I don't hate it, but I wouldn't have bought it if I'd checked first...

I have been using the first edition of this book for a while, and decided to upgrade to the third edition. To me, the primary benefit of the first edition was that the example html files could be immediately and conveniently tested in the various browsers that I work in. I was *very* surprised that in this third edition, what was provided at the website was a zip file containing simple .txt files of the snippets from the book. Perhaps my expectations were too high based upon the good work done in the first edition, but I will certainly be checking the example support in before I purchase in the future, because if I had known these were the kinds of examples provided, I wouldn't have purchased the updated version.

Great for beginner

I purchased this book, to use with for a college web design course. So far I have read through the first two chapters of the book (103 pages). The book is a little dated, and for some reason some of the example HTML codes are in a foreign language, along with some of the sample web pages. I don't know if I received a wrong version of it, or what. Despite some of the examples being in a foreign language, the book teaches you how to code CSS and HTML very well. I have no prior experiece with web design, and I am finding this book easy to read and understand.

Excellent for bringing HTML Old Timers up to speed with CSS

I have been designing and building HTML pages since mid-1994 and I am amazed at how much coding has changed in the past 15 years.

Back then building websites was pretty straight forward, you used tables to create columns and filled them up with text and graphics. Web designs were very basic, fixed width was the norm and there was not much of a difference between the two most popular browsers of the era, Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer 3.0.

Starting in the early 2000s, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) dramatically changed web design and page coding. CSS enabled designers and coders to build more attractive and interesting websites. However, coding pages and then making them work in various browsers - like IE 6, IE 7, IE 8, Mozilla 2.5, Mozilla 3.0 and Chrome - became far more challenging than just laying out tables. Making the learning curve even steeper was the popularity of JavaScript and more recently AJAX, which is the combination of CSS and JavaScript.

Many "old-time" coders tried to stick with table-based layouts, but it was easy to see that basic HTML would not longer cut it and CSS was the way to go. I stopped using tables and educated myself on how to use CSS.

In the early 2000s, I purchased several CSS books, including the first edition of CSS Cookbook. That book turned out to be the most useful because O'Reilly's "Cookbook " format is based on question and answer rather than the other CSS books, which focused on basic tutorials.

With the CSS Cookbook, I was able to look up "How to build a two column page," which would provide me with sample code as opposed to going through a basic CSS tutorial. I was able to learn quickly.

I was happy to discover that the third edition of CSS Cookbook has come up and it has been completely updated with how to create rounded corners with JavaScript and using Lightbox to display images as well as a chapter on how to use JQuery. It will also provide you with the basic CSS instructions on how to make one, two and three column layouts and how to set up floats.

If you are new to CSS, you should consider buying another CSS book, but if you know basic HTML and CSS and want to bring your skills up to the next level, I highly recommend reading this book.

This book helped me tremendously for several years

This book was very Helpful, for it's time. When I was first diagnosed over 10 yrs ago, this book and the supplements it suggests, helped me tremendously. Three years ago I got to the point that nothing seemed to help, including more surgeries. My gyno suggested a Nova Sure Ablation procedure, after two really rough years with my endo., I was more than ready to give it a shot. I had the surgery last July, as an out patient procedure. It took a good three months to heal completely and feel like I had made the right decision with absolute certainty. Now, almost a year later, I can say without a doubt getting the Nova Sure done was the very best decision I have ever made. I have not had any pain or bleeding in months. Also, no more periods- yay! Keep in mind, I am forty four, and done having babies. They usually tie your tubes with this procedure, since getting pregnant afterwards can be dangerous. Just wanted to share my experience in hopes that it might help someone find the relief I have found.

Great book on anything endometriosis

This book will tell you things about the human body you didn't know about. This book is purely amazing. My mom got it since we both thought that I had endometriosis since I was having so much pain in my pelvis.

In 2007 I had a small 2cm cyst on my right ovary and it had grown to 7cm by 2012. I had to have surgery to remove it. I got this book and I think it did go into cysts. This book goes into the importance of diet and I can't remember if this book touches on the dangers of too much soy in the diet (it can act like estrogen).

I found out I do not have any endometriosis, but my cyst was entangled in my right ovary and it had to be removed. I can't imagine the pain women are going through with endometriosis. I know I was doubling over for a good 2 weeks in Aug 2012, due to the tangling. But that was only for 2 weeks and then Oct 2012 I had it removed. I felt so much better after surgery. I think this book does go into surgery. It has been almost a year since I read this book but if you want to understand what your wife or girlfriend is going through, read this book. Any woman would want this book if she thinks she has endometriosis.

Endometriosis info

I am in the process of being diagnosed and was looking for detailed info on the entire process. This book has a lot of knowledge and information in it, but my issue with it is I don't appreciate a book that says for more info on this or that buy our other book. I have an appointment with a specialist in a week and had time to get through one book not 2 so I picked the newer one thinking it would be most up-to-date and shield it had a lot of helpful info I also felt it lacked more details on things and the authors knew it did because they said for details read our other book- frustrating for me.

You can learn the Pentax K5 with this Magic Lantern K7 guide.

I consider myself a beginner even though I've been involved with photography for over 30 yrs.
I'm one of those people you would call a natural;
able to get good and sometimes great results
without having a clue of the technical aspects of photography. A few years ago I got myself a pentax K10D then a K20. Things went pretty well. Then I bought the pentax K-5. I actually got good photos with all three cameras as Pentax don't make no junk. As the cameras got more technically advanced (from the k10 to the k5) my knowledge of photography stayed pretty stagnant. Out of frustration I was determined to study and learn about photography so I could once and for all take my camera off the auto mode setting (green mode) and finally become a real photographer. Enter the Magic Lantern K7 Magic guide. Through research I discovered the K5 and the K7 are identical except for a few very minor differences.
Operationally they are virtually the same camera. In just 2 to 3 says from studying the Magic Lantern K7 guide with camera in hand I was able to make great strides in learning and understanding how my K5 works and operate. In just a few short days I have become a much better photographer just buy understanding my Pentax K5 on a much deeper level. The Magic Lantern Guide made the difference. Some people might not like the repetitive nature of the book but it worked quite well for me. Each time around the author builds on the knowledge presented before. I recommend this book for learning the Pentax K5 mainly because there really isn't anything else out there for the K5. Pentax has made an exceptional camera in the K5 as well as the
K7. If you need this book get this book. You won't be sorry.

Maybe I'm missing something...

I don't get the raving reviews. This book is nothing special. I bought it after upgrading to the K7, expecting to find it packed with *specific* tips and suggestions about the camera... "the best ISO is..." or "it really struggles with [issue] and you can mitigate that by doing [something unusual]," maybe.

Instead, it's a verbose instruction manual that -really- reads like a cut-and-paste generated by a macro. You know, like it was pumped out by a template with mail-merge fields ready for whenever another model comes out: "The [model] by [manufacturer] has settings for shutter speed and aperture. 'Shutter speed' is...." This company must be way high up the list of "money made per effort expended" when it comes to publishing!

It's fine if you've never read anything about photography. It's fine if you need something that uses color pictures and wayyyy too many words to re-explain what the manual already contains. But I won't be buying another copy with my next camera upgrade, and mostly regret buying this one.

A must have for non professionals

When I bought my new K7, I was shocked to discover all of the features and options the camera had. Not like the old film cameras that's for sure! The owners manual briefly covered these features but left many things unexplained and offered no help for the amateur. This book filled the gaps, it explained how to use my camera in much greater detail. However, this book is not an instruction into photographic technique and does not offer any "secrets' that the pros use. For that I would recommend other books. Unfortunately when I upgraded to the K5 they had no magic lantern guide for that camera and they say they will not make one either. So, I kept this copy. The cameras are so similar that they probably don't need a different version, and considering the speed at which things change nowadays Pentax probably won't be making the K5 for much longer anyway.

it did a great job. If you're not required to buy it ...

Had to use this for a Game Design class. I had one of those classes where the teacher was thrown into teaching it, and just relied on the book to be the teacher instead. Well, it did a great job. If you're not required to buy it for a class, I still recommend it. I earned my cert and went away from Game Design, but if I need to go back to review level design or something, I'll reference this.

Descent Book but essentially its kind of padded like the rest in the series and talks about things that are off subject and not relevant in my opinion. Still a good buy and offers some descent knowledge for the low price I paid.

What is all the fuss about, really?

So, here's the deal with the Game development essentials' books... The author and her co-writers sometimes cover some of the very same topics in different books... (I've read more than one of them) Not only that, these series often try to cover everything about game production, from the very first game consoles to the concept phase of game production (today), to most things done during the pre-production stage, to production, etc...
Simply put, they talk about everything and they have good things to say about everything, but NOTHING GREAT about anything...
Overall, these books talk about game production in a very glamorous way, simplify everything and make it all seem simple, when in reality they're not. I'm a recent Game Production alumni myself, (which is why I'd purchased some of these books) so I know a thing or two about games ;)
So, if you want very general/basic information on the topic, this book would be good for you. If you actually (and seriously) really want to learn about Game Level Design and more, look elsewhere.

Scary, intense, believable

There's a lot to like in this novel by HH. It's far superior to Dragon Strike but not quite as good as Third World War. I really enjoyed the Asia-centric nature of the politics. I was disappointed in the ending because I believe China is a fascist totalitarian state and I don't want to see their powers expand but it was an entirely credible ending. I look forward to reading more by this author.

Nuclear War: Ho Hum

This book is a good book, but the use of nuclear weapons is treated like it just a regular fight in the park. The relationship between the Chinese and the Pakistani's and their dislike of India is an unusual story line. The Tibetan problem, according to the Chinese, is the impetus of this story, the cause of the war between China and India. I doubt very seriously that China would nuke a third world country over Tibet, but I digress. This story does bring into reality the political statesmanship between the other world powers primarily the US and Russia, who stand back and allow the war to happen. Interesting storyline.

I like to story

I don't know what the problem with the formatting is but it needs to be corrected. There are sections, mostly dialogue, that are multi-page run-on paragraphs. I'm not sure how much of that is the author's fault and how much is the software screwing it up so I don't want to place blame. Editing in general seems to be a real problem with Kindle books.

The story is good. I've read one other book by Hawksley and liked it.

About the Author
Thomas E. Patterson is Bradlee Professor of Government and the Press in the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He was previously distinguished professor of political science in the Maxwell School of Citizenship at Syracuse University. Raised in a small Minnesota town near the Iowa and South Dakota borders, he was educated at South Dakota State University and the University of Minnesota, where he received his Ph.D. in 1971. Currently running the "Vanishing Voter" study at the Kennedy School of Government, which has been widely used in the media and on college campuses, Tom is also the author of six books and dozens of articles, which focus primarily on the media and elections. His book, 'Out of Order'(1994), received national attention when President Clinton said every politician and journalist should be required to read it. An earlier book, 'The Mass Media Election'(1980), received a 'Choice' award as Outstanding Academic Book, 1980-81. Another of Patterson's books, 'The Unseeing Eye'(1976), was recently selected by the American Association for Public Opinion Research as one of the fifty most influential books of the past half century in the field of public opinion. His current research includes a study of White House communication and a study of the news media's role in Western democracies. His work has been funded by major grants from the National Science Foundation, the Markle Foundation, the Smith-Richardson Foundation, the Ford Foundation and the Pew Charitable Trusts.

Gary Halter is a Professor of Political Science at Texas A&M University in College Station. He is a native of Amarillo and Wichita Falls, Texas and his PhD is from the University of Maryland. He served as the Mayor of College Station, Texas for six years and as a council member for five years. He has worked as a consultant to many city councils in Texas and in other states on goal setting and policy making. With Harvey Tucker, is a co-author of the Texas Legislative Almanac.

The 11th Edition is necessary

The most important question I had about the book before renting it was if there had been significant changes between the 10th and 11th editions. There is a great deal of information about more recent event and how the Constitution applies to them. While I might wish that the 10th edition was still valid, a great deal of things have changed.

It is a pretty solid textbook. The writing is approachable, and manages to maintain a sense of neutrality in areas where there are harsh divisions. Patterson maintains his focus on the subject, the workings and history of the American government, without letting issues taking a soap box to preach a particular ideology. When such issues arise, noted speakers from both sides are quoted in a section separate from the main text.

Why am I not giving it 5 stars? I think it costs too much. There are plenty of books that are just as researched that manage to come in at a lower price. If the current edition (future 12th, 13th, and beyond) are able to come down below the $70 price ($140 is just egregious.), then I would happily rate the book a 5.

Dating is nothing but a sorting process. This book can be your guide.

Things you will get from this book:
-The distinct feeling that you are privy to the great secret of finding "the one" (or ones, if that floats your boat! He, She, They are out there!)
-Stories that put even the most depressing, dismal dating experiences in the positive light of living and learning.
-HOPE! Wendy is a self-described size 16 and just as beautifully imperfect as we all are, and she found love, In fact, although the book ends with "the one", there were several loving "maybes" in the 121 strong bunch. The more we surround ourselves with a positive outlook that we are worthy of love, the more likely it will come to us.
-Laughs. Oh there are laughs.
-Real talk. Yes, sex, STDs, lying, dating profile no-nos. All the dirt. And you will get a male perspective on a lot of this dirt because Wendy describes her experience as a dating coach and "man expert" throughout her own dating life. I don't want to give it all away, but she knows a lot of secret thoughts that men have.

Entertaining and very helpful!

I am one of several people who followed Wendy's blog and said "You have to write a book about this!" She combines her real life experience with online dating (and friends' setups or other meets) along with the knowledge she's learned and shared through her association with Pax about the differences between men and women's communication and styles. Wendy is hilarious but also smart and insightful, with a very readable and entertaining writing style. Anyone that is entering the dating pool, or frustrated with it will pick up some great tips along with several LOL moments along the way.

Dictionary of Finance and Investment Terms

I'm not a finance person but it seems that everywhere I turn whether watching the news or watching the markets, I get bombarded by terms and phrases I don't really understand. The Dictionary of Finance and Investment Terms helps me grasp the concepts being described by pundits and analysts. The cover says there are over 5000 terms. Other reviewers say there are more information online which is no doubt true, but for what I need it is all pretty much right here. To me, it is easier to flip through a book to a specific page than it is to do a search, review my options, then scroll through adds and fluff to find what I'm looking for.

The book says it is in its eight edition so that tells me it has been around for a long time and has been a useful resource for all of that timespan. The language is simple to understand. THere are no political spins or economic theories being presented. It is what it says it is, a dictionary of terms relating to finance and investing. The book won't make you rich or get you out of debt, but it will describe what type of wealth you have or the terms for your debt.

I purchased this book to help me understand terms and concepts and it appears that this book will serve that purpose well. If you are looking for a similar resource, then I strongly recommend this book.

A useful tool in your belt

I have worked in debt and equity finance for over 17 years and can say this is a useful tool to have in your belt. While it isn't completely comprehensive, there is a solid foundation of terms relating to real estate, stocks, law, and other major areas upon which to build. Just as no tool in my garage handles every job, this book lacks some terms that could have been included. However, for the size, cost, and utility of this little book, it provides a great desktop reference to have upon your shelf or desk to utilize at a moment's notice. Of course there's a lot of information on the web. However, since Barron's is one of the most respected names in finance, I know the information in the book is both accurate and presented from the perspective of a true professional. This is the view I take in my profession and for my life.

I would advise this book to any student or anyone who wishes to have a better understanding of the plethora or financial jargons that exist in this world.
