cruel and heartless can ever amount to anything and if fate or karma has a say in the way things turn out for any of us in this world, then young Cora and the tramp Frank Chambers don't gave much to look forward to. And they won't get any sympathy from me.

This book is a classic of the genre. Those with any interest in crime, suspense, noir, or even the odd love story should get something from reading this delightful work of literature. Full marks for this one.

Always fresh and interesting

I've read so many Osho books and have never given any of them less than 5 stars. Amazing that he was so prolific and almost never repeats himself. Yes, the theme is always in line, but the content stays fresh and interesting and I always get something new from him. Very insightful in this book is the 7 year phases of the human life cycle, and what happens when we stuck or off track. Recommended!

Not a big fan

Not a horrifying overview of materials engineering, but it doesn't read well and feels like an advertisement for CES (which is a great piece of software by the way, but it still doesn't read well)

Terrible, pointless book.

It is a shame that such a truly wonderful mind (the well respected Dr. Ashby) would produce such a pointless, miserable book. The book is lack-luster, at best, and provides little more than common-sense knowledge.

Chapters are nothing more than a long string of either pointless or convoluted information about the field of materials science and far too many cheeky British jokes/puns that are absolutely insulting in a college-level book (from my prospective: the author seems to be poking fun at the reader's supposed "sub-sophomoric" knowledge of his field).

If possible, do not buy this book! If your class mandates purchasing this book consider switching classes or taking the required class at another university - you will save yourself a fair amount of time and money.

Foundation Results Over Five Months

I purchased the Foundation book to see if I could relieve my back pain where other methods hadn’t worked. Some background. I'm 52, active, and am in relatively good shape. (I also like long walks on the beach and drinking red wine. Oops, wrong web site.) Two years ago almost overnight I began having chronic lower back pain, which means I was in pain or discomfort 24/7. For over a year I tried cortisone shots, working with a massage therapist and sports chiropractor, going to 3 different medical doctors, etc. Nothing helped the problem. An MRI showed I'd degenerative discs. In total I spent several thousand dollars trying to recover including a new mattress, desk chair for posture, and other devices and gizmos. The upshot is this: I didn't have any success in relieving my lower back pain using non-exercise methods. (Although I did go to physical therapy, it was a huge disappointment. The exercises were so tame I didn't really get any benefit.)

Several months ago I began researching exercises to cure back pain and came across Foundation. I did a fair amount of research on it including reading 80% of the Amazon reviews on the book. I'm going to repeat several things from those other reviews. The most important point is to make sure to watch online videos of Dr. Eric Goodman showing the Foundation exercises. You will get a much better idea of correct form. The video I found especially helpful was of Dr. Goodman showing Dr. Mercola how to do the basic exercises. One of the negatives of the book is it doesn't show alternative techniques if you're experiencing back pain for a particular exercise. The videos will occasionally show these alternates.
The book takes you through a six week training regimen. The first two weeks introduces the basic exercises of Foundation and concentrates on fixing acute pain (reoccurring pain); the second two weeks is to fix chronic pain (pain all the time, which is what I have); and the last two weeks on exercises to strengthen the core and prevent future back pain. The basic idea of Foundation I believe is to both strengthen the back and stretch different muscle groups.

I kept a diary of my progress and thought it might benefit people to know my results over time. On a side note, I should mention I was very dedicated to the program and went beyond what was suggested. I would do the Foundation workouts between 4 to 6 times a week and would hold the poses 30 seconds instead of the 15 to 20 as they state in the book. (After six weeks I started alternating Foundation every other day with core exercises, which mainly consisted of planks.)

For the first three days of starting Foundation I concentrated on making sure I was doing the exercises with the proper form. That meant before each exercise I'd study what it said in the book, watch Youtube videos, and then perform the exercise. It took me about a week to get comfortable with the positions. Are the exercises easy to perform? I found them initially uncomfortable because they are poses I hadn't done before. You will definitely work up a sweat holding the positions. I don't think you need to be an athlete, but if you've never worked out, you might not like Foundation at first. Stick with it though. After only a little time you'll get comfortable with the exercises and the results are worth it.

Even after two weeks, I still wasn't convinced I was making progress. I felt less stiff in my lower back but my pain level remained the same. It wasn't until the start of the third week that I really could tell that my back pain was slightly better. It wasn't much of an improvement but an improvement nonetheless.

Before Foundation if I did yard work for 15 minutes, this translated into several days of a fairly bad back pain. By the fifth week of Foundation I could work in the yard 15 minutes and only have bad back pain the next day. This might sound minor or not worth using Foundation to some people, but to me it was a huge improvement. It also let me know that I was making significant progress using Foundation.

By the fourth month I felt like I'd reached a plateau and wasn't noticing any more improvement. However, I was really doing well as compared to before I started doing Foundation. Now I'd wake up in the morning with the usual amount of back pain but by lunch feel fairly good. By evening I wouldn't really feel any back pain. This still wasn't where I wanted to be because I was looking for more dramatic improvement (to reset the clock to the months before my back pain even began).

It was during this fourth month I decided to take a yoga class. I experienced slight back pain during the class, but when I woke up the next day I felt really good. I started incorporating yoga into my Foundation workouts and the results have been amazing. A lot of mornings I wake up without back any pain. This is a novelty to me. Morning back pain has been a part of my life for almost two years.

I think yoga and Foundation are complimentary. I would suggest doing what I did: start with Foundation and if that doesn’t fix your problem, consider adding yoga to your routines. I don't think I could've even done yoga before I started Foundation. It would've been too painful, and I suspect I might've injured myself. Foundation gave me the basis to move on to yoga.

Two final notes: First, if you're considering either the DVD or the book on Foundation, definitely get the book. Maybe get the DVD later for additional exercises, but from a beginners standpoint the book is much better. I can't stress this enough. Second, consider adding the bird dog exercise into your routine with progressively higher ankle weights. The book The Multifidus Back Pain Solution book by Jim Johnson makes a strong case that this exercise can be one of the best to fix lower back pain.

To conclude, I highly recommend Foundation to anybody experiencing lower back pain.

Tried so many things, but this book worked

I've had lower back pain for the last ten years, since I was 23 or so and left the student life to join the corporate world... it seems like I was always either dealing with a pulled back or recovering from a pulled back. Sometimes it was manageable, and sometimes I could barely get up in the morning. I'm not an old guy, and with two young kids this was becoming a serious impediment to me just being able to live and enjoy my life. Every time I'd start a fitness routine, it'd end in me injuring my back several weeks later.

I tried everything, and spent thousands of dollars. I saw my doctor, received massage therapy for years, chiropractor, acupuncture, and even did yoga and pilates. They all seemed to offer some degree of pain relief and maybe I'd go a couple months without pulling my back. But it'd always get injured again.

Recently, after yet another pulled back, out of desperation I went searching for a book and came across this one.

I waited 6 months before writing this review, so I could give a good testimonial. And what a great 6 months it has been! I started doing the exercises in this book while in the midst of back pain, and it slowly went away, so far never to return.

All the other "treatments" I received addressed a variety of things... posture, flexibility, stiffness, alignment, whatever. But the root cause remained: my back muscles, (or posterior chain as the book refers to it as) were simply weak. No amount of other treatments would help, as my weak back was just so easy to injure.

It took about three weeks of following the program in the book before I started noticing improvement. After 6 weeks, the improvement was very substantial. Now, it's an amazing and enjoyable improvement... I don't even think about my posture any more, as with a strong posterior chain, a good posture is just what comes naturally. I still do the exercises every 2 to 3 days... they're very easy to stick to. I recently went about 8 days without doing them (while on vacation) and it was no problem.

Whenever anyone tells me that they're suffering from lower back pain like I had, I tell them about this book. It's simple, and it worked. 5 stars is not enough.

Foundation exercises are restoring my life

Up until Memorial Day this year, I was playing soccer and refereeing at age 60. But then I torqued my back doing yardwork. I didn't have sciatica, but I could no longer run, bend over, get out of bed, and I could barely use the toilet in the morning. I tried celebrex, mobic, PT, chiro, yoga, massage, and personal training to change how I walked/ran. My pain level remained at around a 7. I finally got an MRI, which indicated advanced disk degeneration and a small disk bulge. Then I read that San Jose Earthquakes player Ramiro Corrales had spinal cortisone shots and followed the Foundation exercises throughout the season.

So 6 weeks ago, I started the exercises. My back was so weak, and I had to go so slowly, that one set of the basic 5 exercises took me 45 minutes. I could only hold the poses for a few seconds each. I had some immediate pain relief that first day, so I kept at it, building up to 20" poses. Each day my back improved. After 2 weeks, I realized I was supposed to do 3 sets of the basic exercises, so I increased my workout. Then I moved to the intermediate exercises, and now I am doing the advanced workout. My back is now strong enough, that if I trip, or if someone bumps into me or vice versa, I no longer get stabbing pain running up my spine. My pain dropped to a 3-4. I am pretty sure that the Foundation exercises opened my spinal joints and allowed blood into the area to help reduce the inflammation. I have also found that I need to do them almost every day.

Do you need to be an athlete to do these exercises? No, but you need to develop an athlete's resolve to keep at them. Remember, I was so weak I could barely do them in the beginning, so I had fallen out of an athletic state and had even become pre-diabetic.

Am I cured? No. Can I go back to soccer yet? No. Yesterday I got spinal cortisone shots in the hopes that they will eliminate the remaining inflammation in my facet joints. I also read Esther Gokhale's book and am working on my posture so that I do not sit or stand in hunched or slouched positions, and I try to walk with an "inner corset".

For the first time in 6 months, I am hopeful that I may be able to run again. I don't think the shots alone will do the trick. I think these Foundation exercises will be crucial to my continuing recovery. Wish me luck! And good luck to you in finding a solution for your pain as well!

I made about a 90% recovery, but it wasn't directly from either book. The cortisone shots reduced my pain to a level of 1-2, which enabled me to start working with a personal trainer. I worked out with an exceptionally knowledgable trainer at the Equinox gym in Palo Alto. Over 3.5 months, we developed my core and gluteal muscles. I truly developed the inner corset that Gokhale talks about, but it was through vigorous weight training. I lost 5 lbs of fat and gained 5 lbs of muscle, and my body fat went from 21% to 16%.

My posture is now erect, and I also focus on Using my glutes (the largest muscle in the body) to walk and lift, instead of my back. This plus the tight abdomen reduced my back pain to almost zero, and the trainer also showed me how to break down tightness in the hip flexors, psoas, piriformis, glute and leg muscles. It turns out that much of my low back pain nowadays comes from tightness of the first two muscles, which I can break down by rolling on a softball and using the body back buddy.

So while this book got me on the road to recovery, the real solution was to work with an expert to strengthen my whole body and change some body mechanics. Working with my trainer was like physical therapy on steroids. One downside of weight training though, is that it can never stop. I work out on my own now, but If I go 4 days without weight training, my core goes flaccid and my back pain returns. So My back is a chronic problem and will always be a work in progress. But at least I returned to playing and refereeing in July. And then I tore my meniscus, of course.

Not Just For Investigators

I'm a mystery novelist. Most mystery novels involve murder, since that is the most serious crime, creates the most drama, gives the protagonist the biggest goal, etc. With the popularity of shows like CSI, and procedural mystery novels such as Patricia Cornwell and Kathy Reichs, accuracy has become even more important. Readers are less likely to accept "creative license," and are quick to point out if something doesn't make sense.

This book, which is used by police academies around the country, including the FBI Academy, is an essential guide to how homicides are investigated, or should be investigated. As a writer of crime novels, I have found this book to be a valuable reference in making sure that the police in my stories, and my private detective protagonist, are "true to life" in how they handle the investigations of murders.

For any writer of crime fiction, this book should be on your desk for easy reference at all times--it has a permanent place on my desk.

Absolutely a fantastic book and great for any police officer and investigator.
Graphic, raw, real, and very informative.

My only hangup is that I paid for a NEW book, but mine was obviously pre-owned, as I found any excerpts highlighted and underlined.

Updated and timely

Very detailed presentation of the profession. Not for the weak-stomach, but if you're going to be in the business or even pretend to be, then you can't have one anyway. Geberth has indeed updated with more recent issues/technology. Still, could use a good editor as it has more than a few spelling/grammar issues. Well worth the money if you want to immerse yourself in the subject matter.
