The Innovator's DNA: Mastering the Five Skills of Disruptive Innovators, by Jeff Dyer, Hal Gregersen, Clayton M. Christensen

A new classic, cited by leaders and media around the globe as a highly recommended read for anyone interested in innovation.

In The Innovator’s DNA, authors Jeffrey Dyer, Hal Gregersen, and bestselling author Clayton Christensen (The Innovator’s Dilemma, The Innovator’s Solution, How Will You Measure Your Life?) build on what we know about disruptive innovation to show how individuals can develop the skills necessary to move progressively from idea to impact.

By identifying behaviors of the world’s best innovators—from leaders at Amazon and Apple to those at Google, Skype, and Virgin Group—the authors outline five discovery skills that distinguish innovative entrepreneurs and executives from ordinary managers: Associating, Questioning, Observing, Networking, and Experimenting.

Once you master these competencies (the authors provide a self-assessment for rating your own innovator’s DNA), the authors explain how to generate ideas, collaborate to implement them, and build innovation skills throughout the organization to result in a competitive edge. This innovation advantage will translate into a premium in your company’s stock price—an innovation premium—which is possible only by building the code for innovation right into your organization’s people, processes, and guiding philosophies.

Practical and provocative, The Innovator’s DNA is an essential resource for individuals and teams who want to strengthen their innovative prowess.

Inspiring and well-written
By Amazon Customer
This is a very interesting book written by some Harvard profs. They did a large national survey of innovative businesses and their leaders. The book posits that innovative people follow five skills: associating, questioning, observing, networking, and experimenting. These skills can be found at the individual or organizational level. The idea is that most people have these skills in their DNA and can bring them out with some practice. There are a lot of interesting and inspiring examples like Steve Jobs and Jeff Bezos. Although this book seems like a self-help type book with a lot of hype, it has an academic underpinning. Any organization that is interested in promoting innovation could benefit from encouraging these 5 skills. If you are interested in innovation or creativity in business or any organization that produces something, you will like this book. The books is a little distracting to read because it has sidebars all through it giving interesting examples that break up reading concentration. Aside from that, it is a well-written book that is easy and enjoyable to read. I enjoyed the book greatly and found it to be inspiring.

The Innovator's DNA - Disruptive Research - Disruptive Writing

A Politically Correct Status Quo

It is politically correct in management circles to say that you are "results oriented" or that you "drive for results" in your organization.

The status quo in business schools is to indoctrinate students in the delivery skills of analyzing, planning, detail-oriented implementing, and disciplined executing.

This book and the research upon which it is based disrupts that politically correct status quo.

Clayton Christensen has spent close to two decades creating the research, conceptual, and application foundation of the disruptive innovation body of knowledge. He has been working for more than 8 years with Jeff Dyer and Hal Gregersen, both gifted researchers, teachers, and consultants in their own right, on this project. These guys are a disruptive "dream team" of contributors.

This book articulates an extension of the disruptive innovation body of knowledge that clearly describes an individual profile of the disruptive innovator and an organizational profile of an organization that makes disruptive innovation happen.

So what makes this book disruptive?

The first thing is timing. It arrives on the scene at a time when innovation is one of the most critical components of a solution to our global financial and organizational mess. If we are to get out of our morass of debt and sluggish growth and respond to the continually emerging challenges of a burgeoning global society it will ride on the backs and wings of innovation. The status quo must be disrupted for us to survive and thrive!

Second is the audacity of the core models. The authors claim that innovation can be learned at both the individual and organizational level. Individuals can increase their ability to discover (Discovery Quotient - DQ) and learn to be more innovative. They cite the four specific behavioral skills of asking questions, engaging in observations, networking with people who have a different point of view, and experimenting to figure out what can work as the common elements of what innovators do. They also identify the cognitive skill of associational thinking, the ability to find connections between ideas that do not seem to be related to each other, as the connection between the behavioral skills and the generation of ideas. They extend their claim that the innovation competency can be learned to the organizational domain by saying that organizations can become more innovative through developing and leading people, designing and implementing processes, and advocating and living by philosophies that support innovation. These two arguments stand in stark contrast to the beliefs and practices of a vast majority of leaders and institutions.

(For a diagram of the Model see [...])

'And all of this is built upon the third source of disruption: research. Their work is based on well-founded research into the "DNA" of the world's leading innovators and the world's most innovative organizations. The authors conducted nearly 100 interviews of world class innovators and their colleagues to get at the heart of what innovators do. They also interviewed and surveyed executives who are not innovators. (Their survey data base has over 5000 respondents in it.) So they have been able to compare and contrast the two populations to more clearly see what it takes to effectively innovate.

They have also done research on business results attributable to innovation. Collaborating with HOLT (a division of Credit Suisse) they were able to craft a measurement called the "innovation premium." This measure identifies if an organization's market capitalization can be accounted for by existing cash flows or if there is an innovation influence on the stock price. By using this measure, they have been able to clearly and objectively identify which organizations are benefiting from innovation.

Yet to Explore

The tension in the balance of influence and power between the leaders with predominantly "Discovery" or "Delivery" mindsets is an area that has yet to be explored. If the premises of this book are sound, and I believe they are, we need to figure out how to manage that tension and balance in order to generate, incubate, and strengthen innovative ideas as we bring them to full fruition in the marketplace. Great ideas that are not delivered upon are simply recreational pursuits that do not build great people, great institutions, and great societies. So there is work yet to do.

Invest Your Time and Effort

This book makes a significant contribution to both the disruptive innovation body of knowledge and the evolving body of practice on innovating disruptively. It is well worth reading, pondering, and acting upon.

Innovation Penta-Helix
By Steve Gladis
[[VIDEOID:mo3GZH8KU81TKYY]]Innovation is literally the lifeblood of our global economy. In fact, a recent IBM poll of fifteen hundred CEOs identified creativity as the number-one "leadership competency" of the future. Here's the focus question of the research for this book: Where do disruptive business models come from? Standing on the shoulders of research in the field, including Christensen's works, The Innovator's Dilemma and The Innovator's Solution, this new book's primary purpose was to uncover the origins of innovative, disruptive business ideas. Ultimately, the goal was to explore the minds of innovate leaders and extract a formula for innovative success--what made them "think different" as Steve Jobs extolled. Indeed, the authors uncovered five actions/behaviors that innovators engaged in regularly: Questioning, Associating, Observing, Networking, and Experimenting--triggering innovative thinking to deliver new businesses, products, services, or processes. [My mnemonic to remember these five activities is Q&A ONE.] This idea of a behavior-based model bodes well for us all. In short, modify behavior and change your level of disruptive innovation. The authors also discuss balancing discovery with delivery skills in proportion to the staff of the company.

Against Our Better Judgment: The Hidden History of How the U.S. Was Used to Create Israel, by Alison Weir

"Prodigiously documented... Alison Weir must be highly commended for throwing such a brilliantly hard light on the relationship between the United States and Israel. I hope this marvelous book gets all the attention it deserves." - Ambassador Andrew Killgore, Publisher, Washington Report on Middle East Affairs.

Soon after WWII, US statesman Dean Acheson warned that creating Israel on land already inhabited by Palestinians would "imperil" both American and all Western interests in the region. Despite warnings such as this one, President Truman supported establishing a Jewish state on land primarily inhabited by Muslims and Christians.

Few Americans today are aware that US support enabled the creation of modern Israel. Even fewer know that US politicians pushed this policy over the forceful objections of top diplomatic and military experts.

As this work demonstrates, these politicians were bombarded by a massive pro-Israel lobbying effort that ranged from well-funded and very public Zionist organizations to an "elitist secret society" whose members included Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis.

AGAINST OUR BETTER JUDGMENT brings together meticulously sourced evidence to illuminate a reality that differs starkly from the prevailing narrative. It provides a clear view of the history that is key to understanding one of the most critically important political issues of our day.

Damn the Hasbara, Full speed ahead
By James Robinson
Extraordinarily well researched book; well structured and convincing, Most astounding is how the Zionist charade for so many decades was so successful. I have to confess that 30 years ago my sympathies rested exclusively with Israel, probably as a result of how the Palestinian issue was portrayed on TV. If asked back then to conjure the image of a Palestinian in my mind's eye, the image would have been of a twenty something male, hair shaggy, unkempt, unshaven, face distorted in anger, screaming some unintelligible epitaphs, behind him a burning American flag in a rubble strewn street. This was, of course the image fed endlessly to me.
The internet has shed the scales from my eyes. Weir's book chronicles the absolute deception that has plagued American thinking. Thank you, Allison

Several years after posting my review, I found that my modest posting has attracted , by far, the most comments. That was what I expected. I suppose you might say, I engineered it. I used the word "Hasbara" in the title and as I suspected the key word drew an army of, well....Hasbara. The Hasbara community is well stepped in the art of duplicity as evidenced by the comments posted in response. The internet will be your undoing as it is not subject to the coercion and manipulation you wield upon the once powerful MSM

Must must must read - Get the facts. You have been lied to for much too long.
By A.Y.O.
Excellent book. Well documented. Every American should read this to understand how s/he has been manipulated to create and continue to support an oppressive, racist country called Israel at the expense of the indigenous peoples in Palestine. What is important to note is that this book is not only about the past, although it documents how Israel was founded based on the lies fed to the American public starting about a century ago. It is also about the present - it documents and gives examples of the Zionist propaganda machine tactics, which is as active as ever, that resorts to financial extortion, personal and career assassination against any person or institution that dares to speak the truth about Palestine and Israel... how everyone is made afraid to be called an anti-Semite for simply criticizing the policies of a country - Israel.

Is it then any surprise that the biggest purporters and supporters of Islamophobia today are virulent Zionists? Muslims are being "otherized" and "dehumanized" at large through the media and by the so called "Islamic experts" that are all funded by Zionists (or are themselves openly Zionists in many cases). This phobia that is being created in the minds of the Americans is there to serve Zionist interests in that it helps dehumanize the Palestinians and their cause for justice. Now, the book does not get into this current political climate, however, by showing us the goals and the tactics of the very powerful Zionist establishment, it nonetheless helps us see the current reality of the Americans once again being manipulated - this time through tactics of fear such as Islamophobia.

Zionism and its agenda continues to hurt world peace and American interests, and this book shows how we got into it all...

Need I add that Israel is in support of al-Qaida (Netanyahu visiting al-Qaida fighters being tested in Israeli hospitals did make it to the Western press, but not to the front pages - a travesty! - of course..). If ISIS is the most virulent of al-Qaida fighters morphed into the next level of violence, should we be surprised if Israel is behind it, too? And secondly, Israel's current agenda is having the US fight Iran. That'll be the ultimate destabilization of the Middle East and the decimation of the only country in its neighborhood left that rivals/does not recognize Israel. How much longer does the U.S.A have to do Israel's dirty work? send its own sons and daughters to death? channel the sweat of its citizens, their hard earned tax money to Israel ( which is a developed nation itself)? Why do we send billions to Israel every year? If only Americans knew!!! We still don't.

A DIFFERENT AND DISCOMFORTING NARRATIVE
By mackenzie jones
I too was a media-savvy person and believed the talking points of the American corporate press and was on board with our Middle East policy. However. the brutality of the attack on Gaza last summer compelled me to dig deeper. I could not understand how a people who believe they are God’s chosen people and who suffered unspeakable brutality during the Holocaust, could wreak such death and destruction on a suppressed people with no Army, no Navy and no Air Force and who had nothing at all to do with the Holocaust..
I started by Googling words like Belfour Declaration, the Irgun, the Nakba, the Stern Gang, King David Hotel, Plan Dalet, “mowing the lawn” and USS Liberty, to mention just a few. A new narrative started to emerge. It was a narrative that was very discomforting and at odds with what I had so firmly believed.
Along the way I came across this book, which succinctly summarized and documented all I had discovered by Googling individual terms.
If you have a hard time believing what is written in this book do your own research.
The Zionist goal is to seize as much Palestinian land as possible even if it required the extermination of the Palestinians people on that land—Plan Dalet. It appears that Israel was born of death and destruction by Zionist terrorist groups—an inconvenient and discomforting truth.
Albert Einstein was so incensed by this travesty, he wrote a letter to the NYT in which he presciently warned us against the Zionist fascists. ( You can read it online.) This is a " must read" book for those interested in understanding why we give Israel over 3 billion dollars a year in military aid..
