All you need!

I purchased this book due to having struggles in previous accounting classes. My class uses the Kieso book which tries so hard to impress you with wording that they fail to make it understandable. This is much cheaper, shorter, more efficient, and understandable by far. Best part, the chapters almost identically mirror the layout of the Kieso book so it's easy to follow along with what you learn in class.

Why isn't this series just made into a textbook?
The textbooks I had to use in my courses were almost comically confusing. Made no friggin sense and I would have been hopeless without this supplement.
The textbooks publishers should be taken out back and put down, ridiculous people.

This is the second SCHAUM'S Accounting book I have used. Really like the series. There are clear, step by step explanations that help you to understand the accounting cycle. The problems and answers are very good. I would recommend the series. I would like to see them update the material.

There's no padding on this lean audio: after the briefest of introductions, it cuts to the chase, presenting simple, concise techniques. Although the title is an overstatement, Lieberman does offer useful strategies rooted in basic human psychology and supported by numerous studies. For example, a person tends to like you more after he or she does you a favor, not the other way around. (Subconsciously, he assumes that he must like you, since he helped you.) Another tip: to get someone to find you attractive, set the first date in an environment of heightened physical arousal, like an amusement park. Good book.

Great book. I'm a reader and it's usually business and growth related. This book by David Lieberman was very good in that it taught how to communicate. When I first started reading it I got that "dirty" feeling like it was showing me how to manipulate but he goes on to explain that it's not about manipulation but a study on human behavior and reaction. He also talks about how wrong it is to manipulate people for self centered reasons, etc. So that made me feel a little better lol.

Beneficial, Practical but Common Knowledge

INTRO

The author's promise: "this book contains ... tactics governing human behavior that will let you outsmart, outthink, and outmaneuver... anyone, anyplace, anytime." After reading the book, I am not confident I can outsmart, out-think, or outmaneuver anyone at anyplace and anytime. Instead, I have a greater awareness of what psychological techniques are useful for certain types of situations. Most if not all of the techniques explained in the book are practical but common knowledge.

HOW TO GET PEOPLE TO LIKE YOU
--
The author suggests that you talk with someone when he is in a good mood if you want him to like you. Moreover, the author writes, "countless studies (and common sense) have established that we tend to like more those who like us." The tactics are to establish rapport by matching the person's gestures, rate of speech, and vocal patterns. I agree with the author, it is common sense (and common knowledge).

HOW TO MAKE A GREAT FIRST IMPRESSION?

You can then probe deeper by asking, "what would it take for you to love it?" Or you could ask, "how do you think I can make this room look even better?" It seems simple, and it is.

LEADERSHIP

Great leaders, the author states, must be able to identify with followers by appealing to their desires, needs, and wants. A great leader is also a humble individual. The style of great leaders is clarity, simplicity, and directness. Moreover, great leaders respect everyone. It is demonstrated by showing people how terrific they are and not how great the leader is. People will think you are charismatic when they feel that you make them feel important and special.

HOW TO CRITICIZE

The ability to criticize effectively without generating additional problems is an art and a science. I think the author offered practical and useful advice on this challenging and important ability.
1) Show you care, 2) do so in private, 3) preface criticism with a compliment), 4) criticize the act and not the person, 5) believe the person did the act unwittingly, 6) share responsibility for the act, 7) suggest a solution, and 8) tell the person he is not alone in the act. Additionally, a good amount of time should have passed from when the act occurred to when you criticize.

CONCLUSION
--
In closing, I did enjoy the book but found it to be less useful than I anticipated and what the author's claims were. Nevertheless, I think it was beneficial and I am happy I read it. I was expecting more. You will obtain practice suggestions on how to handle certain types of situations but most of the suggestions are common knowledge.

Self Help Book With Excellent Sections and Highly Manipulative Sections Best for Detecting When Somebody Tries to Manipulate You

I learned a lot and for that the book is worth 5 stars. Be warned however that some parts seem to advocate becoming flat out manipulative.

The manipulative parts can be extrapolated from the following example. The author suggests that when somebody helps you on a project, you can try to bind them to hanging in there until the project is done by saying: "what I appreciate about you is that when you help others, you always follow through to the end, making sure the project is completed." It occured to me that I've been manipulated this way many times, and now I probably won't fall for it again.

There are numerous responsible suggestions too. For example the notion that the best leaders are those that had leadership thrust upon them rather than seeking the role. It follows that one should try to be prepared to lead and wait until being recruited into a leadership role. Of course this won't apply to all leadership situations, but it is good advice.

One thing I liked about the author was his emphasis on helping others to feel powerful. We don't help our own causes by being arrogant. Leiberman says that we should always try to restore balance in our relationships, not trying to gain without giving something back.

Leiberman understands a lot about psychology and applies this knowledge in this book. I think anybody can learn a lot from this book, justifying its cost.

Catchy & Intuitive.

Most certainly will revisit this book because it was very nice. Steven Johnson gives a great analysis of where some of the best ideas came from. The main reason I give this 5 stars is for his strong conclusion as well as his appendix which is almost like a cheat code for a reader because it leaves you with a timeline for some of the greatest ideas ever. This is a game changer because this is the kind of book that pushes you to pursue more knowledge and definitely encourages further reading and research.

I would definitely recommend this book to wantrapreneurs and entrepreneurs alike because it may teach the entrepreneur to keep persisting and to remain patient while doing so, and the wantrapreneur may finally receive that last nudge towards entrepreneurship from this book.

Great Read on the Nature of Creativity and Ideas

"Where Good Ideas come From" by Steven Johnson was given to me as a Christmas gift by someone who knows I love reading about how ideas originate and where common things we use today originated. It was not exactly what I expected, but still very good. It was less about individual case studies and more about ideas in general, and how a setting can effect ideas and implementation. A very interesting read and leaves you with a lot to take away from it. There is also an index of important inventions and when they were invented and by who in the back which was an interesting thing to look through as well.

Overall, the book was written at a very high level when it comes to Where Good Ideas Come From, which was an interesting approach with examples thrown in for good measure. I am very glad I received and read this book, even if it wasn't what I expected.

Another Home Run!

I purchased this book after enjoying his earlier work so much, "How we Got To Now." And it did not disappoint. The earlier book gave me a greater appreciation for all the everyday stuff we take for granted (steel, glass, concrete, etc) and this one showed the power of cross-fertilization in solving problems. Printing was already being used but Gutenberg's idea of implementing the wine press used in Germany took it to another level.

He is not shy in contrasting this shared knowledge with the "silo-building" of the FBI that continues to fail our country by isolating key information from other agencies like the CIA. I remember reading after 9/11 that the failures of sharing vital information of national security was to be fixed by the creation of Homeland Security. Then the bombing at the Boston Marathon occurs and the investigation shows "silo-building" was again in play between the the CIA and the FBI,

At least the folks in the private sector understand the value of creative thinking.

An extremely important book

With "The Healing Choice," Candace De Puy and Dana Dovitch have made a much needed and extremely important contribution to the fields of psychology and womens' health. I recently re-read this book in preparation for working with a young woman who was struggling to heal from the emotional impact of having an abortion under traumatic circumstances. It was incredibly helpful, both to me and to the patient, herself. Besides providing solid information, the personal stories and insights of a wide range of women, and numerous exercises that deal with specific issues along the path to recovery, this book is full of compassion. And it is just as relevent today as it was when it was first published.

A must read for anyone dealing with abortion.

I bought this for a family member who was experiencing long term guilt after having an abortion at a young age. I read it first to make sure it was not about condemnation and forgiveness. This book give a human rather than a religious perspective of abortion. It helped me to understand what my relative was going through and she seemed to let go of the guilt after reading this book.

Last Flight Out. Key West. A State of Mind. This book (pamphlet) has all the makings of a fun book to purchase for your flight home from Key West. Picture of a palm tree. Maybe a book to channel your inner desire to pick-up from your 9-5 and move to Key West. It's not. Sure, if you read the 'about the author' and thumb through a few pages you'll see the author is a Vietnam vet. So you'd rightfully expect maybe a few war stories weaved into this island theme book. Instead, this book reads like Platoon meets the Deer Hunter meets Margaritaville. Which is fine. The author is a Vet and he is entitled to write whatever the hell he wants. But don't push this book in every Key West gift shop and market it as a state of mind book when it clearly is not. It's one man's account of his Army service and tours in Vietnam which ultimately lead him to Key West. Great. I only finished it because, well, I was destined to see where this guy ended up, other than Key West. And my father is a Vietnam Veteran, which leads me to the second part of my review.

I'm actually probably in the 1% of people who saw this book, recognized it's Vietnam stories and themes, along with the Key West state of mind, and thought - this book is perfect. It's a win-win. Cause there are only so many Nam books and this would be a fun read. Let me first say, Clay, if you read this - that I know freedom isn't free. I have the utmost amount of respect for you and every other Veteran, past or present. America is forever in debt to you all your for your service. The comrades you lost, the sacrifices, the mental and emotional scars you still carry with yourself to this day. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. But I'm afraid I simply cannot support the messages of your book. I found it to be the most insulting, self-serving blather that I have ever read. Your 'he won't talk about it' bit is insulting to not only Veterans, who may or may not fall into one of your 4 subcategories, but to their families. It's as if you're saying, look at me, I'm a REAL Veteran! Not one of those pretend Vets with the trucker cap and license plate holder. I got the scars to prove it! Meanwhile, you make every other Veteran who wasn't a combat Veteran out to be something less than you. Because they don't have the same stories, and didn't 'fire a shot', they can't walk around as proudly as you. Hey, maybe you know something that I don't. Well, I'm actually positive you know a hell of a lot more than me. Which is why I would think you know better than to make some sweeping generalizations of the entire Vietnam Veteran population. Those who you see 'sitting in alleys and public parks drinking wine out of paper bags' couldn't really be combat vets? Na. My father, who has bronze stars and a combat infantryman badge, might not have spoken much to me about it because 'some of them want to portray they're a combat veteran. If they talk about something they didn't experience, the truth might come out'. Really Clay? What gives you the right? Again, this is only one reader's opinion, but if I was a Vet and I came into your store, I'd ask you why you're entitled to denigrate the capacity of another Vet's service and wrap yourself so proudly in the flag because you were there and you killed people. Sorry man. That sounds harsh, I know. My father made the same sacrifices as you. And I don't think he deserves to be lumped into those 4 subcategories of Vets, whether he was the deadliest sniper of the War, or if he drove a Jeep in circles around Saigon.

As for the rest of your book, you had some touching stories. Your passages about the emotional battles you fought struck me particularly hard. Because my father, now in his mid 60s, has waged those same battles ever since he returned to American soil. I know this for a fact. Now, I wouldn't dare put words into his mouth, or attempt to express those hardships in my own context because, as I'm sure you so eloquently put somewhere in this book, I'm not qualified to. But my father has hidden his demons from others around him for most of his entire adult life. Except he never got the help you did. Nope. He desperately needed it. But he never got it. I wish he did. My eyes were completely tear filled when I read some sections of this book. Not because I thought of you and your sacrifices. Because I thought of my father and how I wish I could have helped him. The pain I saw everyday in eyes. I wish I could have made it go away. If he got the same help you did, maybe things would be different between me and him. After all, since you know everything, you'd know what a psychological toll things like this can take on children. Like me. And what happens when they turn into adults. How they realize there was something missing all those years and they'll never get a chance to get it back.

Now, maybe it's because I've only recently started experiencing these severe shortcomings in my life that motivated me to write this review. Clay, I guess me picking up your book was fate. I'm a successful, middle-aged adult whose life is crumbling around them. Never put on a uniform. Never fired a shot. It's too late to go back in time when I was five years old, or for the rest of my life, to have a father who wasn't a shell of himself.

My dad hardly ever takes credit for his service. He doesn't have a Nam license plate. He doesn't wear fatigues to the grocery store. He's told me some stories that I know only scratch the service. Buddies dying around him. Survival. Hot LZs. And I've seen the pictures. Maybe I'll never know if he fired a shot. I doubt at this point in my life I'll ever find out. Unless I see his 18 year old face in a combat scene in a newly released History channel documentary. Then I'd be able to properly classify him into your Vet dataset and only then would I be able to know that my father was a Hero. The truth is, I don't care either way. About the Author
John Ridley is the Malcolm McCallum Chair of Economic Geology at Colorado State University where he has taught ore deposit geology and field geology for the past seven years. His earlier academic positions spanned three other continents, with positions at universities in Australia, Switzerland and Zimbabwe, and over his career he has taught courses in geochemistry, petrology and structural geology. Professor Ridley has published over seventy articles in refereed journals and books, in addition to geological maps and reports for companies and groups within the mining and minerals industries.

Very well executed

A clear and concise up-to-date explanation of ore types and geochemical formation processes. The author carefully organizes and summarizes information without delving too far into poorly-supported alternatives, yet does not fail to mention secondary factors that may play a role. The result is a text full of relevant, organized information, and very little of the tedium that crops up somewhere in most texts. Professor Ridley also eschews informative geochemical diagrams like those showing stability of iron and manganese sulfides, oxides, and carbonates, which might be considered a fault; but these diagrams require a lot of expert interpretation and a grasp of relevance to actual contexts so the author provides the interpretation instead. Even the descriptions and maps of actual deposits around the world appear to have been carefully filtered to best exemplify the processes (rather than simply using the most thoroughly studied locations).

Outstanding text on Ore Formations.

This is a very comprehensive book on ore formations. The sections on hydrothermal processes is exceptional and exhaustive. While well written, to fully gain the knowledge contained, it has to read several times. There is a lot of information presented which takes a bit of effort to absorb. This is a must read for anyone trying to understand the genesis and morphology of economic minerals.

Taking a well-worn genre—flesh-eating zombies overrun the world and the unlucky surviving humans must deal with the gruesome aftermath—and approaching it from a purely character-driven point of view propels this series into the spotlight from out of nowhere. This collection of the first six issues of the ongoing series opens with police officer Rick Grimes awakening from a gunshot-induced coma. From here, he's immediately dragged into a world where dangerous revenants are shambling amok without any sort of an explanation. From the moment Grimes comes to, it's a harrowing battle to avoid hordes of decomposing zombies and a hope-against-all-odds search for his missing family. Grimes makes his way to Atlanta, the nearest large city where there may be other living people, and events take several unexpected turns upon his arrival, as he meets up with a rural encampment of survivors. Of course, as in recent hit movies 28 Days Later... and Dawn of the Dead, the last humans may turn out to be as much a danger as the zombies. Forceful scripting that gives the book a strong grounding in reality, crisp b&w artwork, a shocking final sequence and brisk, gory proceedings elevate this book from the trash heap of pedestrian horror comics.

The Walking Dead, Vol. 1: Days Gone Bye

I'm a big fan of the tv show, The Walking Dead, so I was curious to see how the comics are. So far, from reading this first comic, the show stays pretty close to it. This first installment ends with Shane's death and if I remember correctly, that was how season 2 of the tv show ended. There's a few characters in the comic that aren't in the tv series, but from what I see the show pretty much follows the comic. So far, anyway because I have heard the two are different.

However, I think the tv show and the actors truly bring these characters to life. Rick Grimes is one of my favorite characters, ever, and to see his character change over these four seasons has really been one of my favorite aspects of the story. Actor Andrew Lincoln is truly wonderful in this role and does an amazing job. Creator Robert Kirkman promises that we will know what happens to Rick in the end, there will be no wondering.

I think the comics are a nice complimentary reading for fans of The Walking Dead series. The illustrations are pretty neat, I like how they capture the grim reality of what is going on in this post apocalyptic world. I'm a fan of zombie stories because I feel like it's interesting to see what such a world can do to people, and how it can change them. The zombies aren't the scariest part, the people are. It's human nature to want to survive, but at what cost?

Robert Kirkman paints a dark and difficult new world here in a realistic and intriguing way. What I really want to get my hands on are the Walking Dead books, starting with the The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor, also written by Kirkman.

This was a gift for a nephew who loved the series on TV. So I thought he would like this. I didn't read it, so I don't know if there is any sexual content. I'm sure there is violence in it. I would find it odd if there wasn't based on the type of comics it is. My son has read them and he said there was violence that was graphic, and no sexual content. He thinks it is a gift that is appropriate for my nephew who loves the series. Because the TV series doesn't follow the comics exactly it should make it interesting to read, to see where it differs.

Ok... I am a walking dead TV show fan. Have watched all along and had never, before now, seen the comic. I took the "bait" and tried this one (#1)... good marketing idea really... cause now I HAVE to get the rest. If you're a dead fan you'll love them. Wasn't sure I would like the "comic" book thing, but honestly it's awesome. Especially if you were into them as a kid... I used read the vampire, werewolf, etc... type. Not a fan of the "super hero" variety. These really are fun and interesting even if you've already seen the TV show. I was surprised. I say, try one.
