A Classic

If you are keenly interested in card magic there is every reason to buy this book. It's inexpensive, it's comprehensive, and a terrific resource. I can give it only four stars because I find it terribly hard to learn most of the sleights from the diagrams and descriptions. They're very hard to describe but, when this was written, there was no internet, no DVDs, no way of learning other than one on one or via the printed page. So there are far easier and clearer resources for learning the techniques in this book. Still, it's a classic volume and, particularly if accompanied by a good video reference for the various moves, well worth the money.

Incredible resource

All the Dover Magic Books I've encountered are really well set up for Kindle and this one is no different. Plus, this is such a well-written classic that even if you never put any of the routines into practice or have your own pet sleights from other teachers or personal experience, merely thinking along with the methods as you read this book will make you a better cardician.

As good as you've heard, but the epub edition has some issues

This is an excellent text, with extremely detailed instructions. I'm mostly a novice at this stuff, with a mostly academic interest, and not much yet especially dextrous with my hands, but even I found with dedicated reading, notwithstanding the tiny diagrams, the descriptions are so excellent that you _can_ get this stuff working, and working well. As you may have heard: you don't read this book casually: you read in detail, work slowly, and dedicate yourself to practising. Doing so, you can hardly help but getting somewhere, and potentially somewhere pretty impressive. These are solid techniques, from what my limited experience can tell, some demanding, some less so, and all entirely fascinating.

The reason I can't give it five stars: the epub edition I have contains a fair level of typos and wonky paragraphs I just have to assume come from the same problem; I'm guessing they're mis-scans during optical character recognition missed in subsequent correction; obviously I can't tell quite how it happened at my end. In a very few places, it's bad enough you have to add a step to that careful reading: a forensic step of working out what it _must_ have said, supplemented in my case by grepping around the web, looking for people talking elsewhere about the sleights, toward said working out.

Which is annoying. It's nice there even is an epub, obviously--I find it very convenient to read on my phone in moments of what would otherwise be downtime--but the errors do get in the way.

That said, in fairness, there's only one or two such places it's such a significant problem. Usually, it's just more a stupid optical error, one character in a word you can work out from context, and since it's pretty obvious what was meant, fine, good enough. Still, it'd be nice to see a little more caution in preparing an epub people do pay for.

She discusses the individual process played out at a site, moving into scheduling, collaboration, and mapping, and down to the specifics of the research process as students experience it. Various research models are compared and contrasted. In another helpful overview, Taylor reiterates the basics of various learning styles and the activities appropriate for them, provides a list of 15 different types of questioning strategies, adapts Bloom's taxonomy to a useful fill-in-the-blank format of questions at each level, and examines how the library site itself can enhance or limit these ideas. Finally, she describes various assessment strategies for individual lessons through major units and of the process itself, providing a concise visual display through a comparison matrix. About the Author
Born in Osaka and currently living in Tokyo, KEIGO HIGASHINO is one of the most widely known and bestselling novelists in Japan. ALEXANDER O. Unusual crime novel

This is an unusual crime novel that manages to play with our expectations of the genre. We expect certain things of our killers, detectives, geniuses – these expectations are played with here.

I don’t want to talk too much about the plot – one of the delights of this book is discovering it. I will say that Higashino just seems to “get” people – he creates characters who behave in ways that seem absolutely authentic, even when the situations are bizarre.

I’ve been reading a lot of Japanese fiction lately and I have found that translation can be a real sticking point for immersion in these novels. Some translations are so awkward. This one is elegant and unobtrusive.

A detective story in reverse

This is a cleverly and carefully constructed novel with each and every paragraph contributing to the plotline.

This novel has all the elements of a classic detective story. A murder in second chapter. There is a pair of inspector and a "consultant detective". While the detective is in the Sherlock Holmes/Hercule Poirot mould, the inspector is decidedly smarter than Lestrade. And the chemistry between them is different and much refreshing. And thankfully, there is no Captain Hastings/ Dr Watson to spend too many pages on wrong clues.

However, the story is told in reverse. We, the readers, know the culprits. And the motive. If you are attentive, you will even know what must have happened that is keeping the police from closing in on the suspects. But by that time, you are intrigued by the motives of the main characters. And closely related to the main plotline are a couple of poignant love stories dealt in a very mature way which hold our attention. Although the author hides a few things from the reader, the reader does not feel deceived. Making it a satisfying read when all the dots are finally connected.

However, the popular math bits and science information introduced into the narrative seemed a bit forced. For a math genius and a physics genius, they sure talk to each other about "P vs NP" and other things in a fairly childish fashion. Nevertheless, it does not take away too much from the novel.

Mark it for those rainy afternoons and savour it with hot coffee.

Sometimes Deep Global Vision Can Be Fun

If I could start first with a regret, it is that I read the books of Ruchir Sharma in the wrong order.

I first discovered "The Rise and Fall of Nations" which was published a few years later, and enjoyed it enough to see what else Ruchir had written. Global economics is one of my particular topics of interest, and there is no better source than the Chief Global Strategist at Morgan Stanley.

He writes with a very crisp, colorful style, though I felt it was more developed in his later work. Breakout Nations is most of what I had expected in a precursor to that book.

If there is anything that the modern reader-- five-years-plus after publication-- should be impressed by, it's the conclusions drawn in this book. It was written before commodity prices collapsed, before Brazil's economic crisis, before the inevitable stuttering of Russia, but this book anticipated it all. Sharma clearly knows what to look for in potential breakout nations.

interesting book

An interesting book by Indian born economist Ruchir Sharma, the head of emerging markets at Morgan Stanley on which emerging countries he believes will be able to break out on the new few years.

Sharma is bearish on Thailand (too much political instability – this was written before the recent coup), Malaysia (the government is increasingly hostile to market mechanisms), Taiwan (the economy is centered on the export of a few products, like computer components, in which companies don’t have a lot of market power), Mexico (the economy is in the hand of just a few businessmen, more interested in gaining rents than in generating genuine growth), Brazil (there is still a lot of macroeconomic instability and the country has not invested in the infrastructure needed for future growth), Russia (based on natural resources and dominated by oligarchs) and South Africa (the economy is too regulated, and too much of its wealth is concentrated in too few white hands). In the emerging markets of Eastern Europe, he likes the future prospects of Poland and the Czech Republic over that of Hungary. He thinks China has already consumed all the low hanging fruit and will be growing at more normal rates in the future. Regarding Vietnam, while admitting the recent years have seen large economic growth, he doubts the country will be able to turn into a second China (its education system is poor and its politicians are less able than the Chinese). India needs to tackle crony capitalism if it wants to pursue a sustained path of high economic growth.

He is optimistic about South Korea (almost the only country, except some oil producers, that have graduated from a poor to a rich economy in the recent decades), Turkey (he praises president Erdogan for leaving behind the long conflict between the secular military and the Islamic masses), Philippines (he believes the new government will be able to put forward reform), Indonesia (among the best run nations of Southeast Asia) and Sri Lanka (now that the long civil war is finally over, he believes the economy will be able to grow).

Sharma believes that as the decade-long commodities boom winds down, the big winner will be the Western world, who will have to pay less for the commodities it buys and especially the United States, who remains at the frontier of new technological products. If you read regularly the world economic news, you won’t be reading here something terribly new, but it is an interesting read nonetheless.

Provides an interesting view

I enjoyed this book and the view it presents. It is a a very nice walk through of a large number of countries. The data in it might be a little dated as the main book is from 2010, but it ends with an update. I think more importantly than the current data is the thought process that he applies. He tries to show how to use it consistently across countries to understand the macro setting and how it impacts the chance of a country wide breakthrough.

Two caveats on my rating. First, much of the analysis and framework in the book is presented as being "fact". I would do the same in writing a book (people are, after all, looking for your view). But as a reader I think it is important to keep in mind this is the process followed by one very experienced individual. A careful read shows that even he is saying things can change immediately and many other things will matter. But in much of the book it would be easy to drift into thinking he is providing "the answer".

Second, I felt the book was a little unstructured at times. It would have helped to have more of the structure laid out in the front of the book so that as I read I had some idea where we are headed. I think there is a very nice structure there in many parts of the book - he starts with a few well known countries and then uses them as benchmarks as we explore much more of the world - but it is only after reading it that I see the structure. It reads a little like a bunch of individual analyses that he then put together (and given his acknowledgements thank an editor for a magazine he publishes in, that may be the basis).

Neither of these detract so much that I dropped a star. Rather, I think they would be helpful for readers to know so they can get the most out of what is a very interesting book.

Insightful, could be better organized

I'd heard vaguely of Paula over the years in women's magazines but had never read any of her books. I had the general impression that she was a crusader for truth in beauty advertising. This February I asked an acquaintance of mine what cleanser she used with her Clarisonic face brush because her skin looked great. She told me she used Paula's products. I didn't know Paula had a line of products or books at all! My acquaintance urged me to read this book, saying it had completely changed her beauty outlook.

I purchased the Kindle edition for my Mac, which was easy and pleasant to read on the screen. However I will echo others' calls for an index.

Paula's tone is chatty, but also no-nonsense, like a stern aunt. She relies mostly on peer-reviewed research whenever possible, and tries to explain such research in simple English. Maybe sometimes she simplifies things too much, but overall it's a pretty good approach geared to everywoman. She will recommend other companies' products besides her own, but of course she does mention her own frequently.

Altho' I thought myself a canny beauty consumer, Paula did surprise me a few times, and I confess I learned some important things. For many years I had used witch hazel as a toner to stop my sensitive skin from itching. She explained that witch hazel is actually also an irritant, but stops itching by causing a slight distractive itching that fools the nerves. She argued that the witch hazel was only continuing the irritation in the long run.

It was hard to give up my witch hazel, but I confess that after 3 weeks, much of redness did go away for the first time in many years. Also, I love the scent of lavender, but Paula pointed me to peer-reviewed research showing that in the test tube, lavender oil had actually been proven to kill skin cells, thus harming the natural skin barrier and causing senstivity. I was shocked, but did use the internet to find the study and was convinced.

Now I've stopped using lavender products, and again, I have to confess that after 6 weeks without any lavender products, my skin does seem less sensitive. I do wish however she spent more time on rosacea and couperose, though.

Not that I would say Paula's perfect. Her makeup advice and approach seems stuck in the early 1990s "matte & nude" period. Also her section on lasers, cosmetic fillers and Botox could be more in-depth and up-to-date. She doesn't go into enough detail on these, and doesn't mention all the downsides. She is honest and admits that she had some small complications with her own filler experience, however.

Also, she doesn't always take allergans and hormone-disrupters seriously enough. In many of her evaluations, she will say that a certain ingredient is regulated and certain products meet government standards. But of course there are legitimate questions as to whether the government standards are strict enough in light of recent science and if even these minimal regulations are adequately enforced. So sometimes I wish she were more skeptical on these points.

However I will say I was impressed enough with this book to sample Paula's products and to stop using lavender, witch hazel, and any alcohol. Her advice has really improved my skin, and her products are better than the "fancy" products than I was using - I must confess. Her advice is good for people with sensitive skin and I have to admit her products have helped mine at a cost much less than I used to pay.

Good but not great.

The information presented seems very complete. However, how anyone can write a guide such as this and leave out an index is beyond me. Finding the information for which I am looking is hit or miss since the index is nonexistent. I shouldn't have to go page by page through this large book to find the specific facts and products I need.

Comprehensive but out of date and a bit biased

Huge amount of information, but not well organized and repetitive. I would have preferred a book half the length with a better structure. There is a lot of duplication, maybe this comes from the chatty style, or maybe it was dictated into a recorder and transcribed.

What I found most frustrating was the assumption that if an ingredient or product didn't have a specific scientific study devoted to it, that this meant it didn't work. And yet chapters and chapters were devoted to products that in the author's personal experience worked without any scientific basis. Just seemed incongruent to me.

The book is heavily biased to the author's particular skin problems - adult acne. So if this is your problem, then you are in luck.

As for the idea that skin does not have particular problems from age, and that all can be classified into dry, normal, oily or combination, I find this totally bizarre. And totally untrue as anyone past menopause could agree I am sure.

The author also had a problem with dermatologists and pooh poohed their expertise and ability, and then derided products for not being tested or approved by dermatologists ??
