the later chapter are funny the first chapters are stone serious but they are all worth reading
By Amazon Customer
I used to be a manager at a large aircraft company for 20years and this book reminds me of my time there, especially the part about unions. We had a lady there that I KNOW was fired at least 6 times and 6 times the union got her job back and the only thing she did all day was stamp #s on parts with a hammer. How hard is that? Finally on the 7th time she got caught taking a long break I fired her myself and that time the firing stuck but it took 7 times to do it! Now to be fair, the company messed some people over too by not paying people who'd got hurt on the job and making up some excuse not to do so and the union did help them but it also helped a lot of people never should have been hired in the first place. This book will teach how to not get cheated by crooked attornys and unions.
You can read this book from chapter 1 to chapter 12. It makes more sense that way. But the funniest chapters are in the back. So if I was reading this book for the first time I would start with the last chapter and work toward the beginning. The beginning is very serious and a bit hard to read. unless you have an MBA or a PHD youre gonna have a hard time with the first chapters but the later chapters are much more fun and much easier to read.

Read This and Albert Speer's Inside the Third Reich in Succession
By Amazon Customer
I loved this book, but to really appreciate it, you have to read Albert Speer's Inside the Third Reich, another book on power politics, but this one set in Nazi Germany. You'll see all kinds of parallels. For example, at one point in Inside the Third Reich, Albert Speer wants to take control of an important committee, so he arranges to have meetings needlessly scheduled on a weekly basis, knowing full-well that Goering, his closest rival, will be too lazy to attend them - a classic example of the principle innumerated in The Hatchet Man's Playbook of the hardest butts prevailing against the brightest minds. Both books are worthwhile reading, though unless you really like architecture, I would skip the first 200 pages of Inside the Third Reich though they are pleasant reading as well. Those pages are valuable in a sense because they show how Speer, a mere architect, managed to wangle control over all armament production in the Third Reich even though he had absolutely no experience whatsoever in operation management. He was just a guy that Hitler liked. But so much of the first 200 pages is just this type of architecture verses that type of architecture and how the German's wanted to beat the French culturally by having the best and most impressive in the world.

A tautly written and germane caveat for the toe-in-the-pool neophyte to heed ... and for the grizzled old lag to chuckle over, all the while wishing "Dang, I wish I'da read this book before I went to work for those Machiavellian changelings at (fill in company name here)!"

The Absent Superpower: The Shale Revolution and a World Without America, by Peter Zeihan

The world is changing in ways most of us find incomprehensible. Terrorism spills out of the Middle East into Europe. Russia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, China and Japan vie to see who can be most aggressive. Financial breakdown in Asia and Europe guts growth, challenging hard-won political stability.

Yet for the Americans, these changes are fantastic. Alone among the world's powers, only the United States is geographically wealthy, demographically robust, and energy secure. That last piece -- American energy security -- is rapidly emerging as the most critical piece of the global picture.

The American shale revolution does more than sever the largest of the remaining ties that bind America's fate to the wider world. It re-industrializes the United States, accelerates the global order's breakdown, and triggers a series of wide ranging military conflicts that will shape the next two decades. The common theme? Just as the global economy tips into chaos, just as global energy becomes dangerous, just as the world really needs the Americans to be engaged, the United States will be...absent.

In 2014's The Accidental Superpower, geopolitical strategist Peter Zeihan made the case that geographic, demographic and energy trends were unravelling the global system. Zeihan takes the story a step further in The Absent Superpower, mapping out the threats and opportunities as the world descends into Disorder.

Review
"Peter Zeihan has written a smart, well-crafted page-turner that lays out the compelling reasons why America's role in the world has changed--and why that's good news for Americans and sobering for everyone else. His vivid account of the impact of America's good fortune for the rest of the world makes this an original and invaluable read." -- Ian Bremmer, Eurasia Group

"Zeihan follows his groundbreaking analysis of the post-WWII global geopolitical and economic system in Accidental Superpower with a projection of what might happen whenthe U.S., because of its new energy security and dynamic economy based on the shale revolution, withdraws from its principle role as security guarantor of the global order. Peter builds on prodigious objective demographic, energy, economic and geopolitical indicators to frame provocative scenarios based onthe impact of an American inward focus to the exclusion of international order. Delivered with his trademark irreverent wit, this book should be a must readfor public and private leaders alike. If President Trump has but one book to read as he assumes command, it should be this one." -- Honorable Dave McCurdy, Memberof U.S. House of Representatives (D - Ok, 1981-1995), served as chairman of theHouse Intelligence Committee during the breakup of the Soviet Union and throughoutOperation Desert Storm. President and CEO of the American Gas Association.

"TheAbsent Superpower is a must-read to understand the forces that will shapegeopolitics and potentially ignite decades of global disorder. By dissectingthe technological and geographic realities of energy and demography, Zeihan forecasts theconflicts and economic realignments that will follow America's withdrawal fromactive global leadership." -- Mitt Romney, former governor of Massachusetts and Republican presidential candidate

Absent Superpower, a great sequel to Accidental Superpower.
By Abacus
In 2014, the author wrote a fascinating book “The Accidental Superpower.” It described how the U.S. benefits from a combination of geographic factors including maritime advantages (navigable river ways, natural harbors making for a network of low cost transportation), an ideal location from a security standpoint (an island-continent protected by huge oceans on each side, and surrounded by two friendly neighbors integrated in NAFTA). Additionally, the U.S. also benefits from material demographic advantages whereby the U.S. population is not aging nearly as fast if at all compared to Japan, China, and Europe (graph on pg 111 shows a spectacular difference in aging demographic trend through 2040 between the U.S. and the other countries). Its labor force will continue growing unlike in Japan and Russia where it is shrinking catastrophically rapidly. Zeihan also added near the end of the book that the emergence of shale oil production will render the U.S. increasingly energy independent.

In 2014 Zeihan anticipated that as the U.S. is becoming self-sufficient on all counts, its foreign policy will become more isolationist and protectionist (anti-trade. The U.S. will become less (financially) supportive of NATO and worldwide maritime routes security (end of Bretton Woods era). Three years later everything Zeihan anticipated did occur. And, it can be summed up in one word: Trump! Zeihan indicated in his newsletter that if Hillary had won the election, the U.S. policy path would be identical but carried out at a slower pace.

Within “The Accidental Superpower” Zeihan explored the fate of various countries and supranational entities including Russia, China, Japan, Europe and the Euro Zone in particular. In each case, their respective situation for one or more geographical and demographic factors is far less favorable than for the U.S. making unlikely that another hegemon will rise to replace the U.S.

By the time, Zeihan published his first book Saudi Arabia undertook an aggressive oil price war by pumping oil supply and lowering oil prices at time down to the low $40s. It was perceived that this was to bankrupt the U.S. shale oil industry. And, it seemed to be successful as many shale oil operations shut down at least temporarily.

So, now over two years later Zeihan comes with an update “The Absent Super Power.” However, while his first book was focused on water ways (a factor ignored by the international economics literature), he is now focusing on U.S. shale oil as the subtitle of the book indicates.

In the first part of the book Zeihan indicates how the U.S. shale oil industry experienced a drastic improvement in efficiency in response to the Saudis oil price war. On page 46, he shares a graph that indicates the U.S. shale oil industry lowered its breakeven point from $90 per barrel in 2012 down to $40 in 2017. Its breakeven point is now lower than for the U.S. traditional oil industry! And, it has matched Russia, a low cost oil producer. Only Saudi Arabia has a markedly lower breakeven point at around $25. Other OPEC countries are in the mid $30s (not much lower than U.S. shale). One should keep in mind that Saudi Arabia’s oil operations can break even at $25, however its’ fiscal balance requires oil prices closer to a $100 to avoid running large Budget Deficits. At $25, Saudi Arabia’s Budget Deficit would probably be over 20% of GDP.

U.S. shale oil has improved its efficiency by developing new technologies including micro-seismic exploration and multilateral drilling that leverages Big Data live information. The improved technology allows the industry to improve its success rate and efficiency. Because of those improvements, even though the industry was closing down many shale operations during the price war, the remaining survivors produced a lot more oil per rig than ever before (graph pg. 29). And, the overall shale oil output held up (see graph pg. 67).

U.S. shale exploration guarantees a low cap on U.S. oil price and an abundance of low cost natural gas. And, the latter is associated with abundant electricity generation at a lower cost than major OECD competitors. This is an advantage that may contribute to the reindustralisation of the U.S. And, lower energy costs (petroleum and natural gas) have implications affecting numerous part of the consumer, chemical, pharmaceutical, and industrial product sectors (diagram on pg. 63).

U.S. shale energy is based on numerous competitive advantages that include geology (maritime shale is easier to extract than lacustrine shale), law (U.S. is among few countries that fully implement private mineral rights), labor specialization (largest body of proficient engineers specializing in shale exploration), capital availability (best risk capital infrastructure), and as mentioned the best shale energy exploration technology. Those competitive advantages are not fully replicable anywhere else. Thus, the U.S. is likely to remain the leader in this sector for a very long time.

As a consequence of the emergence of U.S. shale oil, the international oil markets will fragment into at least two (if not more) separate markets: a) a US domestic one where prices will be chronically low and not volatile; and b) the traditional international one where prices will be a lot more volatile and have frequent spikes at or above $100 even $150 associated with Gulf crisis, wars, etc.

In the second and main part of the book, Zeihan describes “The Disorder” where he describes the falling apart of the existing Bretton Woods era. Per Zeihan, the World Order is going to fracture along three sets of wars that he defines as: 1) the Twilight War; 2) the Next Gulf War; and 3) the Tanker War.

In the Twilight War, he describes how Russia in order to preempt its unfortunate geography (flat and vulnerable to attacks) and demography (rapidly shrinking population) will attempt to rebuild the USSR by either invading or controlling former satellite countries (he designates 11 such countries on pg. 138). Russia has started on this venture with Georgia, and Ukraine. But, it will want to venture as far into Western Europe as part of Poland! By attempting this land grab, Russia will have much friction with both Scandinavia and Turkey; but such prospective conflicts will experience stalemate without shift in borders or control from existing arrangements.

The Next Gulf War is really about the tension between Iran (Shiites) and Saudi Arabia (Sunnis) who both compete for supremacy in the Region. And, the U.S. will stop policing the area as it becomes increasingly energy independent. The U.S. very soon will not need Saudi Arabia anymore as the U.S. imports are steadily declining. And, whatever oil it imports comes a lot more from Canada and a lot less from Saudi Arabia. Zeihan reveals that the Saudis oil price war started in 2014 was not so much or only aimed at the U.S. shale oil industry; but, it was particularly aimed at Iran. When oil revenues drop because of lower oil prices, both countries run huge Budget Deficits in the 10% to 15% range of GDP. And, the Saudis have a lot more cash reserves than Iran. The Saudis can afford such Deficits for years, Iran can’t. Meanwhile, Iran has superior military capabilities and will attempt to reconquer portions of the Persian Empire. The tension and conflict between Iran and Saudi Arabia will trigger collateral damage throughout the region. “several of the Middle Eastern countries … will lose so much industrial, electrical, and agricultural capacity that they will … de-civilize. Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Yemen, Lebanon … will lose the ability to maintain populations more than one-third their current size.” (pg. 208).

The Tanker War is about oil importing countries waging maritime operations and wars to protect their access to oil energy. Those operations will take place in the Far East. And, Japan will play a preponderant role thanks to its strong navy. “Destroy global free trade, unleash the Japanese, and the end of China is nigh… Simply put, the days of China Inc. and Factory Asia are over.” (pg. 258-259). The tension between China and Japan in protecting their respective access to oil energy will affect the entire Far East. The region will be plagued by far higher energy prices/costs than any others because it is so much more energy dependent. Zeihan frequently refers to the “Asian premium.”

The last chapter of the Part II: Disorder is on the international private major companies. Once again the Americans (ExxonMobil and Chevron) are the dominant players in technology, global reach, and capital. By contrast BP has been pretty much wiped out in the aftermath of its Deepwater Horizon oil rig disaster in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010.

Near the end of the book, Zeihan describes how the U.S. will engage (relatively minimally) in the World. He describes the U.S. foreign policy as “Dollar diplomacy.”

The U.S. will implement its Dollar diplomacy with Southeast Asia and Australia and New Zealand. The U.S. will continue to maintain close trade and direct investment ties with this region to recreate supply chains to replace or diversify away from relying on China’s manufacturing.

During the Disorder’s China manufacturing capacity may weaken significantly as the country experiences a convergence of crises including a debt crisis, a bank credit crisis, an aging population and shrinking labor force crisis, and much geopolitical frictions (the Tanker War).

The U.S. will use its Dollar diplomacy throughout Latin America. The region has substantial energy assets including a promising shale oil area in Argentina. But, because of mismanagement the region has not properly utilized those energy assets. The U.S. brings the technology, security, management know-how, and logistics assistance. The U.S. will shift also some of its former supply chains away from China towards Latin America. The U.S. is by far the largest consumer market that will remain a viable trading partner during the Disorder. And, Latin America needs the income that will be generated by the U.S. Dollar diplomacy to repay its foreign debt and feed its people. In summary, Latin America will have no choice but to accept the U.S. terms on their joint energy exploration.

In the appendices of the book, Zeihan addresses environmental concerns associated with shale oil. Within this section he conveys a couple of fascinating facts. On pg. 385, he shares a graph that depicts a time series of the estimated temperature increase caused by a doubling of CO2 based on studies completed between 2001 and 2014. And, back in 2001 this estimated temperature increase ranged from + 2.5 to 4.0 degree Celsius. The more recent estimates have shrunk it down to + 1.5 to 2 degree Celsius. That’s a huge difference. Later in this section, he reviews the prospect of renewables (wind, solar). And, they are just not scalable enough to make much of a dent in the overall energy mix. Those energy sources are intermittent, not easily storable and transmissible. Only a small fraction of the earth provides favorable conditions for either. He sees as a more realistic path to reduce CO2 emission the increasing substitution of coal with natural gas (to generate electricity) and increasing energy efficiency.

I have a few rebuttals to Zeihan’s theories.

First, Zeihan’s main point is that the U.S. is now pretty much a self-sufficient economy that does not need much to trade with other nations. Therefore, it does not need to maintain the supranational Bretton Woods order (NATO, security of maritime routes, etc.). However, when looking at the Bureau of Economic Analysis time series focusing on the trade of goods only (not services) imports have risen from 1.6% of GDP in 1942 to 12.7% in 2015. Similarly, exports of goods have risen over the same period from 1.6% to 8.3%. This is not an isolationist nation, but instead one that is increasingly becoming a hub of industrial design whereby the actual goods are manufactured and assembled out of the U.S. By the same token, the U.S. runs a resulting chronic large Current Account Deficit. As a result, foreigners hold a substantial portion of U.S. Treasuries. In summary, economic trends suggests the U.S. is increasingly codependent with the World in both international trade and international capital flows. Those are not bad things, but they run in opposite direction of Zeihan’s theoretical foundation.

Now, focusing on the U.S. energy independence. Even using Zeihan’s own compiled data, I found divergence. On pg. 406, his data conveys the U.S. only produces 65% of the crude oil and natural gas it consumes. Using Zeihan’s numbers, even if we assume Canada would commit 100% of its exports to the U.S. it would fill less than half that gap. It is difficult to come up with a precise estimate, but I suspect that US production + Canada’s imports equal less than 80% of U.S. consumption. “Energy independence” is somewhat premature.

Another chronic weakness of the U.S. is its deteriorating fiscal outlook. The U.S. over the next couple of decades will face structural unsustainable yearly Budget Deficits in the 4%+ range that will rapidly grow the U.S. Debt/GDP ratio uncontrollably (Congressional Budget Office is a good source on the topic). The Government has been aware of this situation for over three decades and has done nothing to resolve it. Similarly, at the State and local level finances are strained (Pension crisis). Infrastructure is not well maintained (electricity grid, bridges, roads). Zeihan ignores entirely those fiscal weaknesses at all levels of U.S. Government.

Another weakness is the U.S. consistently poor showing in international education standards comparison (PISA). This has to result in a shortage of American engineers, mathematicians, and scientists that has unfavorable implication in the current Big Data-Artificial Intelligence race. It would appear key for the U.S. to remain open to immigrants with human capital. However, the current political discourse does not seem favorable to that.

Despite the few rebuttals mentioned above, I give the book a 4-star rating for the originality of the argument and the depth of the research.

As the US moves on from the world it fashioned after WW2 ! - What's next?
By Jockular
AS Prez Trump skips school, Prof. Peter Zeihan answers the absent pupil's question "what the hell is going on".

By this I mean, Zeihan dives deep into the "big picture" (of geography, demography and energy) which have been dismantling the post-WW2 period the US forged at Bretton Woods 70 years ago..

Even more useful is Zeihan's projection of the world which will replace Bretton Woods, when US guaranteed and enforced "freedom of the seas" and Pax Americana through a global network of security alliances under the US nuclear umbrella unravel.

3 lregional wars are deemed likely as the guarantor, enforcer and referee exits the stage:

-- Russia vs. the Baltics, Scandinavians, and Poland
-- Iran vs. Saudi Arabia for dominance of Islam
-- China vs. Japan for control of the China seas, and of shipping routes for mideastern oil to Asia.

Given energy self-sufficiency from shale, the US is no longer obligated to participate. As it chooses, the US will intervene not with ground troops, but via aircraft carriers, jet fighters and drones. Special forces and cyber will round out the arsenal.

If any of these wars in fact materialize, oil prices outside N.America will likely be driven to $150/bbl. Shale oil (extracted with ever greater efficiency and cost cutting) will keep US prices below $70/bbl in all states but California.

The "golden state" imports most of its oil from the Middle East and Alaska. These producers will turn away to overseas markets willing to pay higher prices. California either develops the Monterrey shale timely (3 years before hostilities) or pays $5-6 more than other states for its oil.

News you can use, even if only part of these predictions come to pass. They make our Dear Leader's bluster seem rather unnecessary. All that's needed is to educate the world as to why the Bretton Woods era must end. This could be done graciously, but it likely won't be.

This points up 2 of Zeihan's blindspots: 1. leadership and 2. cyber.

The last time major powers evolved (Germany and Japan) world leaders failed to accommodate them into the global system. As a result, tens of millions died prematurely. Will today's leaders rise above their national interests to accommodate and shape China's role?

Cyberwar elevates Russia, China, and Iran to near US level. How many more countries can field hacker teams of a dozen or two world-class minds, and become big-league players in cyberwarfare?

If the US is really intent upon departing the world stage for a few decades, it might be wise NOT to antagonize those most threatened by its absence. No joke!

I can't recommend his work highly enough
By Kirk
I find Peter's writing and presentations to be extremely informative and engaging. I can't recommend his work highly enough. I pushed his previous book, The Accidental Superpower, on several of my friends and family; all were blown away by the clarity and depth Peter provided. The Absent Superpower is another home run. From the description of various fracking technologies to country by country analysis, I know I am more prepared to digest the news of tomorrow in a coherent fashion.

For example, as a Californian, I sincerely hope the Monterey Shale has the potential Peter laid out! Peter's predicts a retreating America; which would let the Persian Gulf tensions severely hamper the production/transport of its oil. California would mostly be cut off the Persian Gulf supplies, apparently Alaska has a loophole to get around an export ban, and South American oil would get bid up by desperate Asian countries. I knew none of this until I was introduced to Peter's work. Excellent job Peter!

Informative, but look for emotional coping strategies elsewhere
By Heliopolis
Having recently had a long, very painful first outbreak, I bought this book to understand what was happening to me, and what I could expect for the future.

It contains a lot of good information, and I highly recommend it as a fact/reality-check. Everything appears up-to-date, though I would've liked to see a summary with key facts in the back, to refer to in the future. The author covers what herpes is, the various types, how often you can expect an outbreak, how contagious you might be to partners, as well as basic preventative measures against outbreaks. Warren even goes briefly into other STDs, especially if they relate to herpes. Overall you're getting a great education on herpes, written in a very upfront manner - everything you should have known, or wish you had known before getting this STD - but which will help you lead a safer sexual life now.

The book is very thorough on facts, but I was disappointed by how the emotional aspects were dealt with. As many people with herpes know, and certainly those who've had bad outbreaks, getting this disease can be very traumatic, leaving you wondering how or if you'll ever be able to responsibly have a normal sex life again.

The author talks about the emotions, but it's done in a kind of 'handbook' style - as in, 'You're probably feeling this, and you might be feeling that... but the truth is, it's not that bad, or maybe you could have been more responsible, and yes your sex life will be different, but maybe that's not such a bad thing.'

Personally, I found it unconvincing, a bit patronizing, and just not too helpful in that regard. It certainly didn't come close to helping me cope with the amount of pain I was in, and the dread of what it might mean for my entire sexual life. It reads like a doctor, giving you information, while trying to seem compassionate. It just didn't work that well for me.

I also wanted a lot more information on the initial outbreak and how to cope with it, both physically and emotionally. How severe an initial outbreak can be differs widely from person to person. Some people don't even know they've been infected - while others, like me, feel they've caught the worst flu of their life, are in a lot of pain, and are totally drained of energy. The person who gave me herpes never had a bad reaction and thought "everyone has herpes anyway," so she thought there was no reason to tell me she was infected.

These half-truths about herpes - that it's so common, and isn't that bad - and adding to the mix the emotional issues and stigma (from the medical establishment too, which simply ignores herpes in routine STD testing) - are what allows this disease to quietly rack up more and more victims each year. This book does confirm these facts for the most part. Yes, a lot of people do have herpes - maybe 20-50% of the population - and many don't have bad outbreaks, or that often. But that's not everyone. I didn't have herpes antibodies, and my symptoms were so bad I felt they could've put me in the hospital.

So in that, I don't feel the book put as much effort in talking about the severe reactions and worser-case scenarios, which some of us will have. Yes, no author wants to add to the trauma or fear, but for those going through the worst-case, you really do want to know, if only to know that you're not alone.

In closing - if you have had or are having a bad outbreak, or feel traumatized by this experience - I recommend reading another book alongside this one, to help you with the emotional issues - which are just as important if not more, to dealing with this disease constructively. I've skimmed through some of Kelly Shuh's books and may check out one of those in the future.

Best wishes to you.

Excellent information and an easy read. I recently started dating someone with herpes and do not have it myself and this has helped me thoroughly understand the risks, ways I can protect myself, how to have conversations about it, psychological aspects of acquiring herpes, and more. This is what I wish sex ed was like in school! Real information about risks with no exaggeration, shame, or fear mongering.

Life has been good to Becky Bloomwood: She’s become the top personal shopper at Barneys and she’s living happily with her boyfriend, Luke, in Manhattan’s West Village. But with her best friend, Suze, engaged, how can Becky fail to notice that her own ring finger is bare? Not that she’s been thinking about marriage (or diamonds) or anything.

Then Luke proposes! Problem is, two other people are planning her wedding: Becky’s overjoyed mother—who has been waiting forever to host a backyard wedding, with the bride resplendent in Mum’s frilly old gown; and her high-society soon-to-be mother-in-law—who insists on a glamorous, all-expenses-paid affair at the Plaza. Both weddings, on separate continents, on the same day . . . and Becky can’t seem to turn down either one. Can everyone’s favorite shopaholic tie the knot before everything unravels?

Another entertaining entry in Kinsella's unabashedly fluffy Shopaholic series. Life could not get any better for Becky Bloomwood, the irresistibly daft heroine of Confessions of a Shopaholic (2001) and Shopaholic Takes Manhattan (2002). She has managed to parlay her personal and professional passions into a dream job as a personal shopper at Barney's, and she and her wildly successful boyfriend live a life of relative peace and prosperity in Manhattan's West Village. Well, at least they would if Becky could manage to curb her extravagant spending habits a bit. When Luke finally pops the question, a euphoric Becky manages to entangle herself in another rather sticky predicament. Becky's cozy mum back in England has planned a homespun wedding for her only daughter on the same day for which Luke's frosty society mother has booked the Plaza in New York. Two weddings on the same day, what's a committed consumer to do? Chock-full of the charming antics and asides that made the first two installments hilarious best-sellers. Margaret Flanagan

Nail-Biting and Hilarious at the Same Time!
By E.P. Clark
So, I'm totally in love with the Shopaholic series, but this book was the one I had the most difficulty relating to. I'm still giving it five stars because I think it was really well-done, but the conflict in this one was difficult for me to deal with--almost TOO scary! I'd like to say that nothing like that would ever happen to me, just like I'd like to say that I'd never get into debt and throw away my bills without reading them, but...it's like reading about all my worst fears! I don't want to say any more and spoil the plot, so you, dear reader, will have to read it yourself to find out just what was so nail-biting.

Which is one of the achievements of this series. It seems so lighthearted and glittery, and it is, but it uses its surface glitter to tap into deep-seated fears and problems. How do you deal with the fact that you have recurring patterns of behavior that you can't seem to control and that repeatedly cause problems for you and the people you love? How do you deal with the conflicting demands of your family, your in-laws, and your own desires? How do you stop things that you've innocently set into motion out of a desire not to make things bad, but that are now threatening to blow up in your face? Becky Bloomwood is peculiarly like a figure out of classical or Shakespearean tragedy (snobs, stop your howls of outrage!), caught up in the inevitability of her fate and her character, it's just that her problems come wrapped up in Vera Wang wedding dresses. Technically there's so much to love here, despite a certain repetition that keeps repeating itself (haha!) as the series goes on, and scholars of literary technique would do well to study the apparent lighthearted effortless that Kinsella imbues her plot with, even as she draws subtly on tricks from detective and horror fiction in order to keep the tension ramped up to high.

Got tired of Becky
By Amazon-klant
It's not that I expected much really. I did read the first two books - more out of curiosity than anything else - and I must say, contrary to what I thought, I quite liked them. I would't say they were the best I've read, but good enough to read something between things.
This book however, was just plain boring. I guess I got tired of Becky Bloomwood. In fact, I don't really like her. I didn't mind before but somehow, in this book, she really stared to annoy me. I must admit that I did wonder at some point how she was going to pull the wedding thing off, but other than that I found myself skipping pages because I just couldn't be bothered. Which is something I seldom do.

I was hoping that this book would surprise me as well, but, all in all not that great for me.
I guess I'll not read the next books :-)

Becky rocks.....
By Shoeho
Okay, I admit I love Becky. She's an unrepentant uber-consumer, who seldom met a shop (not to mention a sale) she didn't want to dlve into. She only feels regret when she figures her husband is going to find out how much she spends on Prada. She's loving and generous, she just has a serious clothes jones--which she can well afford by this point. So nice to have someone who is not ashamed of herself for being a first world consumer. I know, I know, there are many serious issues out there, but sometimes we do need to be reminded roses still exist, even if we choose not to smell them. BTW, I work in a helping profession--I see enough misery at work, when I read, I like a little levity.

Maven is largely replacing Ant as the build tool of choice for large open source Java projects because, unlike Ant, Maven is also a project management tool that can run reports, generate a project website, and facilitate communication among members of a working team.To use Maven, everything you need to know is in this guide. The first part demonstrates the tool's capabilities through the development, from ideation to deployment, of several sample applications -- a simple software development project, a simple web application, a multi-module project, and a multi-module enterprise project. The second part offers a complete reference guide that includes:

  • The POM and Project Relationships
  • The Build Lifecycle
  • Plugins
  • Project website generation
  • Advanced site generation
  • Reporting
  • Properties
  • Build Profiles
  • The Maven Repository
  • Team Collaboration
  • Writing Plugins
  • IDEs such as Eclipse, IntelliJ, ands NetBeans
  • Using and creating assemblies
  • Developing with Maven Archetypes

Several sources for Maven have appeared online for some time, but nothing served as an introduction and comprehensive reference guide to this tool -- until now. Maven: The Definitive Guide is the ideal book to help you manage development projects for software, web applications, and enterprise applications. And it comes straight from the source.

Good but too many errors; read it online
By Dim Dandy
This book is actually available online, free, from sonatype (google "maven reference"). I've come across at least three points in this text (which was published in 2008) that had me scratching my head, and then finally (after too much wasted time) coming to the conclusion that the text must be bungled, or garbled. So I went to the online version and found that this was indeed the case, and the errors have been corrected there.

There is much good material in this book, but if it's available for free, and the free version is more reliable, it lowers the motivation to buy the book.

One serious complaint I have about both this and the online version is the beginning of the chapter on assemblies. Most of the book is not like this, but that particular section is one of the worst examples I've ever seen of a complicated topic approached from the assumption that you already understand the complicated topic. It doesn't even begin by defining clearly, to a newbie, just what an assembly is, and why you want to use it. Instead, it dives into some puzzling minutiae about the difficulties you can run into using assemblies. I had to go to other online resources (maven.org documentation was helpful, which is ironic, because most of it is written from the you-already-understand perspective, and that's what drove me to this book). Otherwise, I think I would have remained on the starting line with this topic.

Learning maven is not easy, and I expect to struggle a bit, so when I say that they started on the assumption that you already understand the topic, I'm not whining that they didn't hold my hand sufficiently. I'm saying that, on the first, second and third readings, the gist of the text soared straight over my head. I might as well have been reading it in Greek.

Having said that, there is material further into the chapter on setting up and configuring assemblies that is very helpful. However, it also contains one of the serious errors. There is a list of items describing how to resolve expressions in an outputFileNameMapping element. Item 1 has four subitems under it, a, b, c and d. Item 1 begins by saying, "If the expression matches the pattern ${artifact.*}". Sub-item d begins with "If the expression matches the patterns ${pom.*} or ${project.*}". Now, how can an expression match both ${artifact.*} and ${pom.*}? The online version corrects this, and turns sub-item d into item 2. (The original item 2 became item 3, and it was also revamped.) So that was some time wasted. Considering that this book was published in 2008, I would think that they might have at least corrected the errors in the e-book version by now.

Another, more minor, quibble is that the book talks about "mojos" but doesn't explain what they are; they're just maven goals. "Mojo" became a term to refer to a goal. Again, I found this on maven.org's documentation. (I also had this mixed up in my mind; codehaus has a set of maven plugin "mojos," and for some time I thought "mojo" was a codehaus term.)

Having said all of this, I have learned much from the e-book, there is no question about that. If you really want an epub version of the book, to read it conveniently on a Kindle, then it's worth the modest price. If you come across a passage that seems to make no sense, bookmark and look it up later online.

Very good explanations about Multiple Module Projects
By M. Bennett
When I saw the less than 5 star rating I really wanted to add my input. I particularly appreciated the content starting in chapters 6 and 7, about having a hierarchy of related projects, mixing packaging types of pom, jar and war files, reviewing the components of web apps and how they're packaged into Maven, etc.

Our team has been working with Maven for 6 months now and I had previously read quite a bit online, plus purchased a couple other Maven books. For where I'm at in my learning curve, this book fits what I needed. I think somebody new to Maven could still follow it; it's not quite a "recipe" oriented as some books, but really clear writing and explicit steps.

The book is now a few years old, but these tools and concepts are still relevant today (Q4 2012). If they do an update, I'd suggest a bit more in Chapter 6 about their web.xml file (reason for multiple targets, review the file-class-url mappings, etc.), though none of those issues prevent the chapter from being useful, and is really more of a review for folks who haven't put together a lot of webapps using any framework.

Good book, please don't expect all the answers
By Tracklead
This book is a good start for a great toolkit.

Some people read books cover to cover - not me. So I like book such as this where I can go read a section when I want to.

My humble advice - Please practice using Maven. Some of the Maven concepts and lingo are non-intuitive and will begin to make sense only when you build projects and artifacts yourself - adding complexity gradually. And please don't bite too much. Best to get one's head around the basics first and then tackle the trickier elements such as filtering, profile etc.

Another suggestion - Make a list of few topics you really want to learn each week and then focus your work around those topics instead of trying to absorb it all. For example, focus on lifecycle and phases one week and work with a very simple artifact with minimum frills.

NOT THE RIGHT COVER
By Allen Smalling
I just reviewed this volume -- READER'S DIGEST CONDENSED BOOKS VOL. 1: 1957 but it doesn't have cardinals on the cover. The version I reviewed is pictured with a dust jacket, and also with its boards, which are a bull's eye/chevron type graphic. (However, the books listed in the product info are correct.)

Go here: Reader's Digest Condensed Books - Winter 1957 (Vol 1)
by Richard Powell, John O'Hara, John P. Marquand Marrijane & Joseph Hayes; Nicholas Monsarrat
Edition: Hardcover

Short version: I was not impressed. I thought most of the entries were the less-than-best although from good authors, and the abridgements ("condensations") generally didn't help.

If you're "kicking tires" with some of these old READER'S DIGEST CONDENSED BOOKS from the Fifties and Sixties, I think you'll find far better volumes. Here are some that I have already found and liked very much, along with a partial list of the books in them:

Vol. 2, 1954 (THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER, GOD AND MY COUNTRY [Disney's FOLLOW ME, BOYS], NOT AS A STRANGER)

Vol. 2, 1955 (THE DAY LINCOLN WAS SHOT, THE YEAR THE YANKEES LOST THE PENNANT)

Vol. 2, 1957 (THE LAST ANGRY MAN, THE MUSES ARE HEARD)

Vol. 3, 1961 (THE WINTER OF OUR DISCONTENT, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY, THE MAKING OF THE PRESIDENT: 1960)

Vol. 3, 1965 (INTERN, parts of Michener's THE SOURCE, and NIGHT OF CAMP DAVID by Fletcher Knebel)

I have reviewed all the above CONDENSED BOOKS volumes here at Amazon, and hopefully more will follow! - Al Smalling, Chicago

Rising Star: The Making of Barack Obama, by David Garrow

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Rising Star is the definitive account of Barack Obama's formative years that made him the man who became the forty-fourth president of the United States—from the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Bearing the Cross

Barack Obama's speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention instantly catapulted him into the national spotlight and led to his election four years later as America's first African-American president. In this penetrating biography, David J. Garrow delivers an epic work about the life of Barack Obama, creating a rich tapestry of a life little understood, until now.

Rising Star: The Making of Barack Obama captivatingly describes Barack Obama's tumultuous upbringing as a young black man attending an almost-all-white, elite private school in Honolulu while being raised almost exclusively by his white grandparents. After recounting Obama's college years in California and New York, Garrow charts Obama's time as a Chicago community organizer, working in some of the city's roughest neighborhoods; his years at the top of his Harvard Law School class; and his return to Chicago, where Obama honed his skills as a hard-knuckled politician, first in the state legislature and then as a candidate for the United States Senate.

Detailing a scintillating, behind-the-scenes account of Obama's 2004 speech, a moment that labeled him the Democratic Party's "rising star," Garrow also chronicles Obama's four years in the Senate, weighing his stands on various issues against positions he had taken years earlier, and recounts his thrilling run for the White House in 2008.

In Rising Star, David J. Garrow has created a vivid portrait that reveals not only the people and forces that shaped the future president but also the ways in which he used those influences to serve his larger aspirations. This is a gripping read about a young man born into uncommon family circumstances, whose faith in his own talents came face-to-face with fantastic ambitions and a desire to do good in the world. Most important, Rising Star is an extraordinary work of biography—tremendous in its research and storytelling, and brilliant in its analysis of the all-too-human struggles of one of the most fascinating politicians of our time.

Barack Obama: pre-Presidential life
By William Garrison Jr.
"Rising Son: The Making of Barack Obama" by David Garrow, (May 2017).

WOW! The first thing that impresses a reader is that this 1,461-paage tome feels like it weighs like a 10-lb. sack of flour (okay, really only 7.2 lbs.).  About 78% of the book is analysis (1,078 pages), with the balance being: notes, bibliography, and index.

The author deeply delves into studying the upbringing of U.S. Pres. Barack Hussein Obama from his childhood years up to his announcement that he would run for the office of the U.S. President in mid-January 2007.  The author doesn't really analyze the 2008 presidential campaign itself in detail, but notes several crises that could have severely hurt (and possibly derail) Obama's campaign. In the Epilogue, the author does briefly review both presidential campaigns, and notes some highlighted events in Obama's presidency (hey, only about 35 pages of reviewing his eight years in the Oval Office).

Being a libertarian, I was surprised to read: "Barack claimed to Time [magazine] that as an undergraduate, 'I was reading Milton Friedman and Friedrich Hayek,' famous conservative economists,", but doesn't relate how those two influenced him outside of apparently stimulating his survival spirit: "... Barack told the Tribune [newspaper] that 'I had to scratch and claw my way to the point I am now....'" (p. 1049).

The author reviews how the controversial remarks of Rev. Jeremiah Wright impacted Obama's campaign, as well as questionable sexcapade controversies during his college years.  The author's legal credentials will have to serve as how one views the "truthiness" of the author's contentions and discoveries.   I wasn't involved in Obama's campaigns, and like most will need to await the feedback of Obama's staff in (partially) validating some aspects of the author's portrait of our 44th president.

Hey, there's almost 1,100 pages of critical analysis, so there is indeed extensive commentary on Barack's teenage and collegiate life.

Undoubtedly, anti-Obama conservatives will be pleased with the many revelations in this book, but they undoubtedly will bemoan "if only this stuff had been revealed earlier!"  Obama fans will pan some of the author's contentions, but most of us will be impressed with the extensive research that the author has undertaken in exposing so much of the unknown Barack (at least to those of us who didn't follow his Chicago, liberal community-organization activities, state senate votes, and his brief U.S. Senate career -- topics which the author discusses in great detail). [Brent Staples has a fine review in The New York Times.]

Unicorns don't live at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

Finally a book on truth and not written as a fluff piece towards a stepping stone for a presidential bid. Politics is a ugly business and power hungry people are capable of anything, or becoming anyone to reach their objective. It's time we all realize that it's not a game show... it's a business called power.

Truth!
By Eric
At last - someone tells the truth about Barack Obama. I was wondering how long it would take. Ah well, the damage is already done, but at least this can help us prevent him - or someone like him - from ever holding power again. Well written and includes all kinds of facts that were covered up by the corrupt media the past 10 years.
