A Great Book to Understand Bacteria

I used this book in a course by the same name and it was a helpful source to read. It gives good explanations that sometimes are a little too short. I still use this book and it is a great place to jump off from when trying to understand a topic. One problem is that somtimes it gets too much into the biochemical steps and falls away from the concepts of the pathway. But all in all, it is a helpful book if this is your field or if you want to start and understand bacteria from a entire bacteria level and not just one gene at a time. The parts on genetics and genetic regulation of systems (focusing on transcriptional regulation) are also great. It is due for an update though.

Simpson trial hadn't even been made when the first O.J. book--the defendant's own, I Want to Tell You--hit the stands, and the ink wasn't even dry on newspaper accounts of the jury's verdict when Johnnie Cochran, Christopher Darden, Mark Fuhrman, members of the Brown and Goldman families, detectives concerned with the case, and even journalists covering the trial hurried into the fray with their own tell-all versions of this latest "trial of the century." So perhaps Marcia Clark, the chief prosecutor in the Simpson case, is a little late to the dance with her offering, Without a Doubt, cowritten with Teresa Carpenter. After all, what more is there to say? Plenty, according to Clark.

In Without a Doubt Clark painstakingly recounts the trial proceedings, from jury selection to final summation, and concludes that nothing could have saved her case, given the prominent role of race in the defense's strategy and the hostile jury who heard it. In Clark's opinion, the prosecution's mountain of evidence should have convicted Simpson 20 times over; that it did not, she says, attests to a judicial system wracked by race and overly impressed by celebrity. Amidst war stories from the trial, Marcia Clark sprinkles plenty of details about her private life before and after O.J., from a teenage rape to her ex-husband's custody suit. There must be at least a hundred books on the O.J. Simpson case available. Between those written before and during the trial and those written by the major players after, the Simpson case is surely one of the most analyzed cases ever tried. However, one voice had not been heard: that of the lone woman attorney in the courtroom. Clark not only was lead prosecutor for the Simpson case, she also became one of the most recognized people in America. Here Clark talks not only about the Simpson case but about her life before, during, and after trying the "case of the century." She discusses her childhood, much of which was spent following her scientist father around the country from job to job, how she became a lawyer, and her move from the defense to the prosecution. During the analysis of the Simpson case she takes on her critics, telling how she knew she could never win. She does note the errors made by the police and criminalists as well as those made by her cocounsel Chris Darden. She expresses frustration with "The Dream Team," but she is most angry with Judge Lance Ito, whom she says let celebrity get in the way of justice and made it impossible to get a fair hearing. She notes that race did play a role in this case, but celebrity was just as important. Clark lets us see behind the scenes as she dealt with the tabloid stories, the custody fight over her children, and the stress of trying to deal with her own celebrity. Great Read! I love true crime but many books ...

Great Read! I love true crime but many books get so bogged down in detail or are just not presented in an organized/interesting way. Though I watched almost every moment of the televised trial I was still curious as to what happened behind the scenes. I liked Marcia Clark and had a lot of respect for her as a smart and dedicated attorney. I felt the press was very unfair to her, especially the way they scrutinized her personally. No one cared if the pompous F. L. Bailey was sporting a new suit or the ever sleek Johnny Cochran had a haircut and manicure before court that day but Marcia Clark couldn't change a hair without being scrutinized as to why and what had happened to bring on that change. It was ridiculous and had nothing to do with the trial. In any case I wasn't sure how interesting the book would be as it was possibly going to have a lot legal jargon that becomes boring to me fairly fast. Not so in this book. I was into it from beginning to end. I was amazed at how she was able to condense such an overwhelming amount of information into a cohesive and easy flowing read. She kept the timeline on track as well and told the main points of the story extremely well. I was never bored and I was not left with a longing for more information. In my opinion she stated the facts, good and bad ones, very honestly and even though she lost the verdict she did not lose the case. Everyone who really evaluated the evidence presented had to believe that Simpson was guilty. That was thanks to Marcia Clark and her team. And best of all, she did no whining and opining over the verdict. She picked up her life and went on to better things. She really came through then and again with this book. I highly recommend.

A book you won't want to put down

Applause to Marcia Clark for all she sacrificed in her attempt to bring justice to its knees. I learned so much about the trial as well as the system from reading this book that wasn't covered in the press or in the teleplay. There is nothing she or any other DA could have done to bring in a different verdict. The average juror is incapable of unbiased thinking in its truest sense as well as most of them having no real comprehension of the law. Further, you can not convince me that the average person is not influenced by the largess of celebrity. It is unreasonable to think any other way. The jury system is in dire need of repair. It is hopelessly broken. Never feel guilty Marcia. You did a brilliant job.

Eye opening read.

I was surprised how much I enjoyed this book. I knew the story, recognised the faces, but to go behind the Hollywood headlines and read the human aspect of prosecuting this trial was fascinating. I can't imagine the frustration of knowing you have the evidence to win this case but watching it slip away due to many other, almost ridiculous, factors. The impact that working on this trial had on the personal lives and health of the prosecutors was an eye opener, something you never really stop to consider.

I would highly recommend this book. Well written, interesting story, good flow, no lulls.

I loved this series of books when I read them 20 years ago, was looking for an easy entertaining read and these fit the bill loved the characters and story line, I do a lot of Traveling and wanted some more books on Disk to pass my time, had forgotten how much I liked these books, Simple pleasures simple minds what can I say, I was entertained and able to escape this world for a few hours.

I was lent the book "Magic Kingdom for Sale" while on a vacation, I could not put it down. I enjoyed it so much that I got my own Book in paperback and Kindle versions. I was a little skeptical about the CD version since I do not always like the voice or inflections of the reader but I took a chance when ordering this. I am pleasantly surprised, this is a nice change of pace being able to listen to this on my way to work each day and actually looking forward to continuing the saga. I agree with other posts about the story when read in a whisper, you need to turn up the volume to hear what is being said, especially if playing in the built in car CD.

good stories. very good reader. lots of cd's.

dick hill has a very good voice and does not get over dramatic. some readers detract from a story when they get carried away--but not hill. i especially enjoyed everytime he spoke as strabo, the dragon. since i have read terry brooks, i expected that i would like the stories. with 5 books and many, many hours of listening in this package, you had to have a good reader--hill was very good.

i will let other people debate which of brooks' series is best (yes, i read the shannara series). i am glad that this package was available to take me to landover for the many hours i drive all over. as exciting as counting cows or the alphabet game may be, listening to good stories such as these made the miles pass much more quickly.
