The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History, by Robert M. Edsel

At the same time Adolf Hitler was attempting to take over the western world, his armies were methodically seeking and hoarding the finest art treasures in Europe. The Fuehrer had begun cataloguing the art he planned to collect as well as the art he would destroy: "degenerate" works he despised.
In a race against time, behind enemy lines, often unarmed, a special force of American and British museum directors, curators, art historians, and others, called the Monuments Men, risked their lives scouring Europe to prevent the destruction of thousands of years of culture.
Focusing on the eleven-month period between D-Day and V-E Day, this fascinating account follows six Monuments Men and their impossible mission to save the world's great art from the Nazis.

From Publishers Weekly
WWII was the most destructive war in history and caused the greatest dislocation of cultural artifacts. Hundreds of thousands of items remain missing. The main burden fell to a few hundred men and women, curators and archivists, artists and art historians from 13 nations. Their task was to save and preserve what they could of Europe's great art, and they were called the Monuments Men. (Coincidentally or not, this book appears only briefly after Ilaria Dagnini Brey's The Venus Fixers: The Untold Story of the Allied Soldiers Who Saved Italy's Art During World War II, Reviews, June 1.) Edsel has presented their achievements in documentaries and photographs. He and Witter (coauthor of the bestselling Dewey) are no less successful here. Focusing on the organization's role in northwest Europe, they describe the Monuments Men from their initial mission to limit combat damage to structures and artifacts to their changed focus of locating missing items. Most had been stolen by the Nazis. In southern Germany alone, over a thousand caches emerged, containing everything from church bells to insect collections. The story is both engaging and inspiring. In the midst of a total war, armies systematically sought to mitigate cultural loss. (Sept. 3)

Review
"After World War Two I served as a British member of the 'Monuments' section in Germany. Our task, I believe, was truly important - we were restoring to Europe evidence of its own civilization, which the War seemed virtually to have destroyed - and I was lucky to have had a chance to participate. It is excellent that Mr Edsel has now recorded this remarkable episode, and I am grateful to him for devoting so much energy to telling the stories of those involved." -- Anne Olivier Bell "Highly Readable ... a remarkable history" Washington Post "Engaging and inspiring" Publishers Weekly

About the Author
Robert Edsel began his career in the oil and gas exploration business. In 1996 he moved to Europe to pursue his interests in the arts. Settling in Florence seeing some of the great works, he wondered how all of the monuments and art treasures survived the devastation of World War II. During the ensuing years, he devoted himself to finding the answer. In the process, he commissioned major research that has resulted in this book. Robert also coproduced the related documentary film, The Rape of Europa, and cowrote Rescuing Da Vinci, a photographic history of an art heist of epic proportions and the Allied rescue effort. The author lives in Dallas.

Bret Witter cowrote the bestseller Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World (Grand Central, 2008). He lives in Louisville, KY.

If you are patient, you will find the treasure in this book
By EJ
If I had written this review when I was only 25% of the way through this book, I would have given it 2 stars. The beginning of the book can only be described as plodding and in my opinion was not very well constructed. However, I hung in there and the payoff came in the remainder of the book.

The book describes an overlooked group of men and women who served during WWII to save priceless buildings and works of arts in Europe. It also describes the internal conflicts of these folks who wondered, for example, if the German people deserved the return of their Nazi-stolen art. The efforts of these dedicated service-men and -women were, naturally enough, largely overshadowed by the inarguably more important discoveries at the end of WWII, such as the truths revealed by the liberation of the concentration camps. This book is thus a wonderful contribution to an overlooked history of the time.

The end of the book describes the discovery of hidden German repositories of art; the volume and quality of art found in these hiding places is absolutely staggering. I had the pleasure of seeing Michelangelo's flawless Madonna when I was in Bruges and was riveted by her WWII story, which was not described in any detail in the materials given out by the museums there.

In summary: stick with it. The book had some problems with flow, especially in the beginning, but the payoff of the middle and ending was worth it.

A story that we all should read
By David I. Williams
One of the most enjoyable aspects to the study of history is always finding new stories. Even when you think you know a lot about a field you find something new and enjoyable. That one of the many reasons that I enjoyed Monuments Men so much. Robert Edsel has provided us with a look at an area of World War II studies that has gone virtually unnoticed for nearly 70 years. The men and women of the MFAA (Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives) Division served an almost unknown, but incredibly valuable part in the war against the destructive evil of Nazism.

When Hitler's forces overran Europe they set about looting the national artistic treasures in a methodical manner. Priceless treasures were pillaged from the museums and galleries of France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, and other European nations. All property belonging to Jews were taken. Hitler's dream was to create an enormous museum that would be the envy of the entire world. Instead he launched the most destructive war in history.

The allies were aware of the cultural heritage in the areas that they would be fighting. This is why the MFAA was created. The original MFAA officers were tasked with traveling into the war zones and identifying historic sites that needed to be preserved. The stories of what these men accomplished is truly amazing. Time after time they were able to save important buildings from being destroyed.

As the book progresses we see another dimension of their work. They began to investigate the Nazi looting. Their job shifted from simply protecting buildings from destruction to locating stolen works of art. At times the book resembles an action thriller story. The theft of priceless works of art. The heroic civilians who work undercover to spy on the Nazis. The small band of men rushing from place to place to save these priceless objects.

I really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed the subject, I enjoyed the writing, I enjoyed everything about it. Robert Edsel has done an excellent job of sharing this important story with us. Perhaps there is no greater evidence of the statement that those who do not study history are bound to repeat it. We never studied the important work of the Monuments Men. As a result the allies were not prepared when Iraq was invaded in 2003. The looting of those priceless antiquities could have been avoided by simply employing a group like the MFAA. Perhaps this book will help to raise awareness so that tragedies like the Iraq museum will not happen again.

Interesting Read
By Jean
A few years ago, on a trip to St. Louis, Missouri and I toured their well-known art museum. I noted a number of paintings on loan by a Jewish family that stated the paintings were returned to the family by the Monument Men. I said to myself I need to read the book. Finally, I just did.

From 1939 to the end of World War II, the Nazis Army seized priceless paintings, sculptures, tapestries and other artworks from museum, palaces, cathedrals and private homes. The Nazi plundered everything and carted it off to Germany. The Allied Forces created a group called the MFAA (Monuments, Fine Art and Archives) Division. This group consisted of men and women who were curators, archivists, art historians and artist. Their job was to find and return the art to its owners.

The book is well written and researched. Edsel examined family letters and records, museum and church archives and even the Nazi archives. The book got off to a slow start but the ending was much more interesting. Sometimes it read like a detective story. I found the repetitiveness very annoying. I found the story interesting but the way the book was written just did not grab me as I felt it should. It is a hard thing to explain. I am only going to give this book a three rating instead of a four because the author never managed to obtain that something to make the book great. The book was 468 pages. I read the e-book on my Kindle app for my iPad.

The Irish Heritage Cookbook, by Margaret Johnson

Roughly 44 million Americans of Irish descent, though understandably proud of their heritage, have grown up with a shocking degree of cultural deprivation with regard to the culinary traditions of their ancestors. For most, Irish cuisine means potatoes, corned beef, and cabbage. Now at last, The Irish Heritage Cookbook will set the record straight. Margaret Johnson offers a much-needed fresh perspective on what Irish cooking is all about. She tells stories about the foods of Erin and how these dishes were reinvented by Irish emigrants and their offspring, evolving to include new ingredients and to suit modern circumstances and tastes. Offering a bountiful collection of both traditional recipes and contemporary innovations from a host of chefs and cooks in the Old Country and the New, The Irish Heritage Cookbook affirms at last the place of Irish cooking among the great cuisines of the world—and one to be enjoyed by all who love Ireland.

From Publishers Weekly
Food writer and Massachusetts native Johnson delivers a fresh perspective on Irish cookery with an engaging collection of recipes culled from Irish (and Irish-American) chefs, hoteliers and long-time home cooks who have reinterpreted traditional dishes with earthy panache. Organized by topography?hill, dale, waters, etc.?chapters include historic sidebars and anecdotes, such as information on medieval Irish castle banquets. Despite an occasional gourmet detour (e.g., Mussel Soup with Oatmeal-Herb Crust or Warm Woodland Salad with Champagne Vinaigrette), robust, rustic Irish cooking prevails. Recipes are not for the diet conscious: copious amounts of butter and cream, meat-with-meat pairings and other caloric combinations predominate (e.g., Black Pudding Roisin, with pig blood sausage; Dublin Coddle, a pork, bacon and potato casserole; Quail with Chestnut Stuffing and Burgundy Sauce). Ireland's culinary "roots" (carrots, turnips, parsnips and tubers) as well as distinctly Irish libations (stout, whiskey and poitins, a distillation of barley, sugar and water), punctuate many recipes. Relatively uncomplicated, many of these meals involve minimal preparation time and can be easily rendered by novice home cooks. Looking beyond boiled potatoes and cabbage, Johnson provides valuable insight into Ireland's gastronomic heritage.

Not my favorite cookbook and not very Irish
By ARG
Not my favorite cookbook and not very Irish. This is first very Anglo Irish heavily on Anglo. Organization is bizarre. Entrees breads deserts are mixed together depending on what type of ingredient from the orchard from the sea etc. Makes it hard to use in meal planning. Mostly Irish Heritage name I take exception to.

This is a wonderful addition to my kitchen
By John Phillips
This is a wonderful addition to my kitchen. Our family being from Ireland, the book offered several dishes that I have not had in 25 years. So far have made 10 classic dishes, all were loved by all. Will make a great book for special occasions with the family and close friends.

Very nicely organized book of Irish recipes and Ingredients
By B. Marold
`the Irish Heritage Cookbook' by Irish-American high school teacher and culinary writer, Margaret M. Johnson is a near-perfect reflection of how the Irish cuisine has grown up around the products of Irish farming, animal husbandry, and fishing. The chapter organization facilitates appreciating this situation with the following chapters:

From the Land with recipes for fruits and vegetables, especially root vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, turnips, parsnips and onions and tree fruit such as apples. The potato recipes are no surprise, the recipes combining potatoes with other root vegetables and with apples is new. I am especially happy to see recipes for champ and colcannon side by side, as I constantly forget what it is which distinguishes one version of these mashed potato recipes from the other.

From the Farm with recipes for meat dishes, especially beef, pork, and chicken. Like the previous chapter, one is taken, here, with the rich combination of meats with apples, beer, and whiskey. Unlike some recipes, I am happy to see that the author gives us the recipe for making the corned beef for our corned beef and cabbage dish.

From the Dairy features milk and egg recipes and recipes from milk products such as cheese and cream. While I have known that Ireland is a rich milk producing country, I was never aware that it had a very rich cheese making industry. In fact, almost all the cheese varieties used in these recipes are type made famous elsewhere such as cheddar from England, Parmesan from Italy, and Swiss style cheeses. The Irish varieties in fact mostly seem to be variations on the neighboring cheddar and the product of the Alps, `Swiss' cheeses.

From the Hillside is all about Lamb dishes. Oddly, in spite of the fact that I am weary of seeing stock recipes in virtually every cookbook I open, I do miss a good recipe for lamb stock in this book, as recipes for lamb stock are not nearly as common as for chicken, veal, beef, and fish. There is a very simple recipe for `lamb broth', but none for `homemade lamb stock', an ingredient in many of these recipes. I miss it because Deborah Madison has converted me to the notion that stocks should ideally be made to fit the dishes in which they are to be used. I also miss the fact that Ms. Johnson is not more specific in specifying the source of her stewing lamb pieces.

From the Waters is all about fish dishes, especially salmon, trout, sole, oysters, and mussels. As wine is used in the fish poaching recipes, I assume these are more likely from restaurants than from home cooks, as I suspect wine was a real luxury item in Ireland of olden days.

From the Wild covers recipes from game such as turkey, goose, game hens, duck, quail, pheasant, venison, rabbit, and guinea fowl. Here again I'm surprised and impressed by the wide use of apples and apple cider in the recipes. It even includes a recipe for a wild duck pate. I'm a bit surprised that there is not more charcuterie recipes for things such as sausage. I guess Ireland was cold enough in the fall and winter that one could store meats in the root cellar in the cold without fancy preservation techniques.

From the Hearth is all about baking, with the famous Irish Soda Bread occupying the first two recipes. We find that even many recipes without `soda' in the title turn out to be leavened by baking soda or baking powder or both. Next to soda bread, the most famous Irish type of bread must be scones, of which there are plenty of recipes here. And, next to wheat, the most popular grain ingredient is, of course, oats prepared in one way or another.

From the Orchards and the Fields contains fruit dishes and desserts. Here again, the stars are apples, potatoes, and oats, with a welcome role for the great character actors, rhubarb and strawberries.

While this is the first full sized Irish cookbook I have reviewed, I feel safe in heartily recommending it to anyone who wants a great source of relatively simple Irish and Irish-inspired recipes in an inexpensive volume. I believe I will find more elaborate, or at least more culinarily fussy books on the subject, but this one is a keeper!

Pain is nothing that most of us would count as a blessing. But his fifty-year career working with leprosy patients in India and the U.S. convinced Dr. Paul Brand that pain is one of God's great gifts to us. As an indicator that tells us something is wrong, pain has a value that becomes clearest in its absence. Those who feel no pain reap terrible consequences. In The Gift Nobody Wants, Philip Yancey and Dr. Brand look at pain--what it is, and why we need it if we're to live life fully. "This is no dry-as-dust philosophical discussion of pain; rather, it's a vital, flesh-and-blood accountfine reading for anyone."

From the Author
Philip Yancey has a knack for tackling the tough questions—for articulating the knotty issues of faith, the nitty-gritty realities of being Christian. These five Gold Medallion Award-winning books are vintage Yancey, exploring topics common to us all

Powerful and very well written!
By T.Worth
This book is wonderfully written. As a reader, I truly felt like I was there with Dr. Brand. This is a story that really makes one think about the fact that we, as human beings, all feel pain. We almost always see that pain as only a burden none of us wish to carry. However, Dr. Brand's story is about the hardship experienced by lepers in the mid 20th century which was exacerbated due to the absence of pain in their lives. Long after the individual had taken the medication that would arrest the virus of leprosy, they were still left with the inability to feel pain due to the damage wrought by the disease. This absence of pain is what caused all the serious infections and loss of limbs, etc. Incredible what he did to help these people.

Cerebral Analysis of Pain
By Catherine Hudson
I bought this book after reading Philip Yancy's book Soul Survivor. Dr. Philip Brand was a mentor described in one of the chapters. This book is a biographical account of Dr. Brand's life. It provides compelling insight into the physiology of pain and why it is indeed a gift we should be grateful for. It definitely changed my thinking.

Mr. Yancey and Dr. Brand are the authors. I expected more in the way of 'Christian' testimony, especially from Philip Yancey, to be stated throughout but I am not disappointed. Actions have always spoken much louder than words and Dr. Brand lived out beautiful grace. mercy and love throughout his career.

Anyone experiencing physiological or emotional pain would benefit from this book.

Thought-provoking book!
By Ashley N. Henry
This is a very interesting book, not your typical book about pain. It starts off by the author talking about leprosy patients that had all kinds of issues (chewing their fingers, breaking bones, losing limbs) all because they had no sense of pain. Pain or discomfort wasn't even a thought in their minds because they had no warning system in their body. All they could feel was pressure and tingling with intense pain, and they became fascinated with the effect it had on their body, partly because other people would have extreme responses. Not to sound gory or anything, but this book does give real details about real people that struggled with a life without pain and the destruction it led to in their body. In modern society, most people think that it would be great to never experience pain and to never have to take drugs again to deal with the pain. The reality is, pain is a GOOD thing! Pain is the body's built in warning system that something is going wrong and needs to be fixed. Far too often we seek to relieve pain by living in comfort, pampering ourselves or drugging our systems to feel "normal again", yet completely ignoring the true source of the problem. This book will definitely give you a new perspective on pain and how thankful you should be for it! Pain truly is a GIFT!

Really cute story
By Amy Girven
We first saw this book during my daughter's visit to the dentist, right after they showed us her front tooth was loose. We read it together and my daughter giggled at just about every page. She loved the book so much, she wanted to take it home with us,but knew she couldn't. After we got home I looked up the book and ordered it without telling her. 3 days later, she got the book in the mail and has been reading parts of it on her own as part of our nightly reading time. She has since lost both front bottom baby teeth, but still loves to read this.

The Just City, by Susan S. Fainstein

For much of the twentieth century improvement in the situation of disadvantaged communities was a focus for urban planning and policy. Yet over the past three decades the ideological triumph of neoliberalism has caused the allocation of spatial, political, economic, and financial resources to favor economic growth at the expense of wider social benefits. Susan Fainstein's concept of the "just city" encourages planners and policymakers to embrace a different approach to urban development. Her objective is to combine progressive city planners' earlier focus on equity and material well-being with considerations of diversity and participation so as to foster a better quality of urban life within the context of a global capitalist political economy.

Fainstein applies theoretical concepts about justice developed by contemporary philosophers to the concrete problems faced by urban planners and policymakers and argues that, despite structural obstacles, meaningful reform can be achieved at the local level. In the first half of The Just City, Fainstein draws on the work of John Rawls, Martha Nussbaum, Iris Marion Young, Nancy Fraser, and others to develop an approach to justice relevant to twenty-first-century cities, one that incorporates three central concepts: diversity, democracy, and equity. In the book's second half, Fainstein tests her ideas through case studies of New York, London, and Amsterdam by evaluating their postwar programs for housing and development in relation to the three norms. She concludes by identifying a set of specific criteria for urban planners and policymakers to consider when developing programs to assure greater justice in both the process of their formulation and their effects.

Review

"Susan Fainstein's book is the result of some 20 years of intense research and thinking on the subject of the 'just city,' and it seems likely to me to become something of a classic. . . . Fainstein's slightly deadpan style serves only to make her accounts more compelling. A recent history of planning in London, written with equality, democracy and diversity in mind, is really useful as a teaching tool. Here the Docklands development, Coin Street and the 2012 Olympics are placed under scrutiny, with the last of those three, perhaps not surprisingly, receiving poor marks on the grounds of equity not least because the 'huge expenditure involved took away resources from other parts of London and the country more widely without providing them any benefits beyond the glory of hosting the Games.' . . . She notes that there are two possible responses to the injustices illustrated by the book. The first is to recognize the impossibility of achieving even small amounts of justice within the dominant system of global capitalism. The second, which is one that Fainstein herself adheres to, is that much can be achieved through incremental change. The book's final chapter is therefore devoted to a discussion of policies that are conducive to social justice in cities. Her vision is of a world where market forces no longer dominate decisions about city planning and justice drives the world of policy."― Flora Samuel, Times Higher Education Supplement, 18 November 2010

"The just city is one in which equity, democracy, and diversity are important considerations. This is in contrast with the city as growth machine. Fainstein examines three cities: New York, London, and Amsterdam. She provides a history of post–World War II planning and then focuses on fairly recent cases of development in each. Her goals, though modest, are important if growing inequality in urban areas is to be reversed. Recommended."―Choice

"[Fainstein's] work deepens, enriches, and extends deliberative planning theory in complementary rather than antagonistic ways. Like the idea of justice itself, The Just City is not the last word concluding a debate. More important, it is a trenchant, penetrating, and reasoned contribution to precisely that discursive and contested, but necessary and fruitful deliberative process that fuels the hope for progress toward realization of the just city."―Sarah J. Peterson, Journal of Planning Education and Research (September 2014)

"In this book, Susan Fainstein draws together her conceptual work over the past twenty years on the just city and her empirical work on urban development projects in major Western cities. Her commitment to social justice shines through this work, and she provides a challenging approach to evaluating urban development projects from this perspective. The result is a valuable and stimulating contribution to planning theory and to the evaluation of urban policy."―Patsy Healey, Newcastle University

"The Just City provides a much-needed review of a set of issues that bedevil planners and scholars, issues often framed as plan vs. market, equity vs. efficiency, or participation vs. power. Susan S. Fainstein's formulation and working through of justice and its three components of democracy, diversity, and equity are very helpful."―William W. Goldsmith, Cornell University

One of the best books I've read on urban planning!
By Jeff
She really dives into the subject of justice and equity. This is a subject that's often talked about in the urban planning world of Portland, OR, but seldom do people really know what it means. This book was extremely clarifying and written in a way that is easy to understand and not written like a doctoral thesis. She starts with a philosophical discussion about what defines justice and, then, comes up with three criteria: democracy, equity, and diversity. In the three middle chapters she uses the examples of New York City, London, and Amsterdam as examples and analyzes each on the grounds of justice. She finishes the book with simple guidelines for planning a just city. Fantastic book!

Love this, I have wanted this in the NKJV for a long time.
By Mike McCauley
I just received my Dake NKJV and my biggest concern was waiting to see the print size. I am glad to say I am pleased. It is comparable to, and I think easier to read than the standard size Life Application Bibles as a point of comparison. Both the text and the notes seem more darkly printed or bolder than what I see in my Life Application Bible. Therefore I can read the text and notes more easily than in a standard size Life Application Bible. Also it is much easier to read than the standard size KJV Dake I have been using. I have to use a magnifying glass to comfortably read the notes in that one, while here I can read the notes with my glasses (strong trifocals here) without it. For those wondering, the font is not as large as in the large print KJV Dake. The font on both the text and notes I believe are 10 point in that large print version. In the NKJV here, the text is I believe a 9 point and the notes are a 7 point. So if you need the large 10 point font, this may or may not work for you depending on your eye sight.
This Bible is large I admit, four pounds and very thick, similar in thickness to the large print KJV Dake (which weighs over five pounds) but not as wide or tall. The leather soft man made cover, which comes in burgundy or black, leather is not available, is more flexible than the bonded leather on the KJV Dakes. I will have to see how it holds up.
The note and text layout is different as well, two columns of bible text on the top half of each page and three columns of notes on the bottom half. Also the notes at the bottom are organized to each chapter and verse as opposed to the KJV Dake which are listed by letter only, A to Z, which on some pages of the old style in the KJV can have multiple A's and B's tied to multiple verses on the page. With the new layout therefore, it is easier to find the notes for a particular verse if you are trying to quickly find information on it. You just look for a chapter and verse in the bottom notes.
1. I am so glad this NKJV style is now available which is my preferred reading Bible version.
2. I find it so much easier to read than the print size on the old standard size KJV Dake.
3. I prefer this new layout. I think it will prove easier to study with.
4. I find the paper better than I had expected, brighter white, and thicker than say the Life Application hard backs, and much better than the KJV Dake standard size hardback I own. Ghosting is there but tolerable, and better than many.
5. If I find the text block is sewn and not glued I may have it rebound in leather. I like it that much, yes.
6. Over all a good job by Dake Bible publishers.

I hope this is helpful, be blessed!

Amazing Bible!
By murphy
I have owned several study Bibles, truthfully I'm not sure I could even count of remember all of them. I also own the older beautifully made KJV Dake. I will have to admit I was disappointed in the quality of the bible itself. It is not genuine leather, it is an imitation leather. It is not symth sewn either. The content is without a doubt the best available in a Study Bible. Page after page of notes at the end of each book along with the notes on each page. I will not elaborate on that as you have no doubt read all about his notes in other reviews. Absolutely the easiest bible to use for research into the scripture. The notes are excellent and I find myself being amazed that one person was able to put this all together. I thought enough of this Bible to send it off to be rebound with genuine leather and to have a sewn binding. As much as I loved my much older (bought over 20 years ago) Dake, the notes in this newer NKJV are placed in a much more convenient manor. Love mine. Well worth the money. Buy and prepare to get caught up in all the hours of study Dake put into this exceptional work. And to the Dake Family, Finis Dake's work and dedication deserves the best quality, just as it did years ago.

Updated layout, easier to use
By Randy A Brown
Cover and Binding
The covers of my review copies are both an imitation leather called Leathersoft. One is black and the other is burgundy. They both have the title embossed into the cover. This is one of the better imitation leathers that I’ve felt. The liner feels like vinyl-covered paper. The connecting point is taped. Most Bibles are made this way, but due to how large and heavy this Bible is I am concerned about how long it will last. Time will tell.

The binding is section sewn. It has no trouble lying flat. It stays open in Genesis 1 and will lay even flatter once it’s broken in.

Paper and Print
The paper looks like the standard paper found in today’s study Bibles. It feels like good quality and the opacity isn’t bad. There are 10 blank pages in the back for writing your own notes.

The Bible text has a 9-point font (9/10) and the notes have a 7-point font. The print quality looks very consistent throughout. The black-letter seems to be consistent. The red-letter does fade a little but it’s not bad.

Layout
The layout is updated to a more modern study Bible style. The text is presented in two-column, verse-by-verse format. OT quotes are in oblique type and poetry is set to verse. Notes are presented at the bottom of the page in three-column format. There is a header that includes the book name and chapter numbers that appear on that page, a summary of that page, and the page number. There is a footer that contains the NKJV notes that are keyed to the text by numbers.

There are two types of section headings within the text. The first type is the NKJV section headings in bold. The other type is in smaller text that is centered, numbered, and presented in outline form. Many of them include references.

There are symbols in the margins next to some verses. A star indicates a prophecy, a circle shows a command, a triangle shows a promise, and a square shows a message from God.

Notes and References
Notes and references are keyed to the text by letters. Rather than having them keyed separately, they both appear in the same location, at the bottom of the page under the same key. The notes appear first and then the references. This makes it easier to find them quickly. I like the way this system works because there’s just one place to look on the page for all of the information you want.

A lot of the notes are factual and include statistics. For example: Exodus 13:5 says “24th prophecy in Ex. (13:5 fulfilled). Next, v. 19.” This gives a chain reference for all the prophecies in Exodus. There is also monetary information. It’s nice to know how much a shekel is worth in 2013 dollars. There is also information on geography, cultures, customs, etc.

Other notes contain lists, such as Acts 13:4, which list the 15 places of Paul’s first missionary journey. It seems like lists comprise the majority of the notes. I found them helpful and informative.

There are also Greek and Hebrew definitions. There are plenty of them throughout the whole Bible. Some give simple definitions. Others give longer explanations with references to other verses that use the same word. These are great for word studies.
There are also doctrinal notes. The doctrinal focus is Trinitarian, Pentecostal, and old-earth Creationism. Prophecy is a major theme throughout the notes with a focus on the various dispensations.

Even more notes are found at the end of each book. These are presented in 3 columns per page. Most books have around 2 or 3 pages. Genesis includes 14 pages of notes. Isaiah has 39, Daniel has 13, Matthew has 2, Mark has 1, John has 2, Acts has 3, Romans has 3, and Revelation has 13. They include information like the notes found in the text – primarily lists, facts, Greek and Hebrew definitions, etc.

Like all study Bibles, I encourage readers to do their own study using multiple passages and study tools with prayer. Remember that notes are not infallible – only God’s Word is infallible.

Rather than having book introductions, the Dake Annotated Reference Bible contains book summaries. It’s basically the same information; it just appears at the end of the book. The summaries include the date and place of writing, the author, main theme of the book, and statistics.

Complete Concordance and Cyclopedic Index
This is a concordance and encyclopedia rolled into one. It has 338 pages and is presented in 3 columns per page. It contains many verses and facts. Facts are given in lists. The entry for God includes 15 full columns and has 8 lists:
• 44 appearances of God
• 10 arguments for the existence of God
• 22 attributes of God
• 12 facts about God and His Righteousness
• 5 Hebrew Words for God
• One Main Greek Word for God
• Things that Please God
• The Word “High” used for God
There is even an entry for evolution which has 9 full columns and includes:
• Utter Foolishness of Evolution
• True Science Rejects
• 12 Fallacies of Evolution
• A Christian Must Believe That:
• 15 Facts Disproving Evolution

The Biblical entries appear before the lists. This makes it easy to distinguish the concordance portion from the encyclopedia portion. It also makes it easy to find what you’re looking for because you don’t have to look in more than one place for all of the information. This version differs from the KJV edition. The KJV edition gives the page numbers to turn to, whereas the NKJV edition prints all of the information in the cyclopedic index. This makes the cyclopedic index larger but it’s easier to get to the information.

There is a lot of information in the cyclopedic index. There is information that is doctrinal based (like always, do your own study) and information that is factual based (non-denominational). It is a good resource for sermon and class prep as well as personal study. There is even a reading plan to read the Bible through in one year.

I have one very small gripe about the layout of the index. The cyclopedic index would be easier to use if it had the first and last words at the top of the page. On most pages it doesn’t matter, but there are some pages that are extended from the previous page and continue to the next page. This causes you to flip a few more pages to see where you are in the index.

Maps and Charts
The maps and charts have mostly been replaced. There are 9 pages that include 11 color maps. Some of the maps contain notes. I would like to see an index to maps added. The charts are also color and include outline studies of the various dispensations.

Conclusion
The Dake Annotated Reference Bible in NKJV is a lot nicer edition than its older KJV brother. The newer layout and font is much easier to read and use. I would like to see Dake Publishing update the KJV edition to match the NKJV edition. There is a wealth of information on every page. This Bible excels at lists and facts and would be a good resource for sermon and class prep, and personal study.

Nice book...should be accurate though
By Real Time
Nice book; hundreds of pages and lots of great information. Prima did such a good job with the ME1 and ME2 guides I ordered this one without checking the buyer's reviews. That will be the last time I make that mistake.

Sadly, the index is only fair at best, I could not find a decent table of contents and the weapon ratings (weight, capacity, etc...) are a bit off which make it difficult to use the descriptions as a reliable guide. There are a couple other items, like where they simply parrot the exact words one can read in game, but I want to keep this short.

Having played through ME3 twice before ordering the guide (wanted to see if I missed anything) it turned out I hit everything mentioned in the guide, and even matched several of the 'builds' for my NPC companions. It 'is' a nice book, but I doubt anyone that has played ME1 & 2 will need it. Even if you start with ME3, the forums are a better source of information, in my opinion.

Though I am not completely satisfied with my purchase, I am "OK" with it; hence the three of five stars.

Very worthwhile strategy guide, especially for completists
By wjones14
This guide covers the game really well. It hides spoilers by warning you, placing major spoilers upside-down, etc. It gives detailed step-by-step instructions on how to beat each mission in multiple ways, allowing you to play the game using brute force, long range sniping, stealth, or whatever combination is your fancy. The index is nicely done too, making it easy to navigate to any mission, system, weapon description, armor set, or combat type.

It loses one star for me because there is no additional information or opinion on things like weapons and armor, other than what is already in the game. Also, I think a plot synopsis would have been nice - you have to read through the entire mission walk-throughs to learn the plot details, and the plot sometimes gets lost in all the details.

Decent quality production, lacking in some content
By Teahouse Fox
I have never bought any of the Mass Effect game guides prior to this purchase. I didn't buy this one until I had finished the game the first time. But then, I also avoided the entire Internet until I'd finished this game and found myself with more questions than answers. Lest this turn into a complaint about the quality of choices or outcomes in ME3, this review will be spoiler free.

I do love the franchise, and bought the collector's edition of the game itself, then the collector's edition of the guide. To be honest, I get more of a charge out of exploring and trying things in an RPG than I do playing the game glued to a walkthrough. Mass Effect games were (for the most part) not like, say, recent Final Fantasy games where you would discover 80 hours in that some obscure random act in the first 12 hours of the game has torpedoed your chance to farm some component to get the ultimate cheese grinder mod or something like that.

However, choices and outcomes for ME3 events in several places are highly dependent on choices you made and quests you completed going all the way back to the original Mass Effect (potentially a total 150 hours of gameplay over three titles). Buying the game guide made more sense, especially since I'm a huge fan, and the book itself is made to last longer than the paperback version.

This is the hardcover version of the guide, but don't expect the highest quality hardcover. The contents are a mostly visual guide on heavyweight paper. The binding is glued, however; not stitched, so over time may still fall victim to the contents cracking out of it's shell. I have not used the guide as a walkthrough, but only for spot checking certain events and choices, so have not abused the binding in a way that a book I relied on heavily might be.

As far as the actual informational content, the book does not entirely deliver, but makes the argument against making physical guide book purchases. The index, as noted in other reviews, is rather weak, and lacks summarized game choices considering one of the biggest factors in the game ending, War Assets and Readiness Ratings are a pure numbers game. Surely, this might be a daunting task, considering that War Assets might change based on imported data from one or both previous games, or none at all, and variable input from choices in ME 3 itself.

The book makes few apologies for this, but acknowledges that it lacks this information, and it's one of the twitchiest things about ME3 that might MAKE you want to get a game guide. If that's what you're looking for, then bluntly stated: This book is not going to help you!

Granted, the book cannot account for errors in the game import functionality affecting your scores, but the presence of the information of what DOES affect your score might help you sort out that your game is suffering from an import error. There is no list of the different support conversations indicating how they affect your War Assets (and they do!). In fact, there is hardly any acknowledgement of them at all.

Also, the guide falls down on some key decisions, in an attempt to make the book spoiler free, or simply has misinformation (the conditions for the optional endings to the Quarian-Geth conflict, for one). Personally, I don't expect my game guides to be spoiler free. Anyone using a game guide, I figure, has taken a fairly soft stance on spoilers, and some highlighted boxes indicating spoiler content will suffice for protecting what's left of the surprise in the gaming experience. The book simply omits the info entirely.

At which point, I still found myself, with my old friend Google, gleaning the different choices from various sites.

When Christians First Met Muslims: A Sourcebook of the Earliest Syriac Writings on Islam, by Michael Philip Penn

The first Christians to meet Muslims were not Latin-speaking Christians from the western Mediterranean or Greek-speaking Christians from Constantinople but rather Christians from northern Mesopotamia who spoke the Aramaic dialect of Syriac. Living under Muslim rule from the seventh century to the present, Syriac Christians wrote the first and most extensive accounts of Islam, describing a complicated set of religious and cultural exchanges not reducible to the solely antagonistic.

Through its critical introductions and new translations of this invaluable historical material, When Christians First Met Muslims allows scholars, students, and the general public to explore the earliest interactions between what eventually became the world’s two largest religions, shedding new light on Islamic history and Christian-Muslim relations.

From the Inside Flap
"Michael Philip Penn’s When Christians First Met Muslims is an extremely important text. The sources Penn collated in Syriac are among some of the earliest reports we have about the emerging community there. Scholars of the latest of 'late antiquity,' of early Byzantium, and of the early community of believers around Muhammad will benefit from having these sources in English. Penn's scholarship is truly superior.” —Ellen Muehlberger, author of Angels in Late Ancient Christianity

“Syriac sources preserve our earliest historical information for Christian-Muslim encounters, written by Christian contemporaries who experienced firsthand the massive changes brought by the Arab conquests of the seventh century and thereafter in the Middle East. This volume offers a new collection of vivid and lucid translations that open to the reader new vistas on how religions interact, adapt, and flourish, even under circumstances of inexorable change. Michael Penn is a religion scholar of rare dexterity in handling primary sources, secondary scholarship, and cutting-edge critical theory, all with equal command. Here is a volume for scholars and students of religion, history, and culture. It will matter enormously for all who share an interest in Christianity or Islam.”—Susan Harvey, Willard Prescott and Annie McClelland Smith Professor of Religious Studies at Brown University

"As a source for the early Islamic period and for the earliest responses of Christians to the new historical conditions of the post-conquest period this collection is a useful tool for both scholarly research and classroom teaching. Even those few of us who work on Syriac sources do not commonly have an immediate grasp of the range of texts covered in When Christians First Met Muslims. This handy book will contribute to a further appreciation for the unique variety of perspectives Syriac Christians had on early Islam."—Adam H. Becker, Associate Professor of Classics and Religious Studies at New York University

About the Author
Michael Philip Penn is William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Religion at Mount Holyoke College and the author of Envisioning Islam: Syriac Christians in the Early Muslim World and Kissing Christians: Ritual and Community in the Late Ancient Church.

Outstanding Work of Scholarship
By Amazon Customer
I bought this book yesterday and read it in one day. Right now I plan to buy copies for several people I believe would benefit from the information contained in this volume. This book provides a translation and a contextualized summary of each of the written references to early Islam by Syriac Christians, in chronological order. This book is suitable for specialists and non-specialists alike, but those familiar with 7th century Middle Eastern History will derive the most benefit from this work. Much of the scholarship on Muslim-Christian interaction is based on Byzantine or Frankish sources and the history of Islam is written using sources written in Arabic. By translating the early Syriac sources, Penn provides an overlooked point of view in early Islamic history and Muslim-Christian interaction, of Christians who lived within the caliphate as Islam developed in the Rashidun and Umayyad caliphates.

This is a Must Read!
By Leonardo Buscemi
This is a gem. A very interesting fact was pointed by the author in the introduction: In the first two centuries of the existence of Christianity, if you added up all the non-Christian references (by Greek or Latin historians and commentators) to Jesus Christ and the religious movement that was forming around his legacy, you would have a few pages. In contrast, if you take all the Sryiac writings about Mohammed and the religious movement that was forming around his legacy from the first two centuries after Mohammed's life and career, you would have hundreds of pages. That is incredible, though not surprising. This collection of translations of comments made by Syriac Christians who were witnesses to the birth of Islam is an absolute gem. If you are interested in the origins of Islam and the history of Christian/Islamic relations, this book is a must-read. Michael Philip Penn had a brilliant idea when he decided to do these translations. His work will benefit everyone who wants to broaden their perspective on the earliest era of Islamic history. What Pliny the Younger, and Flavius Josephus, and Cornelius Tacitus, and Suetonius, and Lucian of Samosata are to the historical study of early Christianity, these Syriac writers are to the historical study of early Islam. What a delight, and a treasure, to have a collection of writings from such an early period of a world-changing movement from a perspective outside that movement! This collection of translations is by no means complete, according to the author. He thinks they are the most important and most informative. But they are a fraction of that "hundreds of pages" of comments on the movement started by Mohammed by Syriac Christians. It amazes me that there is such a wealth of information about Islam from outside Islam, and that it survived. Again, it is staggering when compared to the relatively gaunt (yet massively significant) writings about Christianity by non-Christian Greek and Latin writers. Please, by this book and donate it to your local library. This is a treasure chest of rare perspectives on world-changing events. If you only read ONE historical book in the next ten years, please read this one. Wouldn't you love to read a book by Iroquois authors who were writing about the Pilgrims? Wouldn't you love to read a book by Aztec authors who were writing about the Conquistadors? Wouldn't you love to read a book written by Canaanites in Jericho where they talked about the Hebrews and their God Yahweh? History is not always written by the victors. In this case, it is written by the subjugated and the conquered. That dynamic alone, apart from its relevance to early Christian/Islamic relations, makes this the rarest of the rare historical gems. It is amazing that this collection is just now coming out, at this point in history. How are all these things not already translated and compiled and widely distributed as are all the early non-Christian comments on Christianity? Evidently Islam has not been studied and combed over with as fine a comb as its fellow Abrahamic faith. I really do hope you read this book, whether you are Christian or Muslim or not a person of faith. Whatever your beliefs are, history is history; testimony is testimony. It may be true, it may be false. It may be honest, it may skew the facts. It may be impossible to tell whether or not it is a reliable testimony. But that is beside the point. The testimony must be heard. You decide whether they a villains or victims. You decide whether those who spoke are bigots or brothers. But please do listen to what they have to say. I wish some archeologist would dig up a library somewhere where there was this much talk (whether it's gossip or gospel) about the origins of Christianity, or of Buddhism, or of Hinduism, or Ba'al worship. If you have any interest in history or religion, this will be your favorite find of the year. Thank you, Professor Penn, for this wonderful contribution to historical literature.
