To whet our appetites and make waiting for the book's arrival a little easier, Amazon Romance expert Alyssa Morris spoke with Day about what’s next for Gideon and Eva, her upcoming collaboration with Harlequin and Cosmopolitan, her all-time favorite romance novels, and much more.

Alyssa Morris: Now that you’ve had a bit of time to absorb the success of Bared to You, does it feel real? Or are you still surprised?

Sylvia Day: I'm still surprised! I’m glad I’m a veteran and that I’ve been publishing for close to 10 years, so I had some experience under my belt as far as dealing with it. But on the other hand, there’s no way to anticipate writing something that becomes a global phenomenon, you know. I don’t know about other writers--I didn’t even dream about anything like that. I always figured that it just happened to the Stephenie Meyers and J.K. Rowlings of the world. So, yeah, I don’t think I’ll ever get over being surprised that I had a series that struck such a chord.

AM: It just hit such a moment in our culture, where all of a sudden this is what everyone wants to be reading. It’s an interesting confluence.

SD: Right. We always talk about that, about right book, right time. Random House released Fifty Shades on the same day I self-published Bared to You, so talk about the right timing. Just… wow!

AM: Do you have a favorite moment in the Crossfire series so far?

SD: You know, I really loved the weekend that Gideon and Eva spent in the Outer Banks. These poor guys. When they’re alone, they’re fine. Life is perfect when they’re alone. Unfortunately, they don’t get a lot of time alone. [Laughs] So I just love that. I love seeing them together away from all of the distractions and intrusions and everything else that’s going wrong in their lives.

I can’t talk too much about Entwined with You because it’s not out yet. And that’s so hard, because I so want to talk tabout it! But there’s more alone time with Gideon and Eva as we move forward in the series and they grow stronger, so I’m really enjoying that as a writer.

First book I ever felt bad about reading, major disappointment!

So disappointed that this trilogy is no longer a trilogy, but a series. I feel completely deceived and not happy that there was no advance warning. When you pay 9.99 for a book and read it with the expectation that you'll read the conclusion, and hopefully a happy ending, there is such a sense of frustration to find out it continues...unnecessarily! I liked Eva and Gideon's story as the MAIN characters. However this book does not focus on them, instead the secondary characters are what the the author is trying to develop in the 3rd book to prolong the series, and make more money. The storyline with Brett Kline seems weak and only plays out in a couple of spots in the 2nd and 3rd book, making it seem like his character and storyline is a filler. Same goes for Megumi, the receptionist where Eva works. The worst is the new intern Will. His character is a complete joke as they talk about what he's eating and craving...WHO CARES? There were a lot of times I read the book and felt like Eva just observed random things happening throughout her day that had no relevance to the storyline, other than to take up space on paper.

While I don't want to knock the author since it is obvious she is capable of writing good material, it's hard not to. Whether she decided to prolong the story for profits, or the publishing house asked her to do it, the bottom line is she went along with it. Out of respect for her work and her loyal readers it should have never been considered. Quality over quantity! The one POSITIVE for me is that after I read this I was so frustrated I had to read something else to take my mind off my disappointment. What I found was my justification for my review on this book and my thoughts about the author. I came across a book called Beauty from Pain by Georgia Cates. This book was followed by a sequel called Beauty from Surrender. Both books were wonderful and the icing on the cake came at the end of the second book. The author added notes that she had received so many requests to add a third book and continue Laurelyn and Jack's story (the main characters). However, she felt good about where their story had ended and decided to end it at the second book. She included that she may write a novella to please all the readers that requested a third book, but also wanted to please the people that loved where the story ended. This is where Sylvia Day could take some notes. Integrity over ambition or profits!

Never Thought I'd Rate This Series So Low

I'm sure I have been more disappointed before but I can't remember when. I loved "Bared." I was okay with "Reflected" but I am downright insulted with "Entwined." This was the worst of the series and that's really saying something when you consider how mediocre "Reflected" was.

This, I don't even want to call it a book; letters on paper lacked a plot, progression, romance, or even drama. It read like a porn script with little, meaningless, boring conversation thrown in the middle of who cares sex scenes. There wasn't anything romantic about Gideon and Eva's relationship in this book. Eva appears to have reverted back to a teenage nympho and Gideon has become nothing more than a spoiled little rich kid wanting what he wants when he wants it.

Every character in this book lack communication skills and used raunchy, uninspired sex to compensate. By the 50% mark I couldn't have cared less if Eva and Gideon got together or not because I had grown to not like either of them. This was so much filler and trying to create problems for the series to continue and it all came off very contrived. Not to mention, this was supposed to be Gideon's story.. the man who has been having violent nightmares for the past two books and then the big reveal of the who and what happened is so meh inducing even the characters didn't spend more than a couple of sentences talking about it.

Where was the drama, the excitement, the romance, the complexity that made these characters so great in "Bared?" I can't believe a book that was delayed six months ended up reading so rushed and phoned in. I cannot in all honesty recommend this book and to be perfectly honest I also returned it like many other reviewers. There's no way I'm giving up my hard earned $10 bucks for a low budget porn script. I'm done with this series.

Sylvia Day... either you've screwed yourself or your publisher has screwed you...

Finally I get my say on this book... I've finished reading and I have to agree with alot of other disappointed folks that this book really leaves a lot to be desired for the $10 bucks I paid for it. Geez... it might not have been so bad if I didn't feel so price gouged for what I got. Okay... I LOVE the way Sylvia Day writes... that's why I fell in love with books 1&2. And this one had excellent moments of top notch writing. But the content of the writing is what really was lacking in this story and that's because "someone" has decided to stretch this story into FIVE books instead of what a trilogy really means. (okay enough of that since everyone has commented on it but it did make me mad). Here's what I HATED about this book:

1. Nothing is resolved or revealed about Gideon and his past. I mean come on Sylvia...give us something about why he has nightmares and is the way he is. This is book three of the story for crying out loud and still nothing to explain his weird behaviors.
2. Gideon is really "dark" in this novel. The way he treats Eva is darker, his acts of sex with Eva are darker(really STRONG dominant/submissive behavior in this book), his dealings with secondary characters are darker... it was kind of creepy and I didn't care for this very much... and Eva just lays back and takes it. He wasn't the Gideon that I thought I came to know and love in Bks 1&2.
3. Not a lot of substance in the story plot and just extra added "stuff" that was put in for filler. The whole Brett relationship with Eva... too much. Megumi's whole back story... unnecessary.

I'm not sure if I'll continue reading this story... I WILL NOT if the price stays the same because book 4 might be just the same as book 3. Also if it takes 8 months to release.... Well then forget it. There are way better authors writing GREAT novels for A LOT LESS MONEY. I'm giving this book TWO STARS because I'm applauding her excellent writing style... however, I'm so disappointed in you Sylvia Day for whatever choices you made concerning this TRILOGY!!!!!

I don't believe much of what Robert Kiyosaki says.

I can't believe I'm the only one that caught Kiyosaki's terrible error in his options story fabrication. He claims he sold a $40 put option on a $45 stock for $5 share. He's off by about a factor of 10 on that option value. He also seems to have a misunderstanding of how options are valued. He apparently believes that options are valued based on future stock price speculation which is mostly innaccurate. Options are supply/demand based but are mostly valued by their distance from the current underlying share value and the length of time until expiration. The future stock value speculation is already represented by the current share value. This is a big credibility killer in my book because this means his entire story is made up, and made up poorly.

I'm one of those that believes he made up his rich dad in order to create false credibility and a sellable theme for his books. It obviously worked but it's about time to drop it. It's nauseating to have someone begin every (what would be a prophetic) sentence with "my rich dad always said..." and then two paragraphs later go on and on about honesty and integrity. I feel it's really a shame that he's tarnished what is a needed and worthwhile message.

This is one of his best books. It is filled with actual information and the perspectives on money, assets and liabilities but in particular what it means to expand your horizon to create money out of nothing but effort.

Pocos meses después de mi vigésimo primer cumpleaños recibí la llamada de un desconocido para darme la noticia. Por aquel tiempo yo vivía en Nueva York, en la calle 94, entre las avenidas Primera y Segunda, en esa frontera móvil y anónima que separa la parte este de Harlem del resto de Manhattan. Era una manzana inhóspita y desprovista de árboles, bordeada de edificios sin ascensor renegridos por el hollín, que proyectaban densas sombras durante la mayor parte del día. El apartamento era pequeño, de suelos desnivelados, calefacción que funcionaba a veces y un timbre en el portal que no funcionaba nunca, de forma que las visitas antes tenían que llamar desde un teléfono público que había en la gasolinera de la esquina, donde un doberman negro, tan grande como un lobo, se paseaba por la noche vigilando atento y sujetando entre sus mandíbulas una botella de cerveza vacía.

El silencio del anciano me impresionaba; pensaba que era un alma gemela. Más tarde, mi compañero de piso lo encontró arrebujado en el rellano del tercer piso, con los ojos abiertos de par en par y las extremidades rígidas y levantadas como las de un bebé. Me conmovió la soledad de la escena, y por un breve instante deseé haber conocido el nombre de aquel anciano. Inmediatamente lamenté mi deseo y me embargó la tristeza. Sentí como si se hubiese roto el entendimiento que había entre nosotros, como si, en aquella habitación desierta, el viejo me susurrara una historia nunca contada y me dijera cosas que hubiera preferido no oír.

Algo así como un mes más tarde, en una fría y deprimente mañana de noviembre mientras el sol se desvanecía detrás de una madeja de nubes, recibí una llamada. Estaba preparándome el desayuno, con el café en la hornilla y dos huevos en la sartén, cuando mi compañero de piso me pasó el teléfono. La línea estaba llena de interferencias.

-¿Barry? ¿Barry, eres tú?

- Sí…, ¿quién es?

- Sí, Barry…, soy tu tía Jane, de Nairobi. ¿Me oyes?

- Perdona, ¿quién has dicho que eres?

- La tía Jane. Escucha, Barry, tu padre ha muerto. Ha muerto en un accidente de tráfico. ¿Hola? ¿Me oyes? Te digo que tu padre ha muerto. Barry, por favor llama a tu tío a Boston y díselo. Ahora no puedo hablar, ¿vale, Barry? Intentaré llamarte otro día…

Eso fue todo. La línea se cortó y yo me senté en el sofá oliendo cómo los huevos se quemaban en la cocina, mientras miraba fijamente las grietas en el yeso y trataba de calibrar la dimensión de mi pérdida.

En el momento de su muerte mi padre seguía siendo un mito para mí próximo y lejano al mismo tiempo. -Tu padre era un conductor malísimo -me explicaba mi madre-.

Acababa siempre en el lado izquierdo, por el que conducen los ingleses. Y si le decías algo simplemente se enfurruñaba por las estúpidas normas de los norteamericanos.

-Bueno, esta vez llegaron sanos y salvos; bajaron del coche y se quedaron en la barandilla contemplando la vista. Barack lanzaba bocanadas de humo de la pipa que yo le había regalado por su cumpleaños, señalando el paisaje con la boquilla, como un viejo lobo de mar.

-Tu padre estaba orgulloso de su pipa -vuelve a interrumpir mi madre-. Fumaba durante toda la noche cuando estudiaba, y a veces…

-Escucha Ann, ¿quieres contar tú la historia o vas a dejar que termine?

-Lo siento papá, sigue.

-Bien, pues aquel pobre hombre, era otro estudiante africano, ¿no?, acababa de llegar en barco. Se ve que debía de impresionarle el modo cómo Barack hablaba haciendo aspavientos con la pipa, porque le preguntó que si podía probarla. Tu padre se quedó cavilando durante un minuto y finalmente accedió. Y tan pronto como el chico le dio la primera calada empezó a toser violentamente. Tosió tanto que la pipa se le resbaló de la mano y cayó al otro lado de la barandilla, casi treinta metros abajo en el fondo del acantilado.

Gramps se detiene para tomar otro traguito de su petaca antes de continuar.

-Pero bueno, tu padre fue lo bastante indulgente como para esperar a que su amigo terminara de toser, y después le dijo que saltara la barandilla y le devolviera la pipa. El hombre echó una mirada a aquel desnivel de noventa grados y le prometió a Barack que le compraría otra para reemplazarla.

-Una decisión sensata -dijo Toot desde la cocina (a mi abuela la llamábamos Tutu, Toot para abreviar, que significa abuela en hawaiano, pues el día que nací decidió que era demasiado joven para que la llamáramos Granny). El abuelo frunce entonces el ceño, pero decide ignorarla.

-Pero Barack se empeñaba en recuperar su pipa porque era un regalo y no podía ser reemplazada. Así que el tío echó otra mirada y de nuevo sacudió la cabeza. ¡Y entonces fue cuando tu padre lo levantó del suelo y empezó a zarandearlo por encima de la barandilla!

El abuelo suelta una risotada y con gesto jovial se golpea la rodilla. Mientras se ríe, yo me veo mirando a mi padre, oscurecido por el contraluz del brillante sol, sosteniendo en alto al infractor que agita sus brazos. Una implacable concepción de la justicia.

-En realidad no lo estaba sujetando por encima de la barandilla, papá -añade mi madre mirándome con preocupación, mientras Gramps toma otro sorbo de whisky y continúa.

Tu padre tenía una profunda voz de barítono y acento británico -mi abuelo metía entonces su barbilla hacia la garganta para darle mayor efecto-. «Cálmate Ann» continuó, «sólo quería darle a ese tío una lección sobre el cuidado que hay que tener con la propiedad ajena».

Gramps rió de nuevo hasta que comenzó a toser. Toot murmuraba entre dientes que suponía que era bueno que mi padre se hubiera dado cuenta de que el hecho de haber dejado caer la pipa sólo había sido un accidente, porque quién sabe qué podría haber pasado si no. Mi madre me lanzaba una mirada cómplice y me decía que estaban exagerando.

-Tu padre puede que fuera un poco dominante -admitía mi madre esbozando una sonrisa-. Pero en el fondo era una persona muy honesta. Lo que a veces le hacía ser impulsivo.

Ella prefería hacer un retrato más amable de mi padre. Contaba la historia de cuando acudió a recibir la llave de la Phi Beta Kappa*, vistiendo su ropa favorita: unos vaqueros y una vieja camiseta de punto con un estampado de leopardo.

-Nadie le había dicho que aquello era un acto importante, así que entró y se encontró a todo el mundo vestido de etiqueta en esa elegante sala. Fue la primera vez que lo vi sonrojarse.

Y el abuelo, de repente pensativo, asentía con la cabeza y decía:

-Lo cierto, Bar, es que tu padre podía manejar cualquier tipo de situación, y eso hacía que le gustara a todo el mundo. ¿Te acuerdas de cuando tuvo que actuar en el Festival Internacional de Música? Accedió a interpretar algunas canciones africanas, pero aquello era algo más serio de lo que pensaba, ya que la chica que salió antes que él resultó ser una cantante semiprofesional, una hawaiana con el apoyo de una orquesta al completo. Cualquier otro hubiera abandonado justo en ese momento, excusándose en que todo aquello había sido un error. Pero no Barack. Se puso en pie y cantó ante la audiencia, lo que no era fácil, déjame que te diga. Y no es que lo hiciera bien, pero estaba tan seguro de sí mismo que consiguió tantos aplausos como cualquier otro.

Gramps se levantó de su silla meneando la cabeza y, girándose, encendió el televisor.

Cuando comencé a ser consciente de mis recuerdos, mi madre ya había iniciado el noviazgo con el hombre que se convertiría en su segundo marido y supe, sin necesidad de explicación alguna, porqué tuvieron que guardarse las fotos de mi padre. Pero, de vez en cuando, mi madre y yo nos sentábamos en el suelo, con ese olor a polvo y naftalina que desprendía el álbum, y me detenía a observar el aspecto de mi padre -su sonriente cara oscura, la frente grande y las gruesas gafas que le hacían parecer más viejo de lo que era- y escuchaba mientras cómo los acontecimientos de su vida se hilvanaban en un simple relato.

Según llegué a saber, era africano, de Kenia, de la tribu de los Luo, nacido a orillas del lago Victoria, en un lugar llamado Alego. Era un poblado pobre, pero su padre -mi otro abuelo, Hussein Onyango Obama- había sido un importante granjero y patriarca de la tribu, un hombre medicina que tenía poderes curativos. Mi padre creció pasto reando la manada de cabras de su padre y asistía a la escuela local que había fundado el gobierno colonial británico, donde demostró poseer grandes aptitudes. Obtuvo otra beca, esta vez para doctorarse en Harvard, pero al no contar con el dinero necesario para poder llevarse con él a su familia se produjo la separación y regresó a África para cumplir su compromiso con el continente. Madre e hijo quedaron atrás, pero los lazos del amor superaron la distancia…

About the Author
Nancy Silverton is the co-owner of Osteria Mozza, Pizzeria Mozza, and Mozza2Go in Los Angeles, where she makes her home. She is the founder of the La Brea Bakery and formerly owned and operated Campanile (recipient of the 2001 James Beard Award for Best Restaurant). She is the author of A Twist of the Wrist, Nancy Silverton’s Sandwich Book, Nancy Silverton’s Pastries from the La Brea Bakery (recipient of a 2000 Food & Wine Best Cookbook Award), Nancy Silverton’s Breads from the La Brea Bakery, and Desserts. She has three children.

Matt Molina, a graduate of the Los Angeles Culinary Institute, began his career with Nancy Silverton at Campanile in Los Angeles. After six years, he went on to train at Del Posto in New York City in preparation for his role as executive chef of Pizzeria Mozza and Osteria Mozza. At both restaurants, Matt has received three stars from the Los Angeles Times and in 2008 he garnered Osteria Mozza a Michelin star. Matt has been nominated for Rising Star Chef, Best Chef Pacific, and Best New Restaurant at Osteria Mozza by the James Beard Foundation.

This is an excellent book which will be appreciated both by both expert and novice chefs

I'm extremely impressed with the book. First, I live in LA and am a huge fan of both Pizzeria Mozza and Osteria Mozza, so I already know I like most of the recipes. Second, I appreciate the fact that these recipes are truly different (sometimes in subtle ways) than the 'standard' versions of the dishes presented. Example: the meatballs. Mozza has wonderful meatballs, and you could spend a lot of time trying to figure out what is special about them. It turns out that the answer is quite simple: they contain no beef, but they do contain ground pancetta, so the meats are veal, pork, and pancetta. This may not sound like a big difference, but I strongly recommend trying the recipe and promise that you will have a hard time going back to regular meatballs. Third, I like the intellectual honesty of the book. Example: the Torta Della Nonna contains three cheeses, Philadelphia Cream Cheese, Coach Farms Goat Cheese, and mascarpone. This is a very non-traditional combination, but most important, it is exactly the kind of thing done in a restaurant kitchen (ie combining commodity cheese like Philadelphia with high end Goat Cheese) that most of the time no one would admit to in a book. How many times have I bought a restaurant cookbook where it is glaringly obvious the recipes bear no resemblance to what is actually done in the restaurant? Not so with this one. The exceptions, where they exist, are well specified. Fourth, these are simple recipes that pretty much anyone with a moderate level of cooking experience could make (possibly with some artistic license, for example not making the pasta by hand as it's recommended), but ones that have enough twists and changes in them that an experienced chef is sure to learn some exciting new flavor combinations. Fifth, the details behind each recipe are there for people who want them. Example: one of my favorite Osteria Mozza dishes is the orecchiette with rapini and fennel sausage. Most books would just call for 'fennel sausage' in the ingredients when in fact the specific fennel sausage is really key to the dish (and it's an excellent one). In this book, the actual fennel sausage recipe is there -- of course it's up to you whether or not you want to go to the trouble of making it. Bottom line - I have a huge cookbook collection. While I enjoy thumbing through most of them, this is one of the few that I will actually make a lot of stuff from on a regular basis. Highly recommended, especially for those who can't drive a few miles to eat at the restaurants in person.

Well-written Recipes that WORK!

Nancy Silverton is a fabulous chef that I have followed for years. Her food is exquisite and her cookbooks are beautiful.
I fell in love with the pictures in this cookbook long before I cooked a single recipe but, in cooking many of them, I was not disappointed.
I have used numerous of the recipes in this book and each and every one of them is well-written and easy to follow and execute. They all turn out really well and are super tasty.
I recently had the opportunity to dine at Mozza and was thrilled to see many of the dishes in the book were still on the menu and they tasted just like the recipes I'd been following...although so much better at the restaurant with Nancy cooking them instead of me. ;-)
This is one of my favorite cookbooks and go-to for dinner parties.

Yes! But

Let's get this out of the way: this book is phenomenal. If you follow the recipes faithfully, they will lead you down the path of flavor glory.

Things to consider --

1. You need time, and lots of it. The authors talk about restaurants having prep cooks and full staffs to do the work that you, as a home cook, will endeavor to do on your own. Most recipes call for elements that need to first be created by looking elsewhere in the book. It's laborious stuff and you'll most likely be parceling out sections of your work over several days. You're going to be falling down a Mozza rabbit hole. It's delicious, but it requires scheduling.

2. You need money and access to products. Many of the book's suggested ingredients (especially if you want to get them at the quality you'd expect from Mozza) aren't reasonable for people on a tight budget or for people who can't readily obtain things like ground veal or burrata.

3. Invite friends to try your creations. You'll want everyone to know what you made and how amazing you are as a cook!
